If the SL2 shoots 12-bit 4K UHD at up to 140 frames per second in Cine Mode which the S1R/Q2 sensor definitely isn’t capable of doing, the underpants-eating-and-barfing (in that order to satisfy your relentless but futile hope) cup will have passed over me. 😁

You’ve also committed (a dozen times?) that DR and file malleability are your top priorities.  And just recently said it would ‘definitely’ be 36 or 48 MP.... just before suggesting 50 based on dealer rumors.  I think you’ve covered almost every position.

Good thing you’re not running a Rumors site that depends on supporters.

If it’s not 36mp... you already lost credibility :)

Aren't you the one said it was 36mp for sure?

I said for sure a BSI Sony sensor which shoots up to 10fps in 16-bit mode with great DR. The Cine Mode thing points to the 48.96 MPx IMX313AQK, which was was announced in July. The 36 MPx IMX435 was leaked last December. You better get your credit card in shape, Don.

@Jeff, I was referring to the IMX313AQK and didn’t bother with the .96.

You won’t be laughing when you see links to RAW files comparing S1R and SL2 exposed for Highlights, here and on DPR. 🤣

Rather than pontificating, projecting, and fantasizing about a given sensor's ability to manage highlights and shadows, it would seem more appropriate to concentrate on good photographic technique to mitigate the need for drastic PP, and if that means going old school with a good, handheld light meter, so be it.

As for "cine" mode, who knows what that means to Leica.  But if I were a professional videographer, and I am most definitely not, I would not show up at a client's shoot with a Leica or any other mirrorless, video capable camera but, rather, with something that would impress the client, like an Arri, Red or other purely, video oriented device.

My original question was, what could Leica provide in the SL2 that isn't already available on other manufacturer's exiting cameras.  I guess the answer is, nothing.

Rather than disparaging Leica and their users for being ‘red dot’ blinded you better get ready for those RAW files. I’ll dedicate the threads to you.

Got your goat, didn't I?

I am not disparaging anyone, sir, but I think that too much attention is paid to a brand name and not enough to the art of photography.

If you recall the days of film, we photographers, professional and amateurs like, concentrated on acquiring an image with proper exposure.  Unless the film was to be scanned, there was no option to manipulate in post. It appears that the current approach is to hit the shutter button, hope for a good exposure and if not, fix it in post.  I going to guess that you're response will include a passage about film latitudes and so on, but it remains that proper exposure is key , always has been.  And that's why I do not care about the Red dot, or any other manufacturer's logo, as I am more interested in what the tool  (camera) can provide for me, today, in a cost effective fashion.  Today's cameras are almost entirely electronic, and with technology's constant evolution, IMO, the fact that a camera is constructed to last a lifetime—whatever that equates to—is irrelevant, since it will likely be superseded by the next, latest and greatest.  And that makes cameras almost a disposable commodity.  But that's not to say that a camera that provides for your needs today, will not do so in the future, but it human nature, and the industry's advertising—and this thread has served as confirmation—tends to keep prodding in the direction of replacement.  It's a tiresome exercise that is entirely profit oriented and designed to surgically incise along the plane of our pockets.

So dedicate away, if it will make you feel better.  But rest assured, it will not move me.

My brother in law shot a commercial for Rob Report using a drone and an SL for video. They were quite happy. It still is the person behind the camera who matters.

I'm not saying that the result would not be satisfying, but appearance means a lot to some clients, as they see it as a reflection of what they're paying for.  They see the camera, lights and ancillary equipment long before the final result.

I agree. Let’s be patient, though, wait for the SL2, then start a nice, long thread here and on DPR and post links to RAW files.

It's sad day when one cannot be open minded to the opinion of others.  I think that you have lost sight of the definition and purpose of a proper forum, look it up. It's not about single minded individuals patting each other on the back, it's about an exchange of ideas, regardless of whether they are in agreement with your line of thought or not.

It might be a rather good idea to some combatants having a break and just stop writing ->  and as we are in a PHOTO forum go taking a photo at the end of  a longer walk

The ‘combating’ is called ‘social media marketing’. That’s like asking Henkel to stop advertising Persil on TV. 😁

Because of Cine Mode, I bet it’s the IMX313AQK.

For the SL3 perhaps but it's too late for the SL2 i fear. My own bet is that Leica will use the same sensor as that of the Panasonic with microlenses to fit M lenses as usual. Perhaps those microlenses will enlighten the sensor so that you can underexpose your pics a bit more who knows? Just kidding;).

Ron777,

The world is filled with "Leica users are rich posers who have no talent and would be better off spending that money taking classes, trips, whatever." Go to ANY other photo site and you can swim in that attitude. My understanding, and it could be wrong, is that one of the founding principles of this site is that everyone here has accepted that everyone else here has their own good reasons for using Leica, and attacks on that, in the name of "free speech" or "just asking questions" are not allowed.

I recommend the xkcd comic on free speech. Also google "concern troll".

Exposure, in anything other than controlled or mundane situations, always involves compromise. Wider DR allows us to make fewer of them.

As for there being no option to manipulate a photograph shot with film in post, that is utterly untrue. There were/are tons of ways manipulating the image from using masks to dodge or burn, adding filters, tilting the enlarging surface, altering development and exposure times, etc,.etc, etc.

A interesting vid comparing the DR of film and digital.
