Its weird, the issue is worse at times and better at times...I cant find any reason why. Ive gone thru all the setting and turned off anything I think is related. I have kept the display at 120hz though.

The issue I see is most noticeable in even flat lighting like the image I posted earlier. It is not noticeable at all in low light or in high contrast situations. Although in the later (high contrast lighting) its difficult to judge as the blacks are so crushed. I wonder if those not seeing the issue at all are looking under different conditions or if we have variations between cameras. I will add though that my eyes aren't what they used to be, I wear glasses and I am using the diopter. But I have asked several people to look at my tests and all see the same thing I see, so I doubt its me.

Is it just me or is the EVF underwhelming? The image is not crisp, its actually soft (or misaligned might be a better description)...the only way to accurately focus quickly is with the zoom focus aid enabled.

I also think the diopter is off, mine is sharpest at the dead center mark...which is not normal for me.

I haven't used the SL in years, but I remember being blown away by its EVF. This one not so much. I rarely used the zoom aid to focus with the SL, that doesn't seem nearly as easy with the SL2

That really sounds like a diopter issue. My diopter setting is the same as other cameras.  On mine at least my impression is that the EVF is better again than in the SL and manual focus with magnification is really easy. I never think that peaking is sufficiently precise though. Maybe heresy but for me in studio with PAS set the finder is clearer  than my Typ 007 and much more so for manual focus

Also clearer to my eyes and neutral is the LCD at its default settings

I felt that way too...but read my post #104

If I compare the live view to the recorded image inside the EVF back to back, I see a noticeable increase in sharpness. This would seem to eliminate the diopter as the problem.

All of my comments are impressions are not  by test comparisons and I’d course each of us may use the cameras differently. It may be that my stars have aligned with the state of my old eyes and the settings I happen to have and my shooting which is typically all at 2 to 4 metres in studio. I have only shot a few hundred frames so far.

Let me just add...I don't see this as a major issue. The conditions I am describing are not significant, but they are noticeable. It hasn't preventing me from getting accurate focus, but in some situations it has slowed me. That being said, I really hope it can be improved. Overall I love the SL2, and in no way regret the purchase...it has so many upgrades over the SL that address all the issues I had. Mostly related to video, but as a still camera too. Then you add the new Summicron SL lenses to the equation and the SL2 becomes one of my all time favorite cameras. It actually had me thinking about selling off my M10...for a brief moment, then I regained my sanity.

Just tried it.  If I compare the live view to the recorded image inside the EVF back to back, I see the same sharpness, UNTIL I zoom in.  Only then do I see a noticeable increase in sharpness in the recorded image.  The recorded image gets sharper as I zoom in and retains that sharpness in 1x view after I zoom out.

Not so odd ...... I thought I could see differences between the clarity of the S1R and SL2 EVF ...... but that also seemed to vary with subject matter .... sometimes I convinced myself the S1R was better and sometimes the SL2. Possibly the subtle variation noted is a product of the algorithm that renders the sensor image on the EVF that is dynamically changing a selection of parameters .... whereas on review it's just rendering a static fixed image with some baked in adjustments. I Initially thought the SL2 EVF was slightly OOF and that I actively have to focus my eye even with the correct diopter setting, but after a time this impression vanished. Looking at the S1R EVF in contrast is like looking through a window and needs no 'effort'. The optics in the EVF of the two cameras is clearly different. This still doesn't explain why the difference is more apparent on some cameras ... or to some people, than others, although minor variations in the EVF chip itself between cameras is not inconceivable. The issue is similar to the SL 'EVF in sunlight' problem that some complained bitterly about and others could not understand. That also still remains largely unexplained.

What are we taking about here, distant subjects looking soft at 1x live view in the EVF or EVF becoming softer in magnified live view?  To bring up latter as an issue is totally baffling. The two iPhone pictures above in form of compressed LUF JPEGs are totally meaningless.  I shot the α7 IV side by side with the SL2 (see #24 and #28 here: https://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/303396-leica-sl2-dynamic-range/page/2/#comments) and in magnified view, the Sony’s EVF looks less crisp than in 1x live view.

Pics or it didn’t happen.... I don’t see any shots of the EVF at the posted link.

the iPhone 11 xs max pro has a 12mp camera, and we are assessing a 5.7 mp EVF.   Thus it can obviously capture the extent of possible detail shown with the EVF.  I’ll post full res jpegs on Fred Miranda forum for y’all to check out.

the issue is with magnified live view, which is what is commonly used for manual focus M lenses.  And verifying AFS points.

Yup... exactly. When you require mag for critical focus is when the issue is most significant.

BTW... happens on S1R too.

That’s crazy unfortunate,  who knows how Sony gets the full resolution in live view magnification during capture and focusing.  I also value  the s1r’s ability to auto focus single point while in magnified live view, though.  It helps nail focus in one series of steps: magnify onto AF point, half press shutter to focus, and release the shutter to capture.  The SL2’s CURRENT FIRMWARE (!) will change out of magnified live view as soon as you half press the shutter to focus, or press the shutter to take a picture.   The SL2 will change from magnified live view, when using a manual focus lens or MF, when you take a picture as well.

it’s strange but I do believe Leica will update the settings to equal at least the S1r’s ability to remain in live view when the shutter is half pressed or released.

I always use AF-C as I’m taking candid pics of my toddler and/or wife, and they are often moving a little here or there when I’m taking a candid shot, so AF-C and tracking together will make sure you capture the person/subject properly, regardless of their small movement that may happen when you recompose.

I‘m now using the tracking mode and it’s great that it locks on to a focus point when it turns green and I recompose with the box keeping track and moving along with the subject. Thanks for the suggestion.

I have two copies of the 50 Summicron-SL.  When I look through the S1R EVF and the SL2 EVF side by side, they look exactly the same.

Make sure you set the AF mode to “tracking”.

I've only had the SL2 for a couple of days and your advice helped a lot. It's cold and gray, however there was a tiny window of sunlight today so I walked to the local park and took a few practice shots. There was a breeze and the tracking feature with the the AF modes really helped. I don't yet own a Leica lens so it's a Sigma 45mm f/2.8 dg dn and it's shot at f4 ISO 320 1/125 sec. I still can't decide if leaving Pre-Focus on is a good thing, maybe for fast moving shots so the camera is ready...or it just burns thru the battery? Anyway, thanks again!

When I got the camera, I expected terrible EVF performance, according to the comments here. But I noticed nothing special, just that the colors are slightly different compared to SL or to the LCD. I am mainly interested in making fotos. And I saw nothing that would stop me doing that.   The people with the EVF problems, do they actually have SL2s ?  Or are they just trying to find a way to spend their time (while waiting for a camera ... )  The “problems” seem to be really secondary if you hold the camera in hand.

I mostly use AFs and I have no problem taking fotos of people. I find it very reliable and quick. I place the focus point in advance, so that I do not need to recompose. (And, no, I do not use only f 1.4 for all portrait shots.)

AFc is rather for fast movement like team sports. The toddlers I have encountered were not so sportif.  👶😎
