Thank you Jono very much for your review of the M11.
It's informative.  What I read makes me think I want to upgrade.

I have Leica ME (M9 CCD) and a leica MD without screen.  I want to sell one of them think it will be Leica ME.  But I do not really know yet.  I like them both. 🙄.
However, I think I would like to try and see the M11 in hand first.
So I hope there will not be too long a wait.
Of course, it's about how many are sold the first day.  Nobody knows ? :)

Lovely article and great photos, Jono!

Keen to hear more about tethering with the FOTOS app - is remote control available yet?

If so - the port would have been better placed on the side - although I understand that may have detracted from its aesthetics.

...and this brings up the question if Leica is now MFi certified can we see cable tethering on the SL2 anytime soon with a simple firmware update?

John

Hi John

The USB port is actually in a good position practically speaking. Remote control via Fotos is available (although tethering seems more useful, remote control with manual focus is questionably useful!)

I don't think that the SL2 is going to be backwardly updated with a simple firmware update

There is always shutter lag - even with a film camera. I spent hours and hours on this, and as far as I can tell, the shutter lag on both the M10 and M11 is about 5 hundredths of a second (a third of a blink) - I don't know what it is on an M6, but probably about the same. Catching the decisive moment is about practice / anticipation / experience. I don't believe that the shutter lag on the M11 is ever going to be the cause of missing a picture (it certainly hasn't been for me)

All the best

Thank you LocalHro1953 and Jono. That's all I wanted to know. It seems like it is negligible. Thank you. Thanks also Jono for your review. I always look forward to them.

Cheers,

Sam

Busy day 😂

Happy New Year to you both - it's been too long and would be lovely to meet up again

But worthwhile, and it's nice to get so many kind and interesting comments / questions.

I do tweak the shadows in lightroom  - but only to taste and not too much

There is a problem with lenses - I've been using two uncoded lenses, a 90 elmarit M, and a summilux V1, and I'm terribly bad at remembering to change the manual lens selection . . . I don't think the lens model shows in the metadata (but I'm not certain).

I did always shoot at 60mp. But I also did a lot of testing, and I'm sure there is a small dynamic range improvement at 36mp, but like most photographers, the first thing I do in PP is to reduce the dynamic range! (increase contrast, clarity, snap), .

So there didn't seem much point in limiting my resolution for uncertain returns (and I don't have a problem with the disk space because I only take two good snaps a month!)

Thanks Jono.  Amen to meeting up... its been way too long.

Two good "snaps" a month?  I know better!  I solved the disk space issue by ordering an 8TB MBP.  Right after ordering an M11.  It's been an expensive evening :)

Hah! My 14" MTB is only 2Tb - I'm jealous, but it's the biggest step forward for Apple for ten years!

I don’t know what it is, but colors out of the M11 in Jono’s review look absolutely stunning… Can’t wait to get mine.

The secret is to shoot sunny white balance (in the daytime) and then don't mess with the colours (it's even simple!)

Hi There Kim

I have an M9, but would love to have an MD. You should certainly feel the M11 in hand, but I fear you may be dooooomed!

all the best

Forgive my late entry into the scrum ...

Working on a bunch of stuff today .... ES 335 clone that is now completely rebuilt .... plus all the household chores.

Great to see the grandchildren growing up and they look amazing ... not just your skills but I am sure due to the love and support of the you Emma and the family.

I hope the mother ship sent you a case of something in lieu of the party that must wait for a better time.

All of your photos and the review is stellar .... nothing new there ....

Your passion commitment and integrity continue to beguile and inspire us ... well done.

Best regards,

Bob

According to DPR, the startup of the film M7 is 2 seconds, and M10-R is the same. According to Sean Reid, the startup time in rangefinder mode is about 1 second (a bit faster than M10-R). That is considerably faster than a Nikon Z7.

Yep I remember when the M7 came out people were complaining about it then....Start up on my M6 was nothing... but I know that's not possible with digital... Where is the innovation? There has to be a way so your not waiting 1+ secs... Time is of the essence when your on street..

Why turn the camera off? Keep it on standby and it is immediately available. Furthermore, all good photography is based on anticipation, being ready, not on reaction. (sorry about the preaching tone)

You can't imagine how much they do care about this. . . . and you are right, start up time isn't good enough (it's about the same as the M10) HOWEVER. The battery life is so much better - if you switch the power saving mode off completely, then the camera is always ready, and the battery lasts a day - even with the EVF on. So it's a proper 'workaround'

All the best

Jono

They do?? People have been complaining about slow start up times since the M7.... 2 sec... and has only gotten worse.... Should have been fixed on the M10 wake from sleep shouldn't have to take 2+ sec... I get that's a workaround having a better battery.... but I don't think that's the proper solution... but ok
