Hello, welcome here Naimad.

What exactly do you mean "light meter bar" ?

In the M5's VF, we must always see the bottom part, like this.

The other "view" depending on the lens mounted .

in this Xray view, we can have better idea what's inside the M5

meter galvanometer at top right

Hi A.Noctilux,

yeah I don’t se it like that, I bought the camera about 3 months ago and I remember it did have it, but now I don’t see the bar so not sure how it disappeared, and I can’t seem to find it anywhere online, so I might just have to send it to get it checked.

Hello Naimad,

I have had two M5 cameras since 1974 and have never had that problem.  Mine were periodically serviced at Wetzlar and Solms and recommend you do likewise.

Best wishes.

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if any of you have had the issue where the light meter bar doesn't show in the viewfinder? I can't see the light meter bar in there.

thanks.

Above the viewfinder is an "eyebrow" light inlet/window. If that is blocked you might not see the meter bar.

Because some of the lenses from third party manufacturers are every bit as good as Leica and quite a bit cheaper.  I would put the 35f2.8 C Biogon up against any 35 made by ANY manufacturer.  And you know David Douglas Duncan did it so those of us who shoot with third party lenses are in pretty good company.

Hello!

I felt in love with a Leica M5 and I am very close to buy one but I read this in internet:

Quote

If you ever want to use lenses that extend back into the body there will be problems with an M5. The meter cell can be damaged by the 21mm Super Angulon, and old version 28mm Elmarit. Any lenses that collapse will have to be modified with with a strip of DYMO tape to keep them from being pushed back into the camera.
The 21mm SA is one of my favorite lenses and probably the main reason I no longer own an M5.

I have a Elmarit 28mm 2.8 bought new two years ago and an Elmarit 21mm 2.8 bought second hand but like new (was a demo in a shop), Can I use both lenses without any problem with an M5?

I don't use a lot 35mm or 50mm... so if I can't use my wide angle lenses I am afraid I am not gonna buy it...

Thanks in advance,

Hello Telemetric,

M5 will accept your lenses if they are of "asph" recent models.

Of course you need external viewfinder for 28mm or 21mm.

I remember having used but to be sure, I've just put two lenses 21/28mm on the M5 no interfering with the cell :

these are

Elmarit-M 28mm asph.

and

21mm Elmarit-M asph.

as we see here, the protrudings are less than

older 21mm Super-Angulon like

this 3.4/21 SA or 4/21 SA

Leica M5 bought! :)

I will receive it in 2 days! I can't wait!

M5 is a great camera. Easiest to use M. The shutter speed dial and rewind crank are the best implemented on any M camera. Hope you get on well with it.

1.390 g of heavy chrome beauty

My personal thoughts:

The M5 is a real joy to use and absolutely beautiful! When you compare it to an M3 or M4 with a Leicameter (only that's the REAL comparison) then you realize the perfect "Bauhaus-design" of the M5...

My favorite M camera - Leica M5 with Noctilux f/1 E58 ver.1. Camera was built in 1973, sold as brand new in 1975. Lens was made in 1978. They really did build some awesome stuff in the 70s!

Very good looking M5 + Noctilux E58

I use same combo in black, for so many years,

I think that M5 is the M best body to use Noctilux 50 and Summilux 75 (even without the 75 frame lines).

...

In the past I had one plain M5 in silver as backup rarely used so sold it to a friend.

I use very short E58 screw-in hood, as seen so often that filter degrades the nice rendering of this subtle Noctilux.

As side note, I may think that if some people use neutral filter to be able to fully open up the Noctilux (in daylight), this subtle rendering would be lost.
