I never cease to be awestruck when looking through my Salgado and Adams Books.

Has anyone mentioned Bernd and Hilda Becher's B&W series: Water Towers, Blast Furnaces, and Cooling Towers?

Thank you Falstaff for adding my name to the list of 'dead' photographers. :D

I agree with your point that there are many here who I've found to be inspiring. Photographers that inspire me to go out shoot more, to learn more.

If I could only add one name, it would be Ivan Azzopardi, the jewel of Malta.

Whilst Steve McCurry and Lauren Gilpin, etc, might have produced interesting work and great collections and books, they have not had me hanging on waiting for their next image to be posted, as Ivan has. Truly inspirational, IMO.

Now this is an interesting turn of events, adding what we feel are the top level B&W photographers of our forum. Let's state one rule: the majority of the (in our forum) published work should be B&W.

I'm adding a vote for Ivan's work as well; I've been pushing him for a book.

And yes, I'll update the list shortly. I'll make a sideline for forum members, if only to prevent that people like Ivan (who I know as being down to earth) start feeling awkward next to HCB, Dalgado and other dead photographers :p

Rolo,

I'm speechless and honoured.

You too have been a great inspiration and I rank you along with the very best. A Great eye!

If I may nominate two, one from the International and one from the German Forum, they would be Jeff Plomley and Jan (telwatt). Love their work.

Thank you Rolo and Marco.

You're dead, just don't know it :).

On a more serious note, I too would strongly agree with Azzo"s name being included.

Falstaff

ps Azzo, good to see you back.

I just explored the Masters of Photography site and I saw inspirational things indeed. Names are missing over there: Capa and Cartier-Bresson, for example but I also made discoveries. I retained these as "inspirational" to me: Ansel Adams, Margaret Bourke-White, Julia Margaret Cameron, Roy DeCarava, Roger Fenton, Lewis Hine, Andre Kertesz, William Klein, Josef Koudelka, Dorothea Lange, Helen Levitt, Lisette Model, Nadar, Gordon Parks, Jacob Riis, Sebastiao Salgado, W. Eugene Smith.

Anne,

Go a little more down the post (THIS thread) and you'll find a downloadable list ... I'll be buggered if I forgot to put HCB on it, him being the master of B&W photography.

Have a look and if I forgot his name, I'll send you some lovely Dutch waffles.

I'd have to check on all other names to see if we got them 100% ... Roy DeCavara ... hmmm, ... will have a look.

Ah, no, we're obviously talking about two things. I'm looking at this specific thread (inspirational B&W photographers) and I'm sure that HCB is mentioned in the list we brought together.

So there's another list (or website) that you are referring to. Do you have an URL for that site?

Click on any of the names I put in my message and you'll be there. ;)

Kertesz Andre, Robert Doisneau, Ernst Haas and my number one is Sebastiao Salgado.

They're all great ... so thanks for the input. But Doisneau and Salgodao were already on the list (it's not a voting "who's your fav list" :D). Good contribution!
