[...] while later cameras had a silver-plated plastic disc and gearwheel assembly with some parts glued. After this was found to be the cause of the problem, Leica went back to using the original solid metal design.

Another example of an amateur bean counter trying to make his mark.

Err.. a letter in the German Forum is not a public statement? After all, it is a German company.

Is that leica themselves posted it or someone else who get the letter posted it?

I really wish mine is problem free

Or may be you kindly enough send me the link? Im quite curious lol

Thanks jaap

Well it is a letter from Leica after all to a user of this Forum in Germany. Its states clearly what I wrote in the post above. It is true though that the letter is not public but it means probably even more as it did not go through legal plus marketing plus management . . .

Out of that one could conclude that the problem occured in the very early production only.

How could one conclude this?

According to your quote it was was "identified at an early stage", not early production units only.

I have the earliest production unit and mine is rock solid. I am not gentle with the ISO knob in the least.

I suspect a small range of cameras are affected and it was either a change to a part or someone in the production chain made a mistake. Regardless, it seems you either have the issue or you don't as those that have been affected so far seemed to have discovered the problem fairly quickly rather than after months of use.

It's report like this that gave me pause in considering pre-rdering or buying a new-production M10...I know Leica would repair it under warranty, but how long would I have to wait?

I'm monitoring such reports in various forum with interest...the good news is that there aren't so many; and no reports of sudden death...

Maybe even Leica had to take time until a new model settles down.

  • 2 weeks later...

I purchased my black and white M10 in February in NYC. ISO worked fine. Till a few hours ago. The ISO stuck at 400. The problem however is much worse for me. I am in the second day of my two weeks long, throughly planned photo trip back to my hometown of Moscow, RU. Spent $$$$ for the trip, made a lot of plans for photos. And now ... what??? Get my iPhone out of pocket instead???

That is to ones who think that ISO dial is just a non-issue as it affected very few. Very sad.

Hi all,

Same problem with my black M10 #5152722. ISO setting is stuck, for me at ISO100, after using the camera for two months. Very disappointed by this. Will visit the dealer first thing Monday, hopefully for a speedy solution as I'm off abroad and I need my camera. Hopefully he can replace it on the spot, or lend me a demo until it's fixed at a service center.

I've frequently used the dial as I think it is a great feature.

Hopefully Leica will quickly come up with a solution, it's serious if this happens on assignment etc. and suddenly you're stuck with one ISO setting...

Hi again,

just picked up my M10 after having been repaired at Leica. It was handled by a fairly large dealer in Germany. They said it was the first such issue they had heard about and they have sold around 60 M10s I believe. They said similar repairs take around 6 - 8 weeks, but they said they would push the process. I got my camera back after less than 4 weeks.

I did not receive any explanation, excuse or compensation from Leica. I find that a bit annoying after having dished out for a top money (hopefully top quality) product and it stops working after a few months. It's always a hassle to deliver and collect the camera, not to speak about being without your new toy for 4 weeks... It's a kind of comfort that Leica during the repair cleaned the sensor, adjusted the range finder mechanism and installed the latest firmware.

The new dial has a new feel to it, so they might have replaced it. It is still relatively hard to lift up, but it seems to turn with a different feel and friction. I do not intend to change the way I use my camera, usually I've been setting the ISO manually on the wheel to be in full control of the photography. I hope the problem was a childhood disease and that it will stay in good health onwards...

Thank you for reporting back, it's worrying they claimed only first issues of such... like denying it but i wish it's true though so no many being affected in such a way

Enjoy

He said The "dealer" he worked with had never seen the issue before and sold 60 cameras.

Strangely, there hasn't be any report in this thread of a stuck ISO wheel since Jul 13 -- almost a month ago.   Afraid of the problem, I have keep my wheel on 'M' and have instead used the menu, meanwhile monitoring this thread to see the evolution of the issue.  At first thought, the lack of recent reports suggests it would be safe to go back to using the wheel.  However,  I am now wondering if the reason there have not been reports in the last month is that, other than the few who have reported using their wheels heavily without problem, many forum members mostly likely to report the problem here are also keeping their wheels on M.   If so, it may not be so safe for me to back to using it.  Thoughts?

Well, I wasn't thinking so much in terms of use/stress that would cause the problem as just any use that would reveal it.  Once someone decides to commit to only using manual, he will not use the wheel at all and won't know if the wheel is defective (or prone to the problem) even if it is.

Isn't it more likely that only a limited number of cameras was affected and that Leica has the problem under control?

Before the reported iso wheel issue I had kept the wheel on auto iso. Now I use it heavily to "provoke" any issue with my camera. I rather like to see a failure of mine sooner than later. Obviously the approach to the problem is very individual [emoji3]

I would have done it too... (If I had M10, I have M240).

If you want some help, lend me the camera and I will be delighted in helping "provocation". :D

Perhaps it's too early but I think we are not far from being able to say that the problem is contained.

We have 10 reports of the failing ISO setting here, all between May in mid July. In the German forum I am the only one who reported that it hit him. Heavy usage of the wheel does not seem to cause it. It happens suddenly, even if one uses the wheel very rarely. So it should have hit those whose cameras are faulty already. It seems as if there was either a faulty part involved or some sort of wrong assemblage but in both cases it does not concern all M10 bodies but only a limited number.

So let's wait some more weeks if there a further reports. If there are new cases even from people who got their camera in the first weeks, this could be a reason to stay cautious. Setting the wheel on M enables all settings in the menu - even Auto-Iso. You don't have to use the wheel. If there are no new cases during the next weeks, I'd say that the problem will not even be remembered in a few months - then use your whell as you like it.
