Nice choice. Do you know how the Nokton 40 and 35 compare to each other, besides the 5mm difference in fov?

Hi Steven. Yes; but things are different now from when I made my selection.

The 40mm f1.4 is (I'm 99.99% sure) the same today as it was when introduced but the original 35mm f1.4 has been improved to a large extent. At the time I bought mine (2014) the then-current 35mm f1.4 had a couple of major issues (terrible barrel distortion and horrible focus-shift) and I reasoned that by the time I had dialled-out the distortion I would be cropping in to almost exactly the 40mm FoV in any case so the 35mm was out of the running immediately. Since then, however, Voigtlander have brought out a Version 2 of the 35mm f1.4. With this newer version these issues mentioned above have been "almost entirely eliminated" (their words).

When using the 40mm f1.4 there are also (very slight IMO) focus-shift 'peculiarities' which I had never once noticed in actual use but, having seen so many negative comments on the subject posted on the InterWeb, I decided to carry out some proper studio-based controlled tests. From memory when focussed at or near min-focus and stopped-down to f2.8 - f4 the lens back-focussed something like 0.8cm. Wide-open at close range it focussed accurately and was as sharp as I'd expect such a small, compact, fast lens to be and from f5.6 down D-o-F brings things back into focus so the only issue (IMX) was shooting at 0.7m - 1.25m and then only when shooting at f2.8 - f4. Shooting at f1.4 - f2.0 was fine. Beyond 1.5m everything is perfect in every respect at any aperture. It's been my #1 lens from the day I bought it.

If you wish to see some 'proper' snaps shot wide-open let me know and I'd be happy to oblige.

If I was to be in the market for a 40mm today, however, I'd probably go for the new Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f1.2 ASPH. I've seen some members here posting some gorgeous snaps from their examples. It's nearly double the weight, much fatter and a fair bit longer for only +0.5 extra EV but it's a hell of a performer. I'm sorely tempted to pick one up anyway. Afterwards if I ever did decide to travel small and light I could still always go with the f1.4...

Philip.

It will not be different than other years, despite the fact that the world around us has changed dramatically. It will be the Summilux 75, although now more on the M7 than on the MM1. More important change is that I will mainly work with ADOX Scala 160 instead of for instance Ilford Delta 100 or PanF Plus50, which I used a lot.

nice! how's the elmarit v1?! never tried it.

Mine was CLA'd by DAG 2 years ago (perfect optics).  Dreamy (glow) until f/4.  Good clarity and contrast beyond f/5.6.

I like using it from f/2.8 to f/4 for the character.  Particularly with B&W film and on the MM246.

Summicron 28asph phase 1 travelling and local shooting.

Summilux 50asph phase 2 travelling and local shooting.

Telyt 135 when I get bored with the 28 and 50.

Usually go out with one focal length and do a second round with another or even a third round when time permits.

Three favorites? Let's see...
1. Elmar-M 50/2.8
2. Elmar-M 50/2.8
3. Elmar-M 50/2.8
... perhaps :D

Last year I sold bits that I wasn’t using (much) to part fund the purchase of the 50mm APO retro edition.  I know the results are the same as the regular APO but it “feels” better in use.  It is now permanently glued to my M10 Mono and will be my most used combo in 2021.

Q2 Mono might be a close second.

Nice set. I’m curious about your experience adapting an M Lens on a Sony.....?!

Mine is a Kolari mod A7s1. Works fine with all my M lenses so far. Never tried to collapse the Elmar-M 50/2.8 fully on it though.

In 2021 I will explore my newly aquired 50 lux bc... which probably will include some ¨benchmarking¨ of my 50 cron and 50 elmar-m as well 😉

Another lens I will challenge somewhat more in 2021 is my 28 elmarit v4.

PS: being a 35 guy since my first camera, I do seems to be sliding somewhat in a new direction in 2021 or...?

Nice I see you’re going with the re-editions only hehe you might have to add the rumored summaron 35 / noctilux 50 to the collection :p

On my list! I had a 35mm summaron f/2.8 (without the goggles) on my M6. I really liked it. Would be happy to have it again. But I've heard the 50mm Noctilux re-edition will come first.

I just might have to actually change my answer as I found a mint 8 elements w/ goggles and that might (most likely) replace the summaron f2.8 :p given the crazy price increase the 8e is seeing I thought it’d best to grab it now or miss it forever hehe any fans of the summaron over the summicron here?

i’d take a summicron v1 goggles over summaron 2.8 goggles any day of the week.

my favorite 35 is actually the summaron 3.5 goggles and i’m not sure why, hah.
