At this point, it seems that it is a camera that has everything that no-one wants.

No VF. I can't believe they actually did that "again"... for the third time.

Smaller than FF... Sony is as pleased as punch... and so are a lot of other people.

Then the lens is absolutely nothing to write home about.

I prefer a viewfinder, but millions of people use cameras without them and see happy with such cameras.

Again, the vast majority of digital cameras that are sold don't have full frame sensors.

Then the lens is absolutely nothing to write home about.

The few samples I've seen from the camera look very good.

I think you are confusing what _you_ wouldn't buy with what no one will buy. I'll confess it's not a camera that I would buy, but then again I wouldn't buy an SLR - and they seem rather popular.

Jaap, I think you know we are talking in context of 'awards for photographs' in this context, which are usually credited to the photographer. I don't see any images in the link you posted?

Dunk is confusing awards for photographic ability (of the photographer) with the type of awards you mention.

Why does this vario zoom loose so much light over such short zoom range. F3.5 - 6.4 from 28-70 mm equivalent focal length. Every cheap kit goes from f3.5-5.6 over 28-85mm. Maybe there is hope that Paula is FF after all?

This camera does seem so compromised.

Although I have registered with my dealer is case there's something to surprise us, it looks like I will be disappointed.

- No FF

- No EVF built-in

- No interchangeable lenses or ability to mount M lenses

- Limited fixed lens, lens speed and zoom ratio.

Oh dear. Maike Harberts (if she still manages the X line) needs to do better. I expect the camera will sell well in the luxury P&S segment but I was hoping that, for once, Leica were going to introduce a ground-breaking camera product instead of which they are still pedalling furiously to catch up.

Mark,

You could have written the above post for me. It mirrors my thoughts exactly.

Yes it will sell but in limited numbers. I personally think a Leica badged or made interchangeable lens μFT, which took the EVF-2 or even better a Leica badged version of the new VF-4, would have been a far better seller. If they made a range of AF μFT lenses, then a lot of folks with Panasonics and Olympodes would have bought them as well.

...wanted to show how Fuji managed to include a built-in EVF on a body roughly the same size. The Fuji 18-55 (28-90) f2.8 - 4 zoom lens shows Leica didn't need to use such a slow lens and that it wouldn't have had to be the size of a can of Fosters to be reasonable fast...

If i had to choose, i would certainly prefer the Fuji for its interchangable lenses provided its IQ is at the Leica's level, which remains to be seen on both sides obviously. Now customers interested in that kind of camera may think otherwise as you know. If i wanted to do a gift to my wife, i'm sure she would not be interested by DoF, EVF at all those trivial things. She would not like the big nose of the Fuji with zoom for sure but i'm not sure she would prefer the slighty shorter one of the so-called "mini" to be honest.

Hardly. But there is hope that the lens is not going to be that slow in the end. The latest rumours are indicating it might be a Vario-Elmarit 18-50 mm 1:2.8-4 zoom lens (28-75 mm-e).

Well i'm not a Leica dealer but the DoF of the Mini's zoom is mostly shallower than that of the Digilux 2 in a smaller package, with a larger format, a better EVF and less digital noise. Those of you who did/do like the D2 should be on the Mini's waiting lists already.

Not to rain on your (nice) Fuji parade but your f/2-2.8 lens is equivalent to f/5.6-8 DoF wise in the APS-C world.

Thats the important point!

Peter Karbe the chief of the leica optical department explained this fact in his presentations:

And in turn the whole thing s a relative concept where MORE. doesn't mean better. M8 to M9, m9 with cron to one with lux, then to nocti, then to medium format and through into large format. All relative concepts so one can't be "better" or subsequently the Fuji "worse". Ya know? ;)
