I have zero issues with eye detect...wearing glasses 100% of the time.  You might try going to the dealer and testing another SL2 to verify its not your camera.

Or, alternatively, something specific to his glasses... lens type and materials, coatings, etc.  Odd that my sunglasses only present issues in portrait orientation.  I’m wondering if there’s some degree of polarization, even though they were intentionally ordered without. More likely a camera issue, but the nearest Leica Store is closed due to Covid.

Thanks - that's what I am using.  Maybe it is the glasses as Jeff suggests.  I will try to dig up an old pair that does not have the same coating to block blue light from screens.

It is unacceptable that in manual mode the FS 60 does not work with HSS? Why???

Could it be implemented with an SL2 firmware update?

This thing is shameful considering the price and considering that the system is completely incompatible with any other brand!

That is something you could -should, if important- have researched before buying.

Funny thing... I just retrieved my old pair of sunglasses, and all works fine.  The strange thing is the old pair is polarized... I know because they were causing rainbow effects with my new car’s windshield when  driving. My new, non-polarized sunglasses fixed that issue, and I figured the side benefit is that they would play better with an EVF based camera, which I didn’t yet own. Live and learn.  So I guess that I now need both pairs, one for driving and one for shooting.  Hope my prescription stays steady.

I tried an old, old pair of glasses without the modern coatings and blue light blocking capabilities and the EVF does not turn off.  There must be some mismatch of the specific glass characteristics and the sensor.  Odd that I have never experienced this in any other camera, including my Q2.  The EVF does initially sense the glasses at the beginning, so perhaps tweaking the sensitivity in a firmware upgrade could be a workaround.  Hopefully someone from Leica is reading this forum.  :)

Thanks for your help in troubleshooting this, Jeff and digitalfx.  Problem is not solved but at least it seems like I can feel comfortable that the camera is not defective (just quirky).

Despite this, it is still my favourite autofocus mirrorless system to shoot with.  I only pick up my Sony now when I need to tap into my far more expansive library of Sony glass.

  • 2 weeks later...

I used the video function for the first time last week for part of a television commercial. I shot 4kc 4:2:2 10 bit MOV LOG files. Haven’t graded the footage yet (which will be the real test) but so far the footage looks good. One frustration however is that these files can’t natively be read by a Apple Mac computer. Work around is to use VLC to view the files but you still don’t get thumbnail previews on desktop which is annoying when checking and cataloging the files.

Could this be solved in a firmware update or is this just the way the Codec is?

Also I just read that the Panasonic S1H is getting a major firmware update in May that will include prores raw output via the HDMI. Could this be happening with the SL2 as well?

Unfortunately you are right. With the SL601 I learned the hard way that you cannot rely to get 'basic' functions with Leica cameras and in some areas they have a very special philosophy. This applies in particular to flash and remote connection. The only way not to be disappointed is to research intensively before buying or to test the camera extensively. But even this does not protect against Leica removing meaningful functions in future firmware updates.

The SL is a wonderful camera as long as you use it within its intended purpose. However, it is not a swiss army knife like comparable cameras of other brands.

I see the S3 which was released after the SL2 just had a firmware update.

Hoping we see one soon.

I'd rather have some features addressed sooner than all later.

The S3 also took 18 months to hit the market following its announcement and showing at Photokina 2018; a glacial pace compared to the SL2 release. But I share the sentiment for some renewed SL2 attention.

The S3 update seemed to fix a few very minor bugs.  The SL2 is missing some announced functions, like multi-shot hi-resolution, that are more complicated.  I'm not sure how these could all get done and tested over Zoom.  I suspect  larger team is involved and this will still take more time.

Among the bug complaints, the most noticeable is the surprising number of intermittent reports (not every time, and only from some users) of "battery not charged enough for 4K or muulti-shot" errors that stop the camera.  In these cases the battery seems to be OK, but the camera stops.  I would hope that one made the short list for the next update.

I’m reminded of the “check battery age” bug on the M typ 240. Perhaps the power supply software is always given to the same programmer.

Never had this with my M240. In which situatons did it show up?

It happened to all early models, was fixed with a firmware update. Was a pop-up alert, perhaps after switch on, my memory won’t say for sure.

The FW fix happened almost 7 months (and 18 pages) after this discussion...and his camera was already two years old...
