ppkarppi Posted October 4, 2021 Share #281 Posted October 4, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks for the tip! 75 Summilux was Mandler's favorite lens if I've understood it correctly. I have it, but have never tried to use it with M5, but I will certainly try it now!
Advertisement Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 Hi ppkarppi, Take a look here I love my M5. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Hintsalae Posted October 6, 2021 Share #282 Posted October 6, 2021 This thread was one of the reasons I got mine last year and I really don't regret the purchase even though shutter exploded last winter. The build quality is impressive and these are really designed to be fixed forever. Welcome, dear visitor! a.noctilux Posted October 7, 2021 Share #283 Posted October 7, 2021 "Shutter exploded last winter" How possible ? Could you describe more, please ... ... note: beware of M5 + collapsible without a stopping band (maybe you never collapse it or I don't see the 'band' )
Hintsalae Posted October 7, 2021 Share #284 Posted October 7, 2021 (edited) My best guess is shutter curtaim tensions set to moon. Basically camera didn't have enough brake force and it hammerer this part in two. Repairing camera professionally turned out to be difficult or really expensive so we machined new part out of aluminum and It's been working well since. And I'm aware about collapsible lenses. Luckily this summicron doesn't get even close the sensor arm. Welcome, dear visitor! Yeah, as you said you bought the camera about a year ago. You don't probably know how the previous owners of the camera have abused it during the past 40+ years. Hintsalae Posted October 8, 2021 Share #286 Posted October 8, 2021 Yeah, I was guessing the same. It had a dent on top right corner and I did get it cheap. This was no way leicas fault in my opinion.
M9reno Posted October 8, 2021 Share #287 Posted October 8, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) I see a lot more black M5 cameras in this thread (and elsewhere) than chrome ones. Is chrome rarer or just less loved?

This is what happened here. it got corrected in production run. There is a specific serial number breakpoint to look for. I can’t remember what SN but a google sesrch might help. hektor Posted November 14, 2021 Share #292 Posted November 14, 2021 I remember when the M5 was new. As we all know it was bigger than the M4 so the black M5 was preferred as it didn't appear subjectively as big as the chrome version. The black chrome on subsequent cameras was not to the same standard as the M5. 1

Mine was from corrected production run if the serial numbers are tellingthe truth. And If I recall correctly the problem was shutter drum axle. The rivet which holds bottom gear assembly on place created weak point to shutter drum axle.

In one, I had the M5 modified when CLA some years ago to use the modern 1.5V to have peace of mind. Another one, I use 675 (PR44) hearing aid batteries 1.4V which have short life, so I peel off the "air hole protect" only when I put in use. These work also for Leicameter MR when I fancy to use, but in real life, I use something else, hand hold meters which can be used with 1xAA bat. Not practical, short "use by...", I have many expired 675 sets that I even don't know if I can use or not. I bought an adapter for the SR 44 Silver Oxide Battery in 2016. It reduces the voltage from 1,5V to 1,35V, and it still works fine. Hintsalae Posted February 14, 2022 Share #300 Posted February 14, 2022 I ordered somewhat illegal mercury batteries from russia last summer. I took some filing to fit properly but works perfectly now. I have some Bat43 diodes but those are still waiting to be installed. Diodes and adapters are best diy solution but I didn't like how much temperature fluctuations create inaccuracies with them.
