Requiem for the R

Now that we've all come to terms with the death of the R, and there will be no further evolution toward a LEICA DSLR using the R lens mount, and these have been discontinued, what are most of you in the R family planning to do?

1. Keep using them until your R cameras or digital backs die? Perhaps one repair after that?

2. Purchase a DSLR and adapters for R lenses?

3. Sell all your R gear?

I was looking forward to an "R" DSLR but since that never happened I purchased a new Canon 5D II and I am now starting to add R lenses to my gear. I love the results.

Wilfredo,

interesting questions...

I sold my R7 some time ago to focus on the M alone. But it was a very nice camera, the most handsome SLR I ever touched (the R8 and R9 are also very nice...).

But now where the R-System is dead, we have to take it as it ever was and ever will be:

the ultimate analogue manual focus SLR-System!

Enjoy using the R´s without any doubts,

Robert

Odd, my R camera and lenses aren't dead at all. I opted to buy a Canon digital body to use alongside my R system however, for times when I must shoot digital.

James,

Your equipment is not dead. Neither is my M2. It's the manufacturing of the R system that has come to a dead halt as you know. This marks the end of a chapter in the history of the Leica corporation. I'm sure that for those who remained loyal fans of the R camera, this was even more disappointing news. Ironically, I'm only now beginning to explore the value of R lenses and truly enjoying the results I'm getting.

I'm looking forward to the future purchase of a 35mm Summicron to use with my Canon DSLR's (5D II and Digital Rebel T1i). The existing products will live on but had the R10 materialized, I suspect my Canon DSLR's would have been a thing of the past.

I bought a Panasonic G1 and planning to buy an R adaptor. However,I've got a good Nikon coolscan V,so it's the best of both worlds for me.I'm happy: a digital that will take my R lenses and two R8 with 50 rolls of Fomapan 100.I will buy a lottery ticket,I just might be able to buy an R9!

I am going to use my DMR until I see what the Leica solution is going to be. If the solution is good I will continue on with Leica. If the solution is not to my liking I will sell all my Leica gear and return to Nikon. I am optimistic that the Leica solution is going to be one I am happy with.

I find the appeal of the Rs greatly increased by their no longer being produced. That and the low prices, of course. A day or two ago I saw an R-E body in what looked like great condition go for £94 plus postage on ebay. The R6.2 still commands high prices, and the R6 to some degree too. SL2s can be expensive too. But the other bodies are relatively cheap. I share the enthusiasm for the SL. There are some really nice lenses around at good prices as well. And if film becomes extinct or just too bothersome to use there is already the option of using the lenses on a Canon digital body or a Nikon, as Andy is doing, or on a (micro) 4/3 body if you can take the 2X factor. And I can't help feeling that sometime sooner rather than later there will be an adapter to put R lenses onto an M or M-like digital FF body that has live view or an electronic viewfinder for composition and focussing, Rgds, John

My R lenses are recovering their youth thanks to the Canon 5D.

Shot this pic yesterday in jpeg mode with the great pre-apo Summicron 90/2. Blame the photog if you don't like it as i doubt the R10 or any other dSLR would have done significantly better. 6MB file here.

My R8/DMR and other Rs + R lenses are doing very well. I will keep using them, of course, but I may pick up another system along the way. The choices are wide open now that Leica no longer make products that interest me.

Cheers,

Hi Everyone,

Perhaps I am naive, but I have not come to terms with the "death of the R" system, nor do I believe that there will be no further development by Leica of a DSLR (after all the S2 is a DSLR, isn't it?).

I have an R6 and 2 R8's. They are wonderful cameras. They work perfectly as they always have. I am a film user and happy to be one. If an R 10 were to become available, I'd be a candidate for buying one to be sure.

We were promised by Leica an R 10. We were told the design project had begun and who was the lead engineer. So that was a decision by management. They changed that decision, and if they can change it once, they can do it again.

What would it take for Leica to rethink its decision not to make an R 10? I don't know, but it seems to me that several factors might come together: weak sales of the S2; big profits in selling the M9; the potential loss of a large part of its customer base (the R users); a popular revolt on the part of us R users. : - )

I find it difficult to imagine that a. more than a few R users will buy into the S2 system, b. that the S2 system will be more than a marginal financial success, or that c. with the S2 technology already in place that designing an R 10 would be a difficult problem.

Well, we shall all see what happens. In the mean time R users of the world, unite!

Cheers!

David

Well done LCT, I like it, it's sharp the exposer is excellent.

Whats more a camera (M9) thats cost 3 times more would not have done any better.

You have made a wise choice.

If only Canon would reduce their distance on the mirror by a couple of mm on their next 5D-mk3 so those with Vario lenses like the 21-35mm and the 28-90mm can be used.

They would pick a lot of new customers like me as I would buy one immediately.

Ken.

Thank you Ken, makes my day. :) The M9 would have been less obtrusive but 2 fps is too slow for this kind of pic, i'm not HCB alas. Give me a 1:1 VF a la Epson or a .91x a la M3 and i would happily use my Elmarit, Tele-Elmarit or Elmar 90 on the M9 though. I could even buy a pre-asph Summicron if it is as good as its R counterpart. But .68x is too wide for me anyway.

I love using my R8 and numerous lenses, especially when the 135mm focal range limitation of my M6 TTL is insufficient during a shooting adventure. I bought the 90mm APO/ASPH Summicron-R lens new before Leica stopped producing R bodies and lenses and it is absolutely stunning in terms of the quality it creates in images. My R8's metering is impeccable, too.

My leica r lenses are great on my canon d40 and the 15 mm and 16mm work great on my m8 they are big but good. I have a g1 and the 2x crop on the apo 180 and apo 280 2.8 are beyond...what the heck it is just like using visoflex again! I have always preferred my large format pics because I had to slow down. Using adapted r glass in the digital age works for me

80-200/4 + DMR (still the best DSLR out there IMO)
