It will be interesting to see what impact this will have on the availability and prices of used Hasselblad HC/HCD lenses...

The X1D is a seriously good platform. I am off to Kangaroo Island this weekend and for the first time since I bought the X1D (not long ago really), it is staying at home.

As good as the package is, and as DEEP into the photo as you can go on the X1D, when I go back to the SL files I prefer the colour and the way the Leica glass draws and "pops" at that first glance at 100%. As profligate and unecessary as it is, I am enjoying running the systems side-by-side. I honestly can't say which I prefer... although geez the SL system is expensive by the time you've bought all the lenses!

I am also guilty of running both systems - it’s fun but expensive. The rendering of images is very different and sometimes I choose one camera over the other based on this. I find the X1d files to be subtle with very appealing colour rendition (especially when processed using Phocus) and great depth. I agree that SL, rather than pulling you in, jumps out a little more. It’s all very subjective, but they are two great systems and I’m very pleased with how each continue to be improved via firmware- in the case of Hasselblad with dramatic effect.

This is my frustration with Leica.

I'm hooked on the rendering and aesthetic their lenses have but I just wish there was a high MP body option.

It's 10 years since their last high pixel offering.

What is this thread giving to an SL user ?

What kind of useful insights ?

Is this thread in the right place ? What has it to do in the SL forum ?

Forum readers needn’t own the gear being discussed. Insights can be as much or more appreciated by those interested in the system and/or comparing alternatives. User posts are helpful, especially from those using both systems.

Leica, and the photo industry in general, is increasingly segmenting systems, and now adding higher MP and/or larger sensors. The advantages/disadvantages of the systems and approaches is of great interest, confusion and debate. With some clamoring for a higher MP SL2 (or an S008 of some kind), the topic is fertile.

I happen to be one person considering th SL and X1D, or a successor. Why not have that discussion in an SL forum where users are likely to offer opinions?

And I am one that used to own an SL.  Even though I'm out of Leica, I still follow the threads in anticipation that I could get back into the system (either SL or M), in the future.  Like Jeff, I am also considering the X1D.  But, and for me it's a big but... given the stellar image quality and flexibility in optics available with 35mm digicams, I question if the vast majority of clients would notice the difference in image quality. The readers of this and other photo-blogs might notice, but sadly not the majority of clients IMO.

Ah but mf systems like the X1D isn't just about capturing the scene like any 35mm system, it's really about what you can do with the file after that. Straight comparisons of non challenging scenes is not why I would get a X1D. It's when it gets challenging to deliver that the reasons to get a whatever exotic stuff that's designed to overcome difficult problems come into play. If you deliver, your job is not on the line. Nor is your client's job for that matter.

It's our job to save our client's buns  :D

I have the SL system and am considering replacing it with the X1D and/or another medium format system. Or, I may just add some of the other SL lenses.  I enjoy reading the opinions as I ruminate on a decision.  From looking at the X1D photographs, IMO they are superb with detail and color.

I enjoy reading the comparisons and opinions of those who partake in the conversation.

Why not just bypass the thread if it is of no interest, right?  Easily enough done.

Well said, we can really get benefit out of LUF participation if we, at times, compare and challenge what Leica has on offer rather than just consider it as a pinnacle of perfection in every way imaginable.

I broke into the Leica system by exploring Leica R lens on Nikon DSLR camera following and participating in discussions on NikonCafe.  We live in democracy and dare I say this is allowed.

Thank you for that photo. I have tried the X1D and love the images, but the slow shutter gives me pause, as I'd like to use the X1D in more versatile settings.  I'm going to compare the S 007, as well.
