Do you still have questions about the Leica SL?

We'll have a Leica SL workshop with Stefan Daniel and Stephan Schulz for Leica Forum members this Friday (November 13th).

If you have questions we should ask the Leica experts - or try them out, please let us know!

I'd love to know why they went with lens rather than in-body stabilization, but would not expect a full answer at this point, as they are constrained to defend the decision actually made.  The extra depth required in the Olympus bodies doesn't seem a sufficient reason, but patent issues and a desire to emphasize longer focal lengths may have been a factor. If there will be wide angle primes offered as SL lenses, will they be stabilized?

I forgot to mention -- will the R to SL adapter support transfer of the information in ROM R lenses to the SL?  Or at least can they say which information is of use in the SL and will be preserved for automatic use?  Will the adapter offer the mechanical linkage to know the set aperture and automatically stop down.  Are they prepared to offer more details, such as a schedule for when the functions supported will be announced.  And when it should ship?

As background to R lens owners -- are ROM upgrades still possible for older R lenses?  Advice varies on this question, so it would be good to have a more definite answer.

1. +1 on why not in-body image stabilisation. I understand it my be limitations of the technology at FF but an explanation would be helpful.

2. Is EFC shutter or totally electronic shutter possible, and can that be implemented sometime in the future by firmware?

Given the fact that prime lenses are by and large of simpler design than multi-element zooms, and also the fact that the SL is deemed to be (one of) Leica's 'professional' cameras:

Does Leica have a commitment to produce a range of SL AF prime lenses of sufficiently wide aperture to make them attractive propositions (especially with e.g. matched APO extenders) for potential SL users … if so, what might be in the pipeline … and if not, why not?

Thank you.

My question - Leica stated that they could not compete in the FF DSLR market when the plans for an R10 were dropped. The SL's obvious competitor is the A7, but it also competes with top end DSLR's and the big manufactures no doubt have their own FF EVIL cameras in development.

What does Leica offer that is sufficiently different, to compete in this market now?

Zeiss are making AF prime lenses for the Sony A7 cameras, some of which are receiving positive reviews (e.g. Zeiss Batis 85mm f1.8). Could these lenses work on the SL?  As an interim solution until Leica develops its own SL primes, is there a possibility of an adapter that would enable these Batis lenses to work (both AF and AE) on the Leica SL?  Would Leica cooperate with Zeiss in making such an adapter?

I have some M lens, and I am using these on my Sony A7rii as well as on the M240. Without the focusing mechanism of the M-cameras, is the non-magnified images inside the 4M EVF accurate enough for an ultra- sharp focused picture? I understand that it is possible to magnify the images during focusing and it will be accurate. However, according to my experience in A7rii, it takes time and is never as fast as using the rangefinder or simply using the non-magnified EVF image. Peak focusing is not really helpful for accurate focusing.

Will focus bracketing with autofocus lenses be added to the SL? ie. User sets near and far focus points, then the camera automatically takes multiple shots, one at each focus step, based on the lens aperture. The resulting focus stack can be merged in Photoshop, Helicon Focus, or Zerene Stacker to achieve a single image with everything in focus. Very useful for landscape photography with near and far subjects in the frame.

Just a few questions : )

1. It seems to me that the SL cannot be remotely triggered by pocket wizards? Am I right?

2. Any plans for a wireless (radio frequency) remote control of multiple cameras and TTL flashes?

3. Or is wifi the preferred medium for remote release for the SL? If so, are there any plans for remote control of multiple bodies?

4. Is the EVF view for TL lenses a cropped 1.5X or full screen?

5. What's the weight of the SL's handgrip?

6. Any plans for a 20-60mm f2.8/4?

Many thanks!

Alex

Question: Do you plan allowing focus magnification to be activated by the joystick?

1) .....and/or allow magnification to be mapped to a different button other than bottom left?

2) Once focus peaking has been activated does it stay activated until de-activated?

3) Will the SF 58-D flash operate properly with the SL and will the focus light on the flash come on?

How quickly will Leica respond to firmware updates? In evaluating the SL at the store, I find myself liking the basic design quite a lot and most of the controls seem pretty handy as is, but there are a few things that I'd like to see available in the control customizations that aren't (or don't seem to be) available at present:

- Direct EV compensation for A and T modes using the top and rear dials (no additional button press required)

- Ability to swap which dial is used for shutter/aperture control

- Ability to map focus magnification assist and peaking to alternative soft key buttons

- Ability to export and import more than one set of User Setups without conflict

- AutoISO in M mode (I was unable to ascertain whether this feature was supported; it is on the X typ 113 and is very useful)

- More B&W JPEG options than just "Grayscale" ... The M-P typ 240 has excellent B&W JPEG options that I'd like to see in the SL as well.

thanks!
