Does anyone here own both an early model and late model MP?  I'm interested in seeing if the rear doors are actually swappable while maintaining an accurate light meter reading and if the early model door is actually the same as the M6 or it's just the same cosmetically.

Does m6 ISO door interchangeable with MP? - Leica M-A / M7 / MP and Film M - Leica Forum (l-camera-forum.com)

Thanks! A lot better than the sharkskin (I had an early model used Chrome MP before I traded it in for this new black one). The sharkskin is grippy but for me personal it doesn't feel and look right on such a premium camera.

Just curious: does anyone have any information (videos, articles or just bits of information) on how a Leica MP is made? I've found some videos / articles on digital M's but nothing about the current production process of analog M's.

See the article in Film and Digital Times for February 2017 which covers a tour of the Portugal Plant where the MP is made.

I had both and drew the same conclusion

I guess that was the point. Function over form. I actually prefer the look of that original 'bathmat' covering – it is part of what makes the MP such a classic design and I think the new covering takes something away from that.

I totally agree with you. I prefer also the original one.

Optically I liked the old leatherette a lot...

BUT

I saw many MP´s with air bubbles under their skin. My first MP went to Solms two times to solve the problem. And the result were...

bubbles.

The new leatherette gives the MP a different appearance, that's correct. It looks no less elegant AND has no more problems...

how does the M-A compare with the M4 ?

I have an M3 and M4 but like you, the M-P siren song fills my ears

They're both great cameras.  I personally find the M-A a bit smoother in operation (for example, the film advance seems smoother) and that is with a recent YYE CLA of the M4.  I find the M4 viewfinder to be every bit as bright as the M-A's, despite reading reports to the contrary.  Maybe I just got lucky with my M4.

Nothing really to complain about with either camera, they both work well and are a joy to use.  Which might explain my desire to add another - or two 😉

Apart from difference in metering, what would make you want an MP?

black paint? 😏
