Perhaps because thereks an underlying belief that Leica listens to the opinions expressed here?

I know for a fact that Stefan Daniel reads this forum regularly, and he's the head of global product development.

What puzzles me most is why anyone cares why another person might prefer to use a Monochrom camera versus convert from color. Why do some of us have to keep explaining and defending our passion for B&W shooting?

Not that I don't agree with you, but I don't see this situation as much different for any M owner.  Most folks outside these walls find the notion of spending eight large on any camera perplexing.  Then add in the fact that the device in question uses an antiquated mechanical focusing system and omits nearly all of the tech deemed requisite these days. From the outside looking in, its hard not to think that M shooters are either silver-spooned dilettantes, stark raving mad or both. Intentionally subtract the ability to capture in color, something even an M3 could do, then charge even more money for it and, well, even some within the walls raise an eyebrow.  Recall 'No rear display... preposterous!'?  Seems similar.  Less is only more if the feature omitted is the one you didn't care about. If its one that you do, you tend to question why anyone else would tolerate that omission. Regardless, when you join the fringe element of the fringe element, curiosity and criticism just come with the territory.

Personally, I get the appeal.  What I don't get is why Leica chose to label it an M10M given we're only two days away from the three year anniversary of the M10 announcement.  I suppose it suggests to me that it will be a while before we see a color version of this sensor in an M body.

You're quite right in that some people will never get it. Why does someone spend $5000 on a titanium frame bike with no brakes and no gears? Sometimes, less is more. The same people might question why someone would buy a Porsche 911 Carrera when a 1973 Volkswagen Rabbit with get you from point A to point B with the same efficiency. Most of those who truly don't get it have never held or used a Leica M, likely due to the high price of ownership. I love simplicity in mechanics. The fewer bells and whistles there are on my cameras the happier I am. The first time I held a Leica M back around 1980, I knew I'd be using one for the rest of my photography life.

It's going to be expensive....😕

Not a fan of 41MP either, the 18MP of my M9 still works fine for me.

I'm pretty sure that the 41MP will be a disappointment tomorrow. I just opened a file of my M9M and look what Lightroom says: 36MP!

I've been banking used camera gear with my dealer for the past two years in anticipation of the M10M.  If the current rumor about price is correct, I will come up short but will find a way to make up the difference.  Being partially color blind (red deficiency) I don't trust my interpretation of color files.  I once took a Cibachrome printing course, worked on a print of Half Dome for about 4 hours until it was perfect, then proudly took it to the instructor who gasped and said, "My God!  Who bled all over this picture?"  Today it's not enough to set the white balance and "get away" with letting your software and calibrated printer do the heavy lifting.

Most of any successes I've had with photography have been with Black and White, and like so many people on the Forum, I started many decades ago with a film camera and BW film that we processed in darkrooms we built in the basement of our parents' homes.  I do love the occasional color photograph, especially if the colors are complimentary, subtle and muted.  I have made some garish color photos (some even posted on this Forum).  But I still have a special fondness for Black and White.

No one "needs" a Monochrom camera, and I love my MM1.  Like most things in life it boils down to what makes you happy and gives you pleasure (as long as it's legal😉).

According to a UK dealer's website the price here will be GBP 7250. Hmm!

Yes, and a much bigger hike on other M10 variants than US price with the (temporary?) tariff.

I miss my M9M  which I traded in when the sensor corrosion occurred, so today I did 340 miles of driving and got my order in minutes before the official announcement stampede.

Handed over a full Pelican case of film cameras and lenses that I’ve not used in the last year,  as consignment sale to soften the blow. The surprising comment from the shop was that even user grade M6s are scarce and get good money these days.

The long exposure mode was an unexpected bonus - I can see some Michael Kenna inspired night work.

$13500 AUD here in ova-pay-straya, I think the camera looks beautiful, but that is without a doubt, taking the piss when the M10P is 11800.....

in other markets the M10M comes in cheaper......

Actually it's the same. 12,050 plus GST. US prices typically don't include tax. Ours do.

Picked mine up this morning......

I have owned both earlier iterations of the Mono. I regret selling the MM1, but it went to a friend. I should of loved the 246, but I did not. I almost immediately missed the M9 version and sold it shortly after the M10-D was released. I’ll probably sit this one out. I love the M10-D. So, my bank account is safe so long as they do not release an Mono M10-D. That might prove irresistible. I don’t expect that to happen. Cheers—lt

Isn't that true with any camera? There are always factors one considers when buying gear and what it come down to is what one feels comfortable with and produces the desired result.

Any Leica photographer should be quite happy to see so much excitement over this new Monochrom. It's helping the financial stability of the company.

Absolutely agree!  Myself I only buy my cars, watches and cameras pre-owned and several years old because let somebody else eat the huge depreciation.  Currently enjoying my M240's, even playing around with video a bit after ignoring it a long time.  And even in the film era I only shot about 10% b/w, so I never was tempted by a Monochrom.  But anything that keeps Leica afloat and the rangefinder bodies alive gets a cheer from me.

Have a 240 and MM1. Thought that the 240 shots, once converted to BW in C1, would be good enough to allow change to one camera only. But, while close, the BW shots were not quite at the level of the mM1, which reaches another level of tonality and compares very well to medium format. I’m sure the M10M is yet better. While there is some lusting for the new one, with it being quieter, thinner, higher ISO, the reality is that the MM1 is just fine.
