I was actually going to suggest that, but figured it was not an option.  I'd love it, though.

I owned a Wetzlar M6 shortly after they were introduced. The red dot was marked "Leitz" with the "Leica M6" on the front of the top plate. I mentioned the big M6 in an earlier post. Get rid of the red dot, big M6 and the top plate with the Leica script and "Leica Camera AG Wetzlar, Germany". Keep it simple.

I hate to rain on this parade but does anyone really expect Leica to come out with a cheaper camera?  Why would you shoot yourself in the foot?  And a cheaper camera with new technology?  This is certainly not the Leica I know.  It was almost twenty years after auto exposure via aperture priority was made available in Japanese cameras before Leica got around to the M7(and if memory serves the Minolta CLE was way before the M7).

And other than thru the lens metering and aperture priority auto exposure in the M6 and M7,  the MA is really almost identical to the M3.  Throw in a behind the lens meter and you have an MP.   I mean the rangefinder in the MA/MP/M3 works the same way.  You could bring up frame lines like the digital Leicas do but I would not expect that in a new film camera for less money.  The lens mount is the same and I don't see this crowd spending the money for a built in motor for film advance/shutter cocking.  For the Leica photographer, less for more money really seems to be the goal.

And is it worth getting worked up on if the body has a red dot or other decoration?

After a parade of digital M bodies starting with the M8, Leica has placated film users with the MP. The M7 had a good run with the fading hope the new Leica would be an improved version but that seems unlikely to happen. The M-A was rolled out as a back to basics homage to the M2, even tossing in a roll of Tri-X. Many of us were, maybe still are, hoping for something innovative that really shows Leica is the leader in film photography. A warmed over M6 may excite collectors and a few users but many of us truly believe film is not dead and ironically, it may be film that saves the camera manufacturers from the phones.

One of my trusted sources told me the new Leica M6 is intended to placate all those who really want to buy a new MP but can't find one anywhere.  Clever move by Leica.  It should sell well unless the Portuguese completely f@(k it up.

Is there any real confirmation that something new is actually coming soon?  I haven't seen it...

Yes, a Leica shop I spoke to said a film camera is coming but they couldn’t talk about it because they are under embargo.

But that doesn't make any sense.  Just build more MPs, than introducing a “new” camera that is for all intents and purposes an MP.

That makes zero sense.

“We’re out of pepperoni pizza!  What should we do?  Make more?”

”No, let’s make cheese pizza. And serve the pepperoni on the side”

Who do you think is even distantly in contention with Leica for the title of "leader in film photography" in any case?

Lomo? Kodak/Ilford pre-loads? Fuji Instax? The handful of remaining 2kg view-camera manufacturers?

That is not Leica snobbism. It just reflects the fact that nobody else is making serious roll-film cameras at all.

Leica is the leader because everyone else quit. Who else could be the leader? Nikon? Canon? Even Cosina quit.
