Hi all

I just pulled the trigger on a used M10-P for a good price online, and then checked some of the pics. The top Leica engraving seems to be blacked out for some reason. How did the previous owner do this, is it reversible and should I be concerned about it?

Best,

Geo

Congrats on the purchase, the scripts were filled and along the way some users decide to start peeling it off with tooth sticks for instance

you dont have to worry

Better you buy another original M10-P just to demonstrate the seller that such ridiculous manipulations are not rewarded by the second hand market.

You can fix it as mentioned earlier.  There have been other posts here where the white script was damaged by cleaning with a solvent like alcohol.  I see that the ISO numbers are also diminished.  Looks like someone made a poor choice on cleaning and decided to sell, hopefully you got a good deal because of it.  But don't worry, it won't hurt anything and is reversible  but you'll have to research a bit to find the proper lacquer stick to repair it with.  Maybe someone that has experience will respond.

I would guess that this has been done intentionally, and is not uncommon.

If it bothers you you could research the appropriate lacquer to use (the one Leica use is able to be removed with solvent, as had been done here).  If it was me I'd try to find someone to do it who knows what they are doing, wouldn't have to be a camera restorer it could be anyone with a steady hand and who is used to working with fine line work.  (engravers / painters ? )... should be easy to find someone to do it well at a small cost IMO

But in short it's nothing to worry about at all and some users prefer this look

Awesome thanks for the quick replies guys! Great news that its reversible! I was thinking more about resale value than personal taste, I actually kind of like it to be more incognito since the camera has this vibe.

So consensus is that you can fix with lacquer stick, but find an engraver. Do you think it is also worthwhile to let a leica store look at it or do they overcharge for this stuff?

And yes I got a great deal, 4900$ for the camera, extra battery, EVF and the voigtlander 50mm 1.4 lens, which is the best price I’ve seen here in Switzerland (Normally the body alone is sold for ~5k).

No worries at all. Sorry just to clarify the only reason I mentored “engraver” was because I was thinking about skilled people with steady hands. I’m sure you know this but no engraving will be required 😊

Yes it is reversible and can be filled with a lacquer stick. Or you can leave it as it has no effect on the photographs. It’s a camera. It’s not jewelry.

Personally, I like to wear it on my wrist where it nicely sets off my Patek Philippe and crocodile leather loafers as I settle into my Ferrari and head off to my chalet on the Riviera. Jeeves, my butler, says it does not match my custom made Brioni suit but my mistress, whom I keep in my mansion in the Hamptons says cashmere goes with everything and then, boom, just like that, the alarm goes off and I awake and stare at the instamatic by my bedside.

No blue elephant hide $40k camera bag??  My God, man!  How do you survive?  😄
