It suddenly occurs to me after reading through this thread why I feel so at home here at LUF. The sibling rivalries and infighting are exactly like the arguments and bravado I used to experience around the dinner table growing up. I can't say that every exchange then or now has been pleasant, but I'll admit there is a warm, comforting familiarity about it. No fist fights though... yet. In the words of a local Boston celeb, "Carry the hell on" 😃

I don't mind M240 series, last ones before LCAG has dropped the quality control and overall reliability.

But my M-E works so far since 2016 and batteries are 20 USD.

M240 is 200+ USD per battery, I'll skip for now to be hosed.

Ko. The M240 is a great camera for the price they are going for probably the Best Buy in the M lineup. Specially the Mp version. You should try one and you will never need more then 2 batteries

Still loving my M-P typ 240.

Besides all it's positives, great for any photography similar to any camera can do...since live view and the viso.  Love mine with various makers zoom, and other lenses...and Leica lenses too, of course.

A wonderful camera...

At some point, I'm going to pick up a 240 again. We'll see how well the M11 does, but of all the Ms I've owned so far the 240 was the best at handling the early glass. Outside of the reds, the only issue I had with the camera was the excessive blackout times.  Truly an underrated camera.

I have both, p versions, and love em both. I replaced the sensor on the M9 and it's fine now, though I use it less often and more specifically for BW because of its tonal range.

I didn't trust the color rendering of the 240 when I first got it, but I grew to appreciate it. I have dropped it from waist height 2x and it works perfectly, incredible.

We should also be talking about the threat that phones will pose to the M11. If we can still celebrate the 9 and the 240 after 13/10 years respectively, is there any chance that the M11 will be competitive with mobile in 10 years? I think some clean/sheet of paper design efforts can do it, but it is a hard pivot to make.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again in the new M11 sub forum!:)

If you like the vivid M11 colors, you’ll love the M9’s.

There’s no live view so you won’t ever have to agonize about it.  Also savings on an unwieldy EVF.  Plus no need to torture yourself thinking whether to attach the EVF or not, or is it time to detach it yet only to see a good use for it immediately after you put it away.

M9 is light!  If you like the black M11, you’ll feel right with an M9.

M9 has ecologically friendly solar frame lines!  No trees are used to produce electricity that power your frame lines in the M9.

M9 is beautifully simple.  There’s no function buttons that can fail intermittently, because there are none.

M9 uses classic Leica metering that is done with a special sensor missing on the M11.  It allows the shutter to stay closed at all times except the G-d-given moment of exposure.  This way the sensor is protected from dust.

M9 is made of solid German brass.  It keeps the rangefinder housing solidly in alignment despite all the elements can throw at you.  No need to learn material science after agonizing over aluminum vs brass for thermal expansion, vibration resistance, shockproof qualities etc.  We chose brass for you and you just enjoy it.

M9 sports a unique shutter sound that reminds you of the film camera, as if it is rewinding after each shot.  Those born without film camera won’t even understand what’s going on, and it will be a conversation starter.  Nobody will want to steal what they’ll see as an antique camera.  You’ll have to wear an Italian hat to ensure they see it that way.

A mint M9 is much harder to get than a mint M11.  If it lasted a decade it will last many more.

M9 was released on 9/9/9.  M11 was released on 1/13/22.  Consult your Chinese calendar user manual to see which date is more auspicious.

M9 comes in a wonderful chest of drawers box.  M11 comes in a shoebox.

M9 batteries are small and last long.  They are covered by a beautiful baseplate.  You don’t even need to remove the battery to replace an SD card!

There is no faux ISO knob that can fail and get stuck at a random ISO.  The ISO is set via an innovative all at a glance menu!

You can always access camera data via menus. You can see how many shutter actuations there were.  No seller can fool you by wiping the camera and calling it mint.  A modern sensor was put into most M9s as an upgrade by Leica and you can easily check whether they have it.  M9 is the only Leica camera with an upgraded sensor ever made.  It’s so simple it could be upgraded!  M11 will never be upgradeable.

There is no holes in the bottom of the camera.  It is protected by the legendary Leica baseplate.

M9 files are perfect size for you.  You may drop the pretense of becoming another Ansel Adams printing murals.  Your images are meant to be enjoyed on screens and nobody will know they are not made on an M11.  An SD card will last you forever.

But for that real Ansel Adams inside you, you can expose properly using your mind and vision, not AI.  Ansel Adams achieved zone metering with long exposures and using his hands as a mask, eg to underexpose the moon.  You will achieve it by thinking after center off shutter metering will help you most of the way.  A small LCD is not meant to do the work for you except for egregious mistakes, eg forgetting yo focus or take the cap off the lens.  You’ll become a real photographer, not a point and click one like those M11 or M22 people.

M9 has beautiful color menus and many menu buttons.  The menu system is dramatically simplified compared to M11.  You can adjust exposure very intuitively.

The annoying touch screen has been replaced with a reliable Gorilla-glass screen and all controls were moved to buttons.  You can now operate M9 in winter condition with gloves!  If you carry a Punkt smart dumb phone you’ll understand the progress.

Overall, we hope you find your dream M9 soon!

Your words encourage me to put the M10 aside...for the moment and go and make pictures with the M9. I have a 50mm summilux pre asph. that I will attach on. Thanks for this. When I get a decent image taken with this combo I will post it.

I have a feeling M9 is a keeper.  Just like Edition 60 and a silver M9M, there will be no more.  We can always push the envelope with the latest M and keep upgrading one.  But the history is in the heart with an iconic M from the past — and the images are great!

I am waiting to get my M11 in silver but am still using my M9P and M9 Monochrom.  The M9M developed a spot of corrosion so Leica replaced the sensor gratis.  The M9P never did so I had to pay to get the sensor replaced but did so just as they announced that there were no more sensors. I do love the colors from the M9P and it spoiled me from appreciating the Nikon D800 and the Olympus OMD EM5 II both of which I sold quickly.  As such, I am never selling the first generation full frame rangefinders.

Biggest mistake I ever made was taking the trade option with Leica and swapping the M9 plus cash for a SL

That’s how I felt after trading in my corroded anthracite M9.  The camera had proved itself a workhorse in travels throughout Greece, inter alia digitising 6,000 WWII aerial photographs from a BOOWU stand using a rigid Summicron, and the files still blow me away.  I part-traded up to an M240, which I still have and use, but which has never felt like the M9.

Some redemption came a couple of years ago, when a friend sold me his black M9-P, but I still miss my first M9.

I’m waiting for the SL to reach the poetic post stage to appreciate my M9 for SL trade.

Worse yet, I traded my M3 and M4 bodies for an SL grip and SL to S adapter.

Since 2009 my M9s have travelled all over the World with me, across Africa on safaris,  Antarctica , Iceland , India  some of my best images were taken with the M9.

Another M9 camera is not wanted, we all have short memories as it has a reddish tint and general inferiority to an M8, garish/ awful colours, unsalvageable raws, problems with IR sensitivity, shutter noise, embarrassing EVF, cracked sensors, red edge problems (reds are a mess), buffer/card issues, corrosion problems and if M9 colours are wanted expired slide film should be sought.  It’s only when the M240 was released where Leica finally became good enough; you see, the M9 delivered a incorrect version of reality which was the reason it appealed to some.

You forgot awful battery life. 😂

This is my plan for once M-E 220 is not working anymore. One digital M is enough at one time. I had two digital M for short period of time and realized it was not really needed.

My 2013 open letter to Leica never quite reached 1,000 signatures. Please make one man’s dream come true, ha ha.

Placing CCD into M11 now will add another 3K USD in the price.

In 2022 the only progressive solution in camera making is to make it updatable with sensors and main board.

M is technically perfect for it. No need to deal with AF. RF is always the same since fifties. No digital M has IBIS or even dust reduction. No video.

No intensive menus,  basically all is needed is ISO selection and WB.

But it is so much less profitable instead of milking $$$$ every few years with new model which has no significant improvements over previous model. And making hundredths of $ with each camera series just by relabeling dirt cheap Chinese batteries.

A fleeting moment.

Thanks to your words Setuporg, I removed the M9 from the dry box and accompanied my wife to breakfast.

I enjoy the challenge of pre-focussing and trying to capture fleeting moments in time.

I do think the rangefinder Leica is a great tool because the photographer sees life happening (or about to happen) outside the frame. And looking through the rangefinder, all is in focus, not distracted by out of focus parts of the scene.
