Mini M? [MERGED] AKA X-Vario

I think the leak is real, judging by the image and specs. However, I also think the leak is NOT the "Mini M". The X2 is already dubbed "Micro M", so why should a different iteration of the same camera deserve a whole new designation, let alone all this fuss?

My hope and bet is that the leaked camera will arrive alongside, or perhaps after another camera. Besides, at the leaked $2500 price point there is still a huge gap up to the M-series. There has been talk for years that leica needs to fill this gap with some sort of camera. Many thought the ME would be it, but its still too expensive to be a RX1 killer (factoring in lenses).

Have to say the numbers on this lens add up to "uninterested".......LEICA! Think about us poor folks and make us a monochrom X series with a 50mm equiv summicron welded to the front,....thank you .:D

In my opinion, it is a little beautiful camera. It is far more versatile than the X2. The sales will be higher for this new model, even considering the price. It is a taller body, so a larger screen is possible, with more resolution. The only thing that disappoints is the slow lens.

Leica has two choices for the future: a new system with AF lenses on a new mount and (maybe) a different format or a development from the current M system (mount and format). The second way implies technical difficulties, but it can be made step by step and it would make the entire M system stronger and more appealing.

But this is not the moment for that. Leica needs the manufacturing plants ready and recovering the huge investments made.

Now that would be a good seller!

This is an interesting one.

If it's fake, it says a lot about the fanbase's opinion of Leica that so many believe they could be this inept! If I was Leica watching my fans believe this crap camera to be real I'd be a bit sad, deep down.

Also, running a (my opinion on it) crappy 1980's "peeka-boo" teaser ad opens you up to fakers damaging your brand on the Internet for weeks on end. Their own fault quite frankly.

If you're going to tease it, you need to be damn well sure you can deliver come reveal day. I still hope they do.

It has been suggested elsewhere that this image from the French source (unknown provenance?) might be from a previously canned X3 prototype, released by someone who is currently laughing all the way to their Gallic socks.

FWIW, a Digilux 2 replacement would be welcomed by a lot of people. They still attract decent money in the used market for such an old digital camera. Something like this could well fit the bill.

Personally, I don't think this image is of the "Mini M".

An X2 zoom is exactly as I predicted and the leaked image looks real enough to me. I'm sure when it's out in the wild people will rave about it (including many of those who flame it now...).

Leica haven't yet started shipping the M in significant numbers, seems highly unlikely they'd be releasing another M body now. Most of this X camera is made elsewhere anyway, parts then sent to Solms so they can tighten a few screws and stick the Made in Germany label on!

I'd still love it to be a full frame fixed 35mm MIni Monochrom . It's at least different from anything else other manufacturers are doing, and with the resurgence in all things "retro" it would sell in big numbers and I think attract almost a "cult" following.

Sure - if This is the camera, it is not going to excite the denizens of internet fora and facebook groups - but then it clearly isn't supposed to.

On the other hand, it's a unique product (fixed lens APS-c Zoom). Leica don't need a mass market, the question is not whether we like it, but whether others will buy it?

As a sideline I showed the leaked document to my wife, who is a good photographer, but is about as likely to read an internet forum on photography as one on fly fishing. Her immediate response was that it looks really promising - she likes the X2, and she would like this more. As Andy said, a Digilux 2 replacement would be welcome to many.

Still owning a Digilux 2, I have to say that, for an updated model, I would prefer a smaller sensor and a very fast lens. My personal first choice would be same sensor size, same lens and body type, updated electronics. When I use the Digilux 2, most of times I use it for its DoF characteristics and for the B&W rendering.

Otherwise, due to the improvement of the mft sensors from Sony, it would be much more interesting a model with mft sensor and fixed aperture (f:2,8) zoom than something like this (I hope) fake mini-M model.

A larger sensor will give more shallow DOF.

Would this hypothetical lens give similar characteristics as far as dof is concerned to an f2 lens on a much smaller sensor?
