Peter Branch Posted November 16, 2017 Share #101 Posted November 16, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Do you seriously believe that crooks that specialize in Leicas need a logo to recognize the camera? I don't believe any such thing. These people are professional thieves, they will steal anything that they can sell quickly. The fact that they are certain it is a Leica means that they will put in more effort and take bigger risks - it's still a capitalist economy that they are working in. Of course if they are specialists then they will recognise the Leica SL from a distance but the police in Barcelona believe the word Leica simply attracts a larger group of criminals.
Advertisement Posted November 16, 2017 Posted November 16, 2017 Hi Peter Branch, Take a look here Tape over big "LEICA" name on the front of the SL?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted November 16, 2017 Share #102 Posted November 16, 2017 That is what I mean - big, big lenses, etc. = attractive.
Peter Branch Posted November 16, 2017 Share #103 Posted November 16, 2017 That is what I mean - big, big lenses, etc. = attractive. Leica = attractive because it can, apparently, command a significantly higher price in the "market" than Nikon/Canon etc. kit. If the criminals are uncertain then they will not take the risks or put in the effort.
Sheldon! Posted June 1, 2018 Share #104 Posted June 1, 2018 Perp, suffering withdrawal symptoms from insufficient Famous Amos Chocolate Chip Cookies, grabs a camera from the arm of a street photographer. Said photographer turns and chases the Perp yelling "POLICE POLICE!! Said Police hear the cry and join in the chase and become more excited as they pursue overweight Perp down a dead end ally. Perp stumbles over his waistline and falls to the ground shredding both knees and an elbow before hitting his head on the brick wall at the dead end. Police see the torn clothing and blood and assume the Perp had been in a fight while trying to steal the camera so they decide to make this a teachable moment. Photographer arrives as Perp is losing conscientiousness but still tightly holding the stolen camera because his lizard brain is telling him "If I hold on I'll be able to sell this camera and get some FACCCs". While the Policemen are picking up the pieces of two broken nightsticks and an undetermined body part, the Purp uses his one last working finger to peal the black tape off the camera. As darkness and pain are closing in on him, the Purp's last words were " OMG! It's a Le...Li....Lick..OH DAMN!..... I get beat up for some shat box from China. I thought it was a Nikon and I could have made some real money. Moral: Crooks are dumb.
Irakly Shanidze Posted June 1, 2018 Share #105 Posted June 1, 2018 Moral: Crooks are dumb. Well, as dumb as they were, those two Canadian chaps had broken in for the sole purpose of stealing Leica M10 and Hasselblad XD
BernardC Posted June 2, 2018 Share #106 Posted June 2, 2018 I thought it was a Nikon and I could have made some real money. Moral: Crooks are dumb. Not that dumb. Their motivation is to steal something relatively that can be sold quickly. A Leica satisfies neither criteria. That's why thieves would traditionally steal VCRs (back in the day), ignoring priceless home furnishings. They could get $50 for your VCR any day of the week, no questions asked. Your Cy Twombly will raise quite a few questions, won't pay-off for years (if ever), and it will get them a much longer sentence. For all they know it's a $10 copy in a cheap frame. LichtUndDunkelheit Posted June 5, 2018 Share #108 Posted June 5, 2018 Wondering if any of you did the same... Curiously no photography company bothers to pay me to make advertisement of their camera. So yes I always tape that stuff over.
youngjohn Posted June 5, 2018 Share #109 Posted June 5, 2018 Curiously no photography company bothers to pay me to make advertisement of their camera. So yes I always tape that stuff over. In that case, do you tape over your car badges as well?

Peter Branch Posted June 5, 2018 Share #112 Posted June 5, 2018 (edited) …...Their motivation is to steal something relatively ,(?), that can be sold quickly. A Leica satisfies neither criteria. Not according to the Spanish Police, the thieves ignored a host of items of the sort you allude to in both my apartment and that of a family member in the adjacent apartment. tobey bilek Posted June 6, 2018 Share #113 Posted June 6, 2018 I do not mind the Buick or Chevrolet logo on my cars. The store where they were purchased logo drives me NUTS. Know all the tricks to get them off.
Jeff S Posted June 6, 2018 Share #114 Posted June 6, 2018 The store where they were purchased logo drives me NUTS. Know all the tricks to get them off. Simple....if you buy new, never let them put them on. I won’t settle the bill without checking. One dealer forgot and sent the car back to the service area to have it removed and the surface detailed. Jeff
pico Posted June 6, 2018 Share #115 Posted June 6, 2018 (edited) If a photographer feels that he or she is 'taking' a photograph then he or she is doomed to be stuck in a whirlpool of self inflicted conflict - because in their mind they are stealing something. If a photographer understands that he or she is 'making' a photograph - the dynamics and mindset change - in their mind they are making something. The observers of a photograph care not, nor know what was the mindset of the photographer. That is one characteristic of a photograph, embedded in its nature. So much for verbose self-centered literate-oriented irrelevant philosophy out of its realm. Edited June 6, 2018 by pico
Sandokan Posted June 16, 2018 Share #116 Posted June 16, 2018 It's funny how I assumed before reading, that PMendelson was trying to hide the fact that it was an expensive German camera. Isn't it amazing how the simple act I committed of reading the posts, led me to understand that PMendelson was more concerned about people reacting to reading that it was a Leica and having an interaction with the photographer. Based upon all the posts heaping ridicule on the OP for thinking that taping over the Leica would stop it getting stolen, leads to me to conclude that the general public are more capable to read than some forum members :) As for cars being de-badged, BMW and Mercedes answered a survey showing that mostly it was the bottom end of the ranges being debadged but only some of the top end. I read that about 10 years ago, so do not know if it is any different now.

Suggesting that the S and Clux users mask their badges only? btw from where I am, cars cost 3 times more than when you can buy them from where you are. Going by your logic, there are no cheap cars in Singapore. A toyota corolla easily cost equal to a mercedes or bmw. Debadgeing is to keep the cars looking clean and uncluttered here in Singapore. Our land size might be limited but GDP per capita isn't low. Edited June 16, 2018 by sillbeers15
6bit Posted July 26, 2018 Share #118 Posted July 26, 2018 It's often just for a cleaner aesthetic, the same reason I prefer a black dot to a red one. Nothing to do with discretion, which has to do with the photographer, not the camera (except for LF). Jeff Bingo!
6bit Posted July 26, 2018 Share #119 Posted July 26, 2018 While I’m all about rebadging a car for a cleaner look I am not bothered by the camera brand. I was with a Nikon photographer two weeks ago that had tape over his Nikon. I couldn’t understand. The Leica is huge on the SL but I like it. Placing tape over that would not look clean. sunil Posted July 26, 2018 Share #120 Posted July 26, 2018 Being 5 foot, five inches tall, I naturally follow number 2 in your list. However, I have a massively over inflated sense of self importance, and tend to strut about like Mussolini, often with an entourage -- What advice would you offer to help me appear more insignificant? Strut like Napoleon? Works for me and I'm the same height.
