Interesting indeed.  Having never used a visoflex I never really thought too much about it, but I had always assumed that you'd put your eye directly against the viewfinder.  From these pics, it looks like there is a standoff distance involved?  If so, is the configuration really that much different than viewing the rear screen?

No you press your eyes directly to the viewfinder of the EVF.  You cannot use it otherwise.

Being used to OVF for nearly half a century (both reflex and rangefinders) a never learned to use the rear screen of a camera to compose pictures.  To much distracting to me.  Now with aging eyesight the Visoflex is still natural for me.  Besides that it widens the scope of lenses that you can use it.

Which EVF is what?

I would say, the use is very different from using the rear screen, the LCD. Not of course, if one uses a Hoodman loupe on the rear screen.

All detachable EVFs i've been using are nothing but an electronic viewfinder. It's like an optical VF we used to attach in the hot shoe of our Ms since the last century, except that it is electronic. I'm pretty sure you know it already so i must be missing something...

Does the performance improvement warrant the upgrade?  I’m not unhappy with the 020, though it’s butt ugly on the camera!

Maybe @stef63 can weigh in since he has both side by side. For me it wasn't a huge difference, but a noticeable improvement. Id also be curious to the exact dimensions of both. I sold my 020.

I posted a brief review here:

The new one seems to be just enough shorter to fit mounted in a bag.

That is indeed one of the drawbacks I’m dealing with.  The old 020 just was sliding in on the hot shoe and before putting the camera back in a bag I always removed the Visoflex.

However since the new Visoflex 2 sits more close to the body and overlaps the hot shoe (it even has some padding to avoid scratches to the top plate) I’m more hesitant to frequently mount and unmount the Visoflex.  Good thing is the much shorter fit but for example a M11 + Noctilux or 75 lux or 90 thambar + Visoflex does not fit in most bags.  You need a bag with a width of at least 11cm.

I definitely prefer the new design which makes the Visoflex more “part of” the M body.  But if it seems ugly, is personal taste.  I admit it still seems an afterthought on a beautiful camera like the M11 is.  But for some lenses and some circumstances it is pretty useful.

Compared to the 020, the Visolflex 2  engages to the flash shoe much more firmly, it solidly clicks into place. The 020 can easily back off and disconnect the contact points. Also, the angle setting didn't have much friction. The Visoflex 2 connects much more firmly, it hasn't disconnected accidentally so far and I like the 45 degree and 90 degree detents that are quite firm.

Also, and IMO,  it looks better in person than in photographs. That said, with aging eyes and having some lenses longer than 75mm and some wider than 35mm, the Visoflex 2 extends my 50 year love affair with Leica M's. (With my diopter correction screwed into the optical finder, I can no longer see the entire 28mm frame without moving my eye around, so the video finder is a necessity.)

How well does it work compared to the round visoflex?

I mean, we have many posts (above) regarding it's looks?

I am thinking about getting this new one for my M10-P.

I have never used one.

Thanks...

For me the biggest problem of the original visoflex of M10P is the unstable sensitivity of the sensor, maybe it's effected by my glasses, the EVF does not always work. So I prefer it has a button to switch back LCD or the EVF.

When I tried the new EVF on the M11, I found it much more comfortable. No sensor problem, wider view area, higher resolution inside. And the M11 brings a much quicker reaction when you press the shutter,  then you can take the next photo without obvious lag.  Just can regard the M11 with the EVF as a mirrorless camera.
