I've been trouble free since purchasing my M-A. I did buy it used in 2015 but I don't think it actually HAD been used to tell you the truth. I've had no issues with frame spacing or winding or focusing or anything. It just works.

Thanks, you've saved me explaining. :D  I have a theory that the leak may come through the film rewind knob when it is lifted up in bright sunshine. I have a habit of periodically tightening the film in the camera and I sometimes do it two or three times in a short period of time. When I thought about this possibility I made a conscious effort to avoid doing this in the field and the incidences of this weird light leak was reduced down to just a couple of times over the remaining months of the summer. I eventually sent the camera back to Wetzlar in October, where it remains.

It's just a theory and I may be barking up the wrong tree – when I tried to test this by shining a torch in the area of the rewind knob (lifted up) I couldn't see any light leaking through into the film gate area. It's also worth pointing out that I used this camera for many dozens of rolls of film over 18 months before the problem surfaced and it is something I haven't seen with my other (original replacement) M-A at all (now two and half years old with many rolls of film through it).

Hi guys, i was deciding between an MP and an MA for my first Leica, and decided to ask Leica directly on some of the issues that were splitting my decision, like for example the problems with the light leak, rewind crank, etc and the origin of the chassis... is it an MP chassis or a dedicated one for the MA?... well, Leica responded:

Dear Hernán,

Thank you very much for your mail and the interest shown in our products.

The Leica M-A has the same chassis as the MP for example. The battery compartment is covered and the skin is continuous.

Thus there is no risk of protrusion in the location where the MP model has the battery compartment, in front.

I hope this information has been useful.

Best regards

You should have asked them what their support is like. When they only have one technician working on film cameras it doesn't really matter what kind of chassis the M-A uses, they can't service the cameras in any kind of reasonable time.

Has anyone noticed the chrome finish on their camera being soft? My managed to mark one corner with a strap rub, for perhaps just one minute. I opted for chrome for its hardwearing nature. I’ve had this same strap on my chrome M6 without issue. But of course it has the protectors in place. But I messaged my man at leica hq and he wants to inspect it. It’s being collected next week from my home in Berlin. Pretty good service. Perhaps I’m lucky and owing to my previous relationship with the company, they treat me this way? I’ll report back on their findings.

Some ten years ago, I bumped a wall with a chrome M7.  Not hard enough to dent the metal, or knock the rangefinder, but a big chunk of chrome came off, revealing the brass (?) underneath.

Just curious, but why not a refurbished M3, M2 or M4?

Just curious, but why not a refurbished M3, M2 or M4?

I had used already M2, M3, M4 (and more Ms) for decades.

When M-A appeared in late 2014, I didn't hesitate to buy this new "miracle reborn dinosaurus" to replace my MP.

MP was nice (used some years before that) but viewfinder (very clear) was some sort of retrograde for their broken-frameline to show the meter LED.

Now when I compare those oldies M2/3/4's finders to M-A's , I'm happy pulling the trigger in 2014 :).

For me (as user and just me  ;) ) new M-A has nothing in common with those oldies well maintained.

Wait a minute, and M-A does accept Leicavit M or Motor M that I happend to use from time to time.

As far as I know, yes it is safe. I only have the newer version, however. Anyone else try that combo?

Thanks. The M-A instructions do not exclude any M system lenses, unlike the M246 instructions that state specifically that it is all right to use the 90 mm collapsible Elmar in the extended mode, but not to collapse the lens on the camera. The Macro Elmar–M does not extend into the camera in the collapsed position, whereas the old 90 mm collapsible Elmar extends about 12 mm into the camera. No problem on my M3, of course, and I assume the same for my M-A, but I just wanted to check, so thanks for indulging me.

Ernest - do you have the 90 collapsible? I also am in Long Beach and could bring my MA if you want to tag up this weekend to try it out.

Eric

Yes, I have a collapsible 90mm Elmar and an M-A, but I just wanted to double-check it was safe. I would hate to experiment on your M-A, but I certainly appreciate the offer.
