Apparently the ISO dial is slightly offset versus the rest of the older film M's, with a slightly smaller diameter.

What difference could that possibly make?

Would you or anyone know what the material used to cover the black chrome M-A is? For me this material is absolutely just right and I'd like to add it to another camera I have. But I have no idea what it is and where to source it from. I don't know of another Leica camera that has this exact same material?

I have Monochrom(s) with same covering, so this leatherette can be adapted to other M bodies.

Never seen on other film M though.

Just ask Leica or your prefered dealer if they can provide you this covering for your camera.

Whilst I'm here and as I'm curious, why is the M-A having the suffix, (Typ 127)?

When Leica introduced the successor to the M9 they called it the M Typ 240 and this pretentious naming convention was extended to all the other products (Monochrom Typ 246, etc.). The M-A was given the product designation Typ 127.

Marco,

If possible, go to the shop which you plan to order/buy your future M-A with your M4.

If possible, compare the viewfinder of your M4 with newer present M (not necessary M-A).

Let us know what you see.

And dear Marco, please let us know if the serial number is at least as high as indicated by ambivalent in his post with a photo you find in this thread( #5 151 104).

Imo all MP cameras have a brighter viewfinder than the venerable decades-old M4.

A comparison in the store of the M-A you plan to buy with the viewfinder of an older MP (or even M-A) would make even more sense.

Finally I reached the funds to order my M-A. At the Leica store Florence was not available so it was ordered directly in Wetzlar. It will probably come in late Sectember October, because they tell me it will be produced with the next batch. The M-A are in fact assembled in a few pieces a year. I should therefore have the latest model and will be able to answer the questions on the viewfinder.

Good Morning MarcoIT,

Why you wait so long, to receive your dream ? Send an Email to Meister Camera Munich , adressed to Mr. Schulz , or even call him. The Store has as far as I know, a black and a chrome one in stock. Very fine choice. I owe an MP chrome Version, which makes me also happy, even with an Elmar M 2,8 50mm also the chrome version.

Lot of Greetings from Munich. And would like to hear from you, if you can get it very soon.

Andreas

Peter and Marco,

I think that your futur M-A would be of same batch 😉.

When they arrive, please let us know their serial numbers if you don't mind.

I don't use my Summarit 50 as much as I perhaps ought but it is a very good match for a film M.

Yes it is quite a good workhorse for general photos, although I probably use my 28mm Elmarit more.

Still very tempted to join you guys. Anyone know the facts about future production - are Leica making another batch anytime soon?

When I bought mine a couple of weeks ago, I was told that a new delivery is expected in a few weeks.

Greetings everyone,

Perhaps you've seen my thread about my wanting to purchase an M-A. I have been debating whether or not to purchase it's so expensive, but I think it's obvious that I will be buying one soon- the appeal of having a brand new, fully mechanical, and super sleek looking M is just far too great. This will be my first Leica, which I will pair with either a Summicron 35 or 50 to start- I am very excited.

A couple things I'm wondering about:

I see in recent posts above mine mention of a new batch coming in the next weeks... how can I verify that the one I plan to get will be from this latest batch?

Does it perhaps make sense to purchase one abroad so that a VAT refund can be applied at the airport? I live in Canada, but will be in Europe for a couple of months soon and could purchase from Leica Store Vienna or if there is one in Milano that's a possibility too.

Those of you with the black chrome M-A, how are you finding the finish to hold up over time? I know it's an item meant to be used, but I would just hate for something so beautiful to immediately show signs of wear, like the older MP's which quickly showed their brass- I know some people like the look, but I would love for the M-A to stay stealthy matte black for a long time! It is such a beautiful camera.

I have read in a couple of places things like "the older MP's are better than the new ones" and about some issues with the M-A- is any of this true? I can't imagine how such an expensive niche (actually fetishist) product in 2019 could be allowed to slip past QC with any problems... we are talking about $5,000 film camera bodies ($6,400 CAD where I live, in Canada)- there should be no problems whatsoever!

I am very excited to start my Leica journey. After holding a Leica (always different one) only a few times in my life, I instantly fell in love with it simply because of how incredibly solid they feel and how lovely the focusing system is. If the VAT refund is a possibility, purchasing one at Leica Vienna would make an already special camera that much more special as that is one of my favourite cities where I have some great memories.

Now I go back to reading and drooling over this thread...

My comment on the black chrome M finish...

I used M4 in many units over years of use Silver chrome, Black paint and Black chrome so I had some years of user experience for Leica M "finish".

Silver chrome M4 is the best holding finish over time (so I bought M-A in Silver chrome for this last mechanical M maybe for my remaining days).

The Black paint M4 as everybody knows wears up quickly.

Black chrome M4 kept quite well the black but over time became more mat, duller but with nice overall patine.

My black M-A doesn't have time to become duller, it's always "like new", but I use it less than my former M4(s) which I sold or traded since M-A(s) bought.

Please have a look at this "old picture" posted a while ago somewhere in this thread (I don't have the BP MP anymore, but keep the M4 for now as it operates great).
