Many Eyes – 2010

My immediate reaction to partial numbering is tentatively negative. I'm still downloading the full #3 file and will come back on this later today after Bill's explanation.

If we go for no numbers, then provided Bill can do it (more work, sorry Bill), the thumbnail idea by Arturo seems to me a reasonable alternative. It may even be easier than fiddling around page by page adding numbers?

While I was sleeping Bill sent me another preview with numbers for you to have a look at. It is available here: bretteville.com | Many Eyes, One Camera 2011

I'll let Bill explain what he has done and how when he wakes up.

Carl

And ... good morning to all. Carl has made available, as the second downloadable book, a series of pictures that show numbers on the left-hand side -- for horizontal pix.

In each case, there is a pair of pix as they appear in the numberless version, and then the same pair with a number on the left-hand page, using the custom design that I prepared in Blurb. At the end, there is also a light-gray backgrounded version of one of Erl's pix for his approval.

If you like the way the numbers appear, I can put them on pp. 6 14 16 18 22 24 28 30 34 36 38 40 46 48 52 56 60 62 64 66 68 70 76 78 80 84 86 88 90 92 94 96 100 102 104 106 110 112 116 122 124 126 128 130 132 136 and 140.

I plan to remove the numbers from the section pages: 3 42 58 71 82 101 and 121 (showing the number 123), as they seem intrusive to me. Apparently, your editor is a finicky person.

Well, imho a non-intrusive numbering is appreciable, and the proposed solution fits well this. The Thumbnail solution is indeed quite a different approach... I have some phot books with this and I confess that don't appreciate so much... when pages are many, numbers are still the best reference.

Anyway, Bill and Carl are making an admirable job.

Ok, I withdraw my previous comments! The partial numbering is more extensive than I initially thought it would be. Go with it.

My only lingering thought on this is that numbers could be added to the centred portrait pages on either side as appropriate (e.g. p 27). But that is entirely up to Bill - he's done a fab. job and I don't really want to cause him more work.
