stevelap Posted June 5, 2015 Share #181 Posted June 5, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) ..................It's obvious that the open optical viewfinder of the M together with the beautiful and precise focusing is a major draw and USP. I suspect Leica will continue to develop that system whilst it still sells. I am also sure that an EVF version could comfortably exist alongside for people with different desires................ Yes, I doubt that the rangefinder M will disappear completely. Even if a future M in one or two iterations time sports an EVF or hybrid viewfinder, I can see a rangefinder digital M-T(raditional) existing in parallel with it. As for the Q, very interesting, although I'm keen to see the full official specs next week. Very nice to see a built-in EVF (state of the art in terms of mpx this time too) rather than a clip-on. Advertisement Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 Hi stevelap, Take a look here Leica Q -general-. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
adli Posted June 5, 2015 Share #182 Posted June 5, 2015 Being fixed lens, my guess is that this is only an intermediary step to a full frame autofocus system camera. Will close the gap in Leicas line up and provide an offer to the ones who wants to use Leica glass but wants auto focus. My guess there is a market. Rangefinder is nice, but a niche product. A complimentary autofocus could increase Leica market footprint
sturmi Posted June 5, 2015 Share #183 Posted June 5, 2015 What I don't understand is, why not make the lens interchangeable. Would be an interesting system camera with those specs. Could be cannibalising om the M, but then it is better to be cannibalised by yourself than by others. Leica should have learned that 50 years ago. Because Leica is copying Sony: first the RX!, then the A7, then...

earleygallery Posted June 5, 2015 Share #186 Posted June 5, 2015 Leica had no digital M 10 years ago. From zero sales it can only go upwards.... The M system isn't just about digital. Sales of the film M's have apparently been strong too.
wlaidlaw Posted June 5, 2015 Share #187 Posted June 5, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I hope the decision to go with a 28mm lens is not just to differentiate it from Sony's RX1, with its 35mm Zeiss lens. Could I live with a fixed 28mm lens as my "everyday" lens. Not sure I could, whereas I could happily live with a 35mm. Still with an M240 and both 28 and 35 ASPH Summicron's and 35 ASPH Summilux, the Q is not aimed at me. Also I like AF for telephoto lenses but not for standard or especially wide angle, as I like to be sure what I am focusing on. Wilson

Paolo.Battista Posted June 5, 2015 Share #190 Posted June 5, 2015 Because Leica is copying Sony: first the RX!, then the A7, then... I would like if Leica would "copy" Sony for the A7. It will be the first real serious Mirrorless FF ever made.

leicatraveller Posted June 5, 2015 Share #192 Posted June 5, 2015 It's certainly the most interesting Leica digital 'compact' yet. If it had an f1.4 or f2 35mm lens and an optical finder I'd have been very interested. 28mm is really just a bit too wide for general use IMHO, although that said I do often use the 25mm Skopar on my lllf as a street camera, and being FF one can presumably crop the image easily if needed. My immediate questions are if the 'Summilux' lens is a true f1.7 or will it really be a variable aperture like with the X ? Will it be optically superb, or will it rely on digital correction for distortion? i also don't like the 28mm...was much better a 35mm lens, 28mm is too wide as "one lens only". i also consider 24mp not so much for heavy cropping, maybe with a 36mp sensor you can think to crop digitally.... viramati Posted June 5, 2015 Share #194 Posted June 5, 2015 For me this announcement comes at an interesting time. I have all but totally switched to the Sony A7 series of cameras and lenses and though I still have my M and a host of leicas lenses they now spend most of the time in the safe with the M getting occasional use for street work along with the summicron 28 asph. I have just bought the new Sony Fe28/f2 lens which for £360 is an amazing little lens especially when combined with the A7s and I was thinking that this would now be my go-to street combo. BUT I have to say that a leica body with 24mp sensor and a fixed f1.7 28mm lens with a manual focussing lens with a DOF scale is very tempting even at the projected price. so I may sell all my other leica gear (apart from my elmarit-M 90 at 135 apo-telyt) which will easily finance this camera with money left over. So strangely I find this an exciting camera and can't wait to see how it performs
viramati Posted June 5, 2015 Share #195 Posted June 5, 2015 The A7 and ii are not serious !!!! LOL Really I find the A7 series of cameras to be more than serious. Of course they have their flaws and drawbacks but on the whole I can get more out of my A7II and A7s than I can out of the M system
