Welcome!

Great choice.  When it arrives, get out an use it as much as you can.  It takes a bit to get your head around how cameras like this work.

It has to be a 50mm lens, a fully mechanical camera, and I have to know I can come back with the shot. Fifty because people's faces can be distorted up close with anything shorter. I ride or die fully mechanical. I need to know the lens inside out and what it will do.

Nikon FM2 with AIS 50mm f1.8. Camera is 'bullet-proof' as there is no backup, it has a light meter, and the lens is sharp with effectively no distortion. I've used it long enough to know I can get the shot in a hurry. If I was allowed a second lens it would be the AIS 28mm f2.8.

Why not Leica? I would take my DS M3 if I was happier with the lens I have, but the Summitar has too much distortion for my taste. It will take a few years more of use for me to be sure I could get the shot in a rush, but the quieter shutter and being able to hand hold at a slower shutter speed would be an advantage.

Rolleiflex 3,5F with Planar 3.5/75. Unbeatable combination of compactness and picture quality. No 24x36 comes close.

Love my Ms, but a 6x6 Rollei is hard to beat.

Sorry ;)

Yes.  The 3.5F is ideal.  I could never understand the advantage of the 2.8, so much heavier--and I don't think as sharp.  I have a meterless type 4.

Sorry to all on here, I am a total film noob and have issues finding much online about this...

I see soo many people picking a summilux lenses as their go to for film.  (I get it, if you shoot low iso film and throughout the day that 1 stop may make a difference)

I am usually a day shooter when shooting film.  I have an M6 and have tried using my summilux 35/50 on them, but find myself having to shoot during the day at f5-16 most of the time (depending on my film stock (generally gold 200 or portra 400)...

I mean why not use an elmar or summicron (cheaper and lighter) if you (for day shooting) have to stop down so much anyway?

Are most people using an ND filter during day.

Or am I missing something...

No, you're not missing anything here. For most of the time we don't need the faster, heavier and more expensive lens. I would say though, that the 1.4/35 pre that I own is really rather small and light, it's the lightest 35mm Lux out there and not much of a bother. Some of us just like to have a Lux on our camera, it gives us a lot of flexibility. Say it's a bright day, but you pop into the pub for a pint and a sandwich - lighting is now much dimmer.

Thanks for the clarification!

Yes as Mr. Prime said the wide open can be used in dimmer lighting.

The ND filter is such nonsense as when the lighting demand closing the aperture can do.

For me the lens character (or lack of like Summarit-M lenses I use) is much more important than the wide aperture.

Summilux/Noctilux are not only for using wide open (+ ND filter nonsense).

I’m considering one of those one camera, one lens, one year projects. I’d use am M2 with 50 Summarit 2.5 lens, mainly for it’s size. Also one film - HP5+.

The M2 is new to me, so I’m trying it for a month. Really enjoying it so far.

Would that be the only photographs you take in that year or would you do other photos as well with other equipment but not part of the project?

Yes, I would shoot only with that camera, lens, and film for the year.

I’ve never been able to commit to a one year/one camera/one lens project, as I would miss shooting some of my other cameras. Maybe I could pull off a “one month” to start. Baby steps.
I really do like the idea a lot, and I’m sure it would be a fantastic experience.
