You can add me to the list…

Been shooting in NYC since Thursday – everything AOK. The glitch happened Saturday morning.

M11/Latest firmware/50 APO. Shooting viewfinder only. Basically all ‘default’ settings, battery 85%, SD storage only (ProGrade UHS-II 256GB), about 20% of the card used. Only LCD use was the 3second post-exposure preview. And one or two exposure compensation shots using LCD to adjust compensation levels. Basically, just walking around and shooting – nothing fancy…

Was shooting steadily for a about 10 minutes… Paused for a minute or so, camera entered ‘standby’ mode, then would not wake-up. All buttons frozen. As if the camera was dead… After cycling power, all AOK – as if nothing happened…

After reboot, camera worked fine for rest of day… No problems what so ever.

Some combination of settings must be causing the firmware to glitch…

Happens to me a couple of times per week. Turning it off and on won't initiate startup, even if waiting several minutes in between off/on. Only solution is taking out the battery. I really hope it will get solved by a firmware update. But somehow I doubt this would be fixed so "easily".

No problem here . Still using UHS-I cards. No idea if it is related but 170mb/s is fast enough for me. My old 95mb/s work fine too. JFI.

Not using any card at all, just the internal storage and it still freeze. Also same story with an old Sandisk Extreme 32gb UHS-1 card (45mb/s). So I don't think its just about the card, I think there's some code that cause a memory dump/os error when going back from standby as well.

I'm no techie at all just stating my modest facts in case they may inspire others pending the next firmware update

Haven’t digested this thread, but from the two or three cases that I read, a common scenario seems to be entering/exiting standby and/or writing data to storage. Note: I suspect entering standby flushes buffered data, so maybe the root cause is the same. The end-result is similar: a non-responsive camera. In my case, cycling the power switch fixed it, but others needed to remove the battery.

The only other piece of data that I can add to my use scenario was that I was shooting Aperture preferred, Auto shutter speed (max of 1/4f), and Auto ISO limited to around 12K.

Bet this is one of those boundary cases that is going to be hard for the firmware guys to nail down (been there, done that). The more use case data documented, the faster they’ll be able to find the root cause and patch the firmware.

Had the camera freeze on me 3 times today, had to do hard reset with battery for it to let go each time...

Have you disabled standby mode? Sometimes it freezes when waking up

Add me to the list also!! Shooting with 50mm summicron and 2.8 90 Elmarit (old but useful!!). Shooting with LCD. All freezes. No control works except off/on switch. When off’s then on’d, works for a frame of two then freezes up again.

Have both been coded? The latest firmware seem to improve the issues with uncoded lenses

Spent an hour wandering around the local countryside yesterday with my 1955 5cm Summicron Collapsible (& Visoflex2) attached to my M11.  Took  over fifty frames without any hint of a lockup.

PS - Visoflex was only on the camera because I'd previously been using my 21mm SEM and had left it in situ after changing lens.

  • 2 weeks later...

Firmware issues are often difficult to 100% correct at product release. Most products get tested internally, then through a limited closed-beta user release cycle. This usually catches 95% of the issues…Upon general release, new (and often unanticipated) use conditions arise that uncover more bugs in the code. These get patched over time… In most cases, a series of firmware updates over the first year catch all but a small-fraction of issues. In some cases, there are hardware issues uncovered that may or may not be worked-around with firmware, but that is another topic…

I’ve shot around a thousand images through my M11 and only had it freeze once (as documented above). I strongly suspect (well, hope really) that the issue will be corrected with a firmware update. It may just be a boundary-case that the developers didn’t anticipate or a hardware defect that they can work-around in firmware. IF it’s a true hardware defect that can’t be patched, then that’s another issue entirely… Let’s all hope not…

It’s a rare condition and not a show-stopper, but I did miss a good shot – so annoying…

Note: I still use stand-by, but increased it to 10 minutes... All other settings remain as detailed in my last post...

I do not understand the M11.  Many users seem to have no problems, while a handful of users are plagued with problems.

The more I read, the better the M10R sounds.  That's a sad commentary on Leica's flagship camera. 😢

I decided to part with m11, its a great camera practically but i just felt too bugging, well at least until the next iteration of P.. back with the R

When I decided to buy new the M11 was about a month away. I still chose the M10R. Better the last of a generation than the first of a new generation. (See MacBook Pro 2016).

The differences aren’t any significant to me. Just carry an extra battery in your pocket.

My 2 week old M11 froze. I turned it off but the spinning wheel on the screen continued for an hr until I removed the battery. Next day It worked fine again but I had contacted my supplier and a new M11 is being sourced for me. Reading this thread, it seems many Leica digital M owners aren't fazed by the freezing. I'm not sure what to do, if it's a pretty rare problem then that's OK but it might happen frequently and also theres obvs something amiss which can't surely be helped by interupting the circuits by battery removal.
