Hi Marco - I enjoyed your photos; I use the same setup and have just received my Sigma lens. I have two questions for you please:

- why do you use such a slow shutter speed with the SL2S camera when you have access to very usable higher ISO capability, especially when hand held; and

-are you using the mechanical or electronic shutter?  It has been said that the electronic shutter is much less likely to cause blur on the CL and I was wondering if that applies to the SL2S body as well.

Thanks for your input! Larry

For Marco an old fashioned big 4/600 is probably the much better lens (as for many professionals). But for mere mortals like me (like us ?) the quality of the 150-600 is good enough (I would even say excellent) and the light weight is for me worth a lot. (And also the light price, maybe even more so). For me a zoom is more useful than a prime and helps to get more opportunities. Just as the macro capability, which is usually missing in large classic teles.

For me the paradigm shift is good news. I don’t need top(pest) quality of a prime, I will not need to sell photos. For me it is the right mixture.

I think using f 7.1 or 8 instead of 6.3 could also improve the lens a bit. Yes then I would need higher Iso, but it is worth a try.

There come to my mind the Canon lenses of 600 and 800 mm, are they f11 ? I wonder how useful this is in the field ?

Back to Marco: handheld 1/50, at 600mm, is amazing.

Hi Larry, thanks you for your compliment!

I was actually shooting with my Canon gear. When I switched to my SL2-S I totally forgot to check the settings as I was worrying the deers could run away. Auto-ISO was set to 3200 max. That's why I used such slow shutter speeds. There might be motion blur in the pictures. It's probably the reason why I am not happy with the sharpness.

I am using the electronic shutter.

I will do much more testing and keep you informed.

Marco

Caissa, you are totally right! The Sigma is a very, very good lens! My eyes are used to the sharpness of the EF600 (it's even Mk III).

My son used to have the old SIGMA 150-600 Contemporary on a Canon DSLR and it seemed to be sharper. I have to check this. I am in an early stage of testing. I will no more complain about sharpness until I have made a decent number of photos with my new lens.

I do not like the IQ of the RF 600/11 and RF 800/11. As I do most of my shots in the dawn f11 is no option for me.

I'm quite sure this lens will not compete with the Canon 600 f/4, however, it is significantly better than the DSLR version and is a definite bonus for L mount.  Few on the SL2.

I received my copy last week. As a professional wildlife-photographer I usually use a Canon R5 with Canon EF600/4. For all other work I use my beloved Leica SL2-S. I was out in the wild with the new Sigma quite a lot over the last few days but not lucky enough to capture a lot of game. Here is on of my first pictures, a red deer in Denmark.

My first impression: very well build, lightweight and compact, but not as sharp as I thought it would be.

I have to do further testing before giving a final conclusion. I will post more picture over the next few weeks.

It is essential to use electronic shutter for maximum sharpness These EVF cameras suffer from shutter shock in a frequency that  OIS cannot compensate.

SL2-S & Sigma 150-600mm & 1.4x TC  hand held  -ISO400 f9 1/640s Electronic Shutter

This lens is incredibly sharp with no perceptible loss in IQ with the 1.4x TC (please click on image for better res.)

I’m going back and forth between this and the 90-280. But I liked this shot from today, the bird was so small and far away 600mm allowed me to go right in

I'm absolutely astonished at the performance of this lens! The AF is quick and accurate, the sharpness is nothing like the 100-400mm. I think if I bought this lens first, I would not have bought the 90-280mm. The only thing is that when zooming in and out there is alittle squeak, maybe its still new.

The 100-400 is a head scratcher to be sure, so I'm really glad to hear the sharpness is good. My 150-600 is on order.....

The Robin image taken with the CL, the Great Crested Grebe SL2,  very poor light but image ok, all at 600mm.

Mike - this came out really well.  I tried the same shot with identical camera/lens/TC but I couldn't duplicate your sharpness. I used a tripod and switched off the OS; I tried auto and manual focus. Would you please detail how you set the focus, OS, exposure and post. Thanks a lot, Larry

I guess the difference in sharpness is the clarity of the sky in the Lowveld. ;)

Actually yes - I’m at sea level and maybe had some radiation fog as well- but so far I do like this lens over the 100-400 sigma
