It's the IBIS. The system still runs when *turned off* as it's needed to keep the sensor in place, anyway. The sensor doesn't have a parked system where it can sit when turned off. Without power it'd just bounce around with every tremor.

Gordon, so what are the implications of this for sensor cleaning? Does it not matter then whether IBIS is turned on or turned off?

I loaded the firmware version 5 on the card and the machine tells me that the firmware version is the same already installed. so version 2.1 and version 5 are the same thing.

Shouldn't be any. The field that holds the sensor in place is always active as long as the camera is turned on. IBIS should have no impact on sensor clean.

Why is the version 2 lens firmware more recent than the version 5?  https://en.leica-camera.com/Corposite/Service-Support/Support/Downloads?category=128329&subcategory=&type=108942&language=all

And I won’t ask what happened to versions 3 and 4 …

I assume version 5 refers to the package, not individual firmware. Some but not all lenses received an update (50mm 'lux). Package 5 contains all the latest updates to either 2.0 or 2.1 depending on the lens.

Leica's numbering certainly not making it clear but it seems that's what's happening.

Tested out the SL2 with new FW and the 1.4/50mm LUX. AF is a lot better. Very pleased with this combo.

Thanks for the info about this specific combo... it's kind of my dream lens besides my 24-90. A heavy bag for sure... but I can't stop thinking about the images I saw with this lens.

I don't use it enough because of the weight and size, but when I do it is always mind blowing, I have to go out soon with the new firmware and this lens.

I want to echo @RBB's comments. It is a mind-blowing combination. It is large and heavy as stated above, but the photos are fantastic and couldn't be easier to get with AF. The SL2 + 50 Lux was one reason I dove back into the SL system after being mostly eh on the SL Top 601.

The firmware update also includes updates for the Leica Vario-Elmarit–SL 24–90 mm f/2.8–4 ASPH. and the Leica APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90–280 mm f/2.8-4. lenses.

Just to update this post, SL2 FW3 also includes FW update for Sumilux 50/1.4 SL

I upgraded the latest firmware to my sl2 and 50 1.4 sl summilux.  Yes it now does linear focus but I found if  I turn the focus wheel quickly, the image in the viewfinder steps or jumps in a linear fashion.  That is, the image doesnt focus smoothly  but instead the focus point will jump, display, jump, display, jump display ect and you can hear the motor move the focus in each step. But this is only if you move the focus ring a large amount and quickly possibly due to the large elements that need to be moved.  If one does finer focus and turns the focus ring more slowly or smaller amount the focus is very smooth and linear without  the motor jumps.  Thanks Leica!

Has anyone been able to compare the tracking abilities to the SL2-S with this new firmware update?

last ping because i am curious what else the sl2-s has against it other slightly being better in the dark and less noise due to less mpx.
