I’ve hit what seems to be a fairly massive bug. I updated to the 2.0 firmware a few days ago before heading out on a trip. Yesterday I was out shooting, and about mid day my evf glitched out pretty bad. I didn’t think anything of it and power cycled. I later noticed that the first half of my day of photos, many of which happened to be an important moment, were gone.

As a long time Leica (and many other cameras) user, I think it’d be absolute sunken costs fallacy infused Stockholm syndrome to go with “sure, don’t update before traveling,” but I’ve *never* experienced something like this throughout all of my aggressive firmware upgrading habits. Nor have I ever wanted to chuck a camera so badly off my hotel deck.

In either case, I still love this thing but Jesus do Japanese camera manufacturers have defect avoidance down so much better than these 5x cost German cameras. Also before anyone asks: I’m using a high end Sony Tough UHS-II card and am *ok* with computers (I’m a software engineer), so no mistakes there.

Speed may depend on the SD card you’re using.  I used a fast Angel Bird card and it took about 1 minute.

That is strange, i used my UHS-II 300/mps card i use to save the photos and it still took me more than at least 5 minutes 😲

I can't find the road from Zurich to Panama on my map.😉

I was then in Costa Rica and drove to Panama, so there was a road, the Interamericana.
Zurich is my hometown, but from 1996 i live in Sardinia (Italy) in summer and Costa Rica in winter.
2019 i travelled July till end of october Europe with my R/V trailer and i guess that will be my future

A big disappointment. What was Leica even thinking? The main point of AF-L is to lock focus BETWEEN shots. If you want to lock it while composing a single shot, then just keep the shutter button depressed half-way. How difficult is that? Perhaps single shot locking is useful for tripod mounted work, but that probably comprises less than 2% of what Q2 users do. Even so, how hard would it have been to have the AF remain locked after releasing the shutter?  Maybe that will come with firmware update v2.1.

or to lock the focus and move the camera to move the locked object there where i wan't to t have it, but to do that i half press the shutter.

When i use a tripod i could/do mostly focus manually as i don't move the camera and usually the object(s) don't move either.

The use and sense of the AF-L for just ne shot is not really clear to me

I wouldn't bet on it. The best thing you could do is to sent a feature request at customer.care@leica-camera.com (I will do the same).

Request sent.  Meanwhile, I am going to disable the AF-L feature. Welcome back, frame lines.

Just a word to the wise from Leica's update instructions: Whatever you do, don't remove the lens!

Removing the lens from your Q2 WILL DAMAGE TO YOUR CAMERA! 😉

Best I can tell Leica does not know how to enable back-focus. My Canon 5D3 is so easy to use in this way. I gave up on Leica. It’s a minor annoyance, but thankfully along with a lot of nice capabilities.

I am guessing that the design of the Leica Q and Q2 lens unfortunately cannot operate in both manual and auto focus at the same time like other cameras (example: Canon 5D3). Leica had to engineer the manual to auto their way, thereby handicapping themselves. The focusing scale and definite minimum and maximum focus stops were apparently deemed of more importance to the designers than back-button focus. But they did accomplish an acceptable back-button focus on the Leica Q. I'm simply incredulous as to why they didn't implement the same on the Q2

As much as I want the weather sealing and extra resolution, I will not be purchasing a Q2 until this issue is resolved.

I understand where you’re coming from, but as a 3 1/2 year owner of a Q and early purchaser of the Q2, I have zero regrets. In fact partly due to the wide angle lens I find no back-focus is fine. You can now touch move the focus point easily. The MF works well and the Macro capability is very nice to always have with me. The sensor IQ and resolution of the Q2 is stunning.

Good luck in your quest.

Dan - I too am an early adopter of the Leica Q and a fellow Coloradan. I bought mine in October, 2015. (I love the camera except for the fact that it freezes so often that it is unreliable for the type of photos that I normally shoot. But that is another story. Leica can't seem to fix the problem.) The main reason that I prefer back-button focus is that it separates the act of focusing from the act of making an exposure. I will often focus on a subject and take many exposures while varying compositions all the while looking for variations in facial expressions and body language. Take a look at james cammack.photoshelter.com and you'll see what I mean. I don't often have time to refocus in order to capture the "decisive moment". Although I like the manual focus options on the Q (and Q2), my 71 year old eyes don't always nail it. If the light level permits, I'll zone focus using f8 or f11 to insure adequate depth of field, an old habit acquired from my early M2/M3/M4 years. (The distance scale on the lens is one reason that I was attracted to the Q.)

Sorry to get so wordy. I hope this explains why back-button focus lock is such an important issue to me and apparently other street shooters as well.

Leica M10 Monochrom has problems with 128Gb Sony TOUGH cards. Maybe some the same bug from M10M crept into the update.

Well I don't shoot video, don't care about touch screen, it's not a sports camera so I never used an other focusing mode than manual (without magnification) or spot, I never had issue with the auto-ISO... Yes the transfert speed is low but as I said: It's not a sports camera, I'm not even sure I ever used the continuous fire mode...

The 2 complaints (not so hard to live with anyway) where to set the focusing point back in the center of the frame when I push the center button of the arrow area (Who is switching screen display so often on the same user profile that he needs a shortcut for this?) and the auto-focus on the back button to use the trigger as a trigger-AEL (like old film time).

It's seams that it's not addressed... Moreover I've learned to live without back button focus.

So I ask myself if this update would be good for me, I don't want to loose the ISO top button I'm using all the time...

Ditto.. I find that loosing the ISO selection in MF is really a pain. For some of us using the Q2 with manual focus, no AUTO ISO and selected speed, this update is not at all worth it. Is there any way to revert to the previous one ? I did the update before reading the forum 😪

They may have left it on to mark the center of the magnified area for focus assist. That wasn't movable before, I think, and it is now. There are also several options of where it gets put by default.

I haven't tested it yet, so that's just a guess.

I don't actually used the magnified focus assist in general shooting. Turned it off because it was frustrating zooming back and forth to compose.

When using MF, you can still move the cursor around with the Dpad. Would much rather have it disappear when switching from AF to MF. Happy to hear if anyone finds out its a new feature to switch on/off in v2 firmware.

I absolutely understand and that’s exactly why I’ve exclusively used back button focus for the past 15 years shooting birds, wildlife and political candidates using a Canon DSLR and big lenses. Camera shooting of course. 😁

I do more landscape, travel, macro and some people photography with my Q/Q2. Shutter button or MF works fine for me.

That’s very disappointing that your camera locks up. I found the Q to be somewhat sensitive to the speed and brand of SD cards. I standardized on SanDisk UHS-I 32GB cards. 16GB cards also worked well. I saw lockup’s when I tried UHS-II cards in it. Good luck.

PM me is you’re interested in meeting sometime depending on where you are. I love getting together with other Leica User Forum folks.

You nailed it!

Everybody want his very own, very special functions but to satisfy everybodys wishes and "needs" is quite impossible.
The solution would be to use the undoubely more than excellent Leica lenses on the camera who fit his very own wishes and "needs"
There is no one-for-all camera from no brand and all cameras i had i needed to adapt the given limitations.
The Q Falily camera series is the king of compact size cameras and compact cameras have their limitations,
the (for example) M10 and the same Summilux lens will be probably the more configurable camera at the double of the price.

I personally was very happy with the Q, then very happy with the Q2 V1.2 and now the 2.0 firmware who solved a lot of "odds"

Thanks LEICA! You did a great job with the V2.0 Update!
