I had both the current 50mm Summilux and the 50mm APO, and sold the Summilux since I don't need two 50mm's.

The APO is - in my opinion - in a league of its own and superior to the Summilux in all means except for the f-stop.

Here's a quick snap I took earlier today when walking my dog. This might only be a boring photograph, and the limited file size in this forum doesn't do the image justice, but holy Moses, it does look good in RAW on my screen.

It's (also) small moments and images like this, that really gets me and which is why I keep falling in love with the 50mm APO. Over and over and...

Wonderful picture. No doubt.

But it would be great to see comparisons between the 2 lenses the APO and the Summilux. I say this as I love the rendering of my Lux without ever having had the APO.

Sorry, but I can’t help you with a side-by-side comparison since I opted for the APO and sold the Summilux.

I had both and sold my Summilux for the Apo. I am vey happy with the decision especially because of the size of the Apo. It is sharp, and it also is my favorite lens on M film cameras. It will be very difficult to decide the quality of the lenses with our downsized photos here, but finally I would prefer the Apo. I think it depends on your style of photography which one is really good for you.

1.)   Summilux 1.4/50 wide open

It probably would have been more beneficial if you had shot the same model and same light etc etc and both at f2 to see the real advantages from the 50 APO. I had a black chrome 50 APO and BC 50 Summilux and I shot as close to the same picture as I humanly could. The 50 APO renders detail in ways the Summilux simply cannot IE: With the 50 APO in the woman's eyes you could easily see the wet sheen over the eyeball and the eyelashes were more distinguished and in general there was a more realistic look. The Summilux provides a lovely and artistic out of focus rendering but with less acuity, sharpness and contrast, whereas the 50 APO provides close to medium format depth and detail. I am old and disabled so uploading files is a challenge but I will try to get some assistance to exhibit what I have described in the differences, but both lenses are wonderful tools so its up to the photographer to decide which look suits them best and if the 50 APO is in budget. Personally I have moved even more to the artistic style of rendering with an E58 f1 Noctilux I purchased new in 1975 and a black paint 50 1.4 pre-asph Summilux. The opportunity to own Leica and other lenses on an M body with such different and unique rendering I feel is priceless.

Both are great, with a preference for the first one...

Well, the first picture is very good qualitywise (its sharp and the light is interesting). I think that most of this discussion about APO is not very rational. Probably the APO is a wonderful lens (I say that without owning it) but when we can not see any distinctive difference between Lux and APO it makes little sens to have a lens with half the light capacity compared to the lux (2.0 istead of 1.4). At the moment I own the very light and small Summarit plus the fast Summilux. For me its the excellent combination of 50mm lenses. I use the combination on the M10. If I had the Monochrom I might consider the APO. As I see it: Leica is my wonderful travel and hiking gear. But Canon is the indispensable gear for everything else

Since about two months by now I added the f/1.2 50mm Canon RF lens to my Canon R5. For portraits as shown above I would never think a second of using the EOS R equipment. Its all about precision of focus and fast reaction (speed).

Based on what I see above I keep my Lux 😃

I still have both the apo and lux, with the former being more preferred

the lux is more like a creative lens compared to the apo, used sparingly for portraits, but the apo can do portrait just fine too

for a side note, i also have the noct. 0.95 and 1.2

for travelling, the apo is a must…it is just a lens fir certainty

Hi, my name is Fred...I have a problem with Leica lenses.

I have a 50 Summilux ASPH,  a 50mm APO, and a 50 Noctilux 1.2 (new). a 35 Summilux FLE and a 35 APO. I love them ALL.

It might seem sensible to not have such duplication of focal lengths, some people pick which focal length or zoom they are going to use, I also pick the look I want from the focal length I choose.

I also have a 28mm Summicron--and I'm thinking about a 28 Summilux. Sigh...

You don’t have just a problem, you are in deep trouble (like me).

Today I bought my second APO 50. It is so damned good.

Did you buy a different versions IE: black chrome, LHSA black paint or silver, silver alloy or another of the same that you already own? Just curious if you have yet tried the 35 APO, I did and now I have to buy it its so incredibly good, better than the 50 APO I am thinking so far.

I used to be a 35 photographer, but my interest shifted more and more towards 50. Now I own one 35 and four fifties. The 2 APOs are identical (black version). I own two bodies, an R and a Mono, and the APO has become more or less my standard lens. I have some more lenses. They are listed in my profile.
