Rock Sandpiper, American Wigeon and Black-necked Stilt (I think it's the black-necked).  I was fairly close to these birds as the king tide brought them closer to the shore path.

First time out with this lens today.  I'm impressed.  It's not a Leica, but it's hard to beat for the price.

Has anyone experienced the corner sharpness loss in portrait vs landscape orientation as described in this article?

 https://www.cameralabs.com/sigma-150-600mm-f5-6-3-dg-dn-os-review/

This isn't something I would think to look for when evaluating a lens. My copy is arriving this week and I will be checking for this.

I've used the lens extensively for wildlife & haven't noticed the corner loss of sharpness in portrait orientation. It's not something that one would normally look for in a tele lens, especially in wildlife applications. I'm more concerned with central image sharpness. FWIW I'll try some test shots & report back if I pick up anything. It could also be something related to the Sony version & not the L mount version?

Other than that the lens is excellent you wont be disappointed.

My lens arrived today and I was able to get out briefly for a few test shots before it got dark. To answer my own question, I wasn't able to see a difference in corner sharpness between landscape and portrait mode. I tried both portrait orientations and even tried landscape upside down. Looks fine to me. I also looked at centering and could only see mild decentering at 300mm vs 150 and 600. This was done on a tripod with OIS off and 1/500 sec.

I dislike lens testing, but a few more controlled evaluations over the weekend to ease my mind and then hopefully I can relax and actually start enjoying it!

Hi Rob, did you have issues with the Sigma lens?

Hi Mike, no issues whatsoever with the lens.  It was the S5 that sucked.  Same experience for me as S1R, too many controls, too fiddly in the field,  with inconsistent AF.  I sold off the latter after 4 days, the former lasted a week before I got rid of it.

Speaking of the lens, this morning I had my first outing with a new copy on the SL2-S:

Hi Rob,

Superb photos!

From what distance to subject are you taking these photos?  Handheld with image stabilization, or tripod?  Hope all is well in your neck of the woods.

(My "duck" - which is only a cover for a pump system from the lake - is about 20-30 feet away, not moving, at about 600mm).

Regards, Rob

Hi Rob, thank you!  The parakeet was shot at maybe 12-15 feet IIRC.  The very tiny tailorbird was shot from about 18-20 feet, cropped to the pixel level.  And the bulbul was taken from about 25-30 feet with only the edges cropped.  All of my images are shot hand-held, the above three using dual IS, which works really nicely with this combination.  All is well here, thanks, as I hope it is in your slice of paradise!  Regards,  Rob

We're experiencing just a bit of insanity in our country at the moment!  I'm hopeful about covid decline but still being cautious in everyday life.

I'vm getting acquainted with the Sigma 150/600 as I'm hopeful that we'll be able to go on safari/S. Africa by the fall. (Alternative is to acquire the Leica 90-280 and use with a CL).  We shall see, as corona virus has thrown a few curve balls.

Otherwise, all good here.  Glad to see your posts again. Always superb.

Regards,

Rob

Excellent shots. Exactly my experience as well with the S1R, too many buttons, superfluous functions & erratic AF. I'm so happy with what the the SL2 & SL2-S give me.
