For me, it is all about the image and camera ergonomics and functionality.

I guess that dictates I stay with the R8 and film for my great R lenses.

The desire to go digital is, I guess, just Lust and GAS.

After a torrid love affair of almost 7 years, I sold my beloved DMR. It went into good hands. I have had Don (DAG) leitex all my best R lenses: 80 Summilux, 35 Summilx, 24 Elmarit, 50 Cron & others. Bought a Nikon D800. The most amazing files I have ever seen from a 35 mm digital camera. The DNG/files are HUGE!! Amazing details & incredible resolution. Saving up pennies for a D00E to shoot only B&W, along with more film work with my M3 & M2.

The kit has exceeded all my expectations. Now, it just needs to warm up so I can go outdoors!

Ben,

So that moment finally came. Can;t be many of us original DMR shooters around now. Glad to hear that the D800 is a good option. You must tell me more.

Best wishes,

Charlie

I haven't really used my DMR in about 3 years now. Instead, I now use Nikon, specifically the D800 for the last 2 years. Honestly, I do NOT really miss using the DMR in any way, shape or form. At first, I missed my R lenses, but they still have their original R mounts. Then, I got to use the latest Nikon G lenses: 24mm f1.4, 35mm f1.4, 85mm f1.4. You're going to love using your D800. :)

Cheers,

I love using my Nikon D800E with few of my Leitax-ed R Lenses. I have Leitax-ed only my 50/2, 90/2.8 and 180/3.4APO.

I have not violated my other R Lenses :D. Once I have my Leica R-Adapter M, I will use those on my Leica M.

This attached picture is taken with D800E with Leitax-ed 90/2.8

Many thanks Ben. That's quite a statement coming from you. I have an D800E.

I agree that the D800/E with their 36 MP are capabable of stunning performances.

Here is my question. Do you need the green focus confirmation dot for manual focus?

Or are your eyes still good enough to focus well enough through the optical viewfinder?

In the latter case you indeed have an outstanding system.

It also seems to help the green dot to shoot fast lenses wide open.

Unfortunately, my eyes are not that good anymore.

So, I have to rely on the green dot or use a Hoodman loupe in lieveview.

The latter works for me only on a tripod.

Sometimes the green dot works and sometimes it doesn't accurately enough or not at all.

That has been my experience for what I shoot.

So, I have been reluctant to leitax my R lenses as I also have APO-Extender-Rs.

Those I sometimes would like to use with an APO-R 280/4 or a Vario-R 105-280/4.2.

Those lenses on a tripod of course.

So, I now also have the Sony A7R with a similar sensor of 36 MP.

For that camera I can adapt all my Leica M, R, V and Nikkor F lenses.

No leitax modification is necessary.

For manual focus I rety on its up to 14.4x magnification through the EVF.

I have found focus peaking not accurate enough for my purposes.

So I finally have a FF camera to shoot my FF R lenses with.

As a handheld walkaround lens I have been using the Vario-R 28-90/2.8-4.5.

But over time I may try to get some of the lenses you list, in particular the 80 Summilux.

So, now for manual Nikkor F lenses like the Noct-Nikkor 58/1.2 I have two options.

Either use the Nikon D800E or the Sony A7R with a Novoflex adapter.

BTW, the latter can also set the aperture for Nikkor G lenses.

After this long preamble it should be obvious I prefer the A7R even for manual Nikkor lenses.

Of course, I prefer the D800E for AF lenses, like the image stabilized new 80-400 VR lens.

I understand using an EVF is not an option many folks will consider at this time.

Certainly an EVF has some disadavantages compared to an OVF.

However, in my particular situation the advantages of an EVF have won me over for manual focus.

Ben, good luck with your new and exciting setup.

As always, I will be looking forward to your stunning images! :)

I have several R lenses 35-70mm, 21-35mm, 28-90mm, 50mm, 90mm, 180mm, and the 80-200mm plus

Several R cameras as well as a Leicaflex SL now retired and sits handsomely in my glass cabinet.

The DMR was a terrific idea, but now days hard to find and it's future serviceing is questionable.

So for me the best option was Canon, as I don't have to change the mount, just use a good quality adapter

Will do the job.

Good luck on your choice.

Ken.

Could you be so kind as to give a hint at the adapter (EOS-R) that you prefer to use on your Canons? Thanks.

FWIW, I picked up a 19mm Elmarit-R and some adaptors last week to shoot on both M240 and A7R. I use it wide open, close focus.

The lens is just fantastic on both both bodies. Really stunning, considering this is 19mm. The images from the M240 have a bit more grip, but shooting with the A7R is so much more fluid and, therefore, more creative for me.

So I photograph more comfortably with the R lens on my A7R, but there is certainly more "darkroom" work involved in making its files comparable to the M240's. [M240 is one fantastic camera! :)]

I have three of them that I bought over some time.

Far left is the newer Novoflex version, German made....first preferance, can be left on the EOS body.

Middle is the older Novoflex version, German made.....third as it cannot be left on the body without lens attached.

Right is made by ELEFOTO and is made in Japan......second preferance, can also be left on the EOS body.

Total cost for all three around 350$ Aus.

Some more shots of the profile and size comparisons.

Canon 70D and the M240 attached to the 28-90mm lens.

Size profile, 70D, M7, and the R8.

And last, the Novoflex EOS-LER adapter attached to the EOS body.

As you can see I use both the R and M system, but because the bigger R lenses, I prefer the bigger Canon Body.

I used a Canon 1D Mark 4 with my R 28-90mm and the mirror will get stuck and I don't want to shave my lens. I assume you are not having that problem with your Canon D70. Is your Canon a full frame? I still think the DMR is giving better images than the Canon body I am currently using.

I certainly won't deny that the DMR and the Leica M will give better results then the Canon, I had original wanted to get the DMR, thats the reason I bought the R9, but the DMR unit that was loaned to me was faulty and a second unit was not available to me for some time.

The Canon 70D is not full frame, it's crop factor of 1.6 therefore my 28-90 becomes 44-144mm and the 21-35 =33-56mm.

As a primary film shooter the Canon Digital camera is adequate for my needs after all it plays second fiddle

to my Leica Film Cameras, so why bother paying big money for something that will only play partime.

Down the line I might reconsider my needs with Leica Digital, but at this time their Digital R solution is expensive compared to the Canon one.

So In the meantime I will continue to use this stuff, never gives me any trouble, it has this ability to be used in all my R and M Leicas.

In my opinion it's better then the DMR and Leica M sensors, doesn't need any electric current to

activate it, just simply AMAZING.

I haven't heard of problems with R lenses, can you be more specific?

By my own experience, there are NO problems when using the A7 with Leica R wide angle lenses - my own 'collection' covers 35..280mm, and last weekend I got the chance to play with Elmarit R 28mm and Elmarit R 19mm (ELCAN = Ernst Leitz Canada production)...

My 'standard' lenses on the A7 are the Summicron R 50mm (late = ROM version) and Summicron M 90mm (I carry them now every day, together with the A7, some spare batteries and a second camera, the superb Sony RX1 with fixed Zeiss Sonnar 2/35mm) …

M glass is more problematic - however, at least the Canadian-production Elmarit M 28mm and the classic Summilux M 35mm work for me, with the lenses showing no more short-comings than found on film on the M4P as well.

Waiting for my R 135mm ii to arrive.

For a Sony A7 with Novoflex. Very excited.

Also have a R5 coming to let me shoot some film for fun.

It's all so cheap, a real bargain.

Looking for a 180mm 3.5 apo next and possibly a R 24mm as well. Together with the Sony Zeiss 35mm and 55mm should pretty much cover my whole focal range.

  • 3 weeks later...

here's a quick summary for the statistics:

  • never had a DMR - started with Leica with the M8
  • started with R lenses with the D700, later with the D600 (for more pixels?), then changed to A7 for the ease of focusing (peaking and magnification)
  • i have the Novoflex adapters from M and R to NEX. the R lenses all have Leitax flanges.
  • so far so good - they all work very well for my purposes with the A7: 19/2.8 II, 35/2, APO 100 and 180/3.4. the 19mm needed some material removed from around the rear element to clear the Nikon mirrors.
  • for film, I have a Nikkormat FT2

greetings from Hamburg
