Advertisement Posted June 16, 2024 Posted June 16, 2024 Hi fsprow, Take a look here Did the May 2024 firmware update 2.1.1. solve your M11 freezing problems?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
sebas_ Posted June 16, 2024 Share #422 Posted June 16, 2024 Got my M11-P back from Wetzlar, new firmware installed. Have been out photographing a bit. Two files "File unreadable". And something new for me: Camera is set to Auto ISO and Auto Shutter speed. I change the aperture (testing a 50 Summilux) from f8 to f1.4, shutter speed is stuck, photos are of course overexposed. Have had this twice about 10 minutes apart. Haven't experienced that bug before. Guess it is another trip to the Leica store, not sure if I keep the M11-P, for this price that is simply not acceptable any more.

I'm flabbergasted how it could be that some owners have no or only a few issues at most and others are experiencing one issue after the other. All with the latest firmware. Could this really be related only to software ? Really amazing this ... 2
goodbokeh Posted June 16, 2024 Share #424 Posted June 16, 2024 I've been reading this thread from the beginning in hopes that the M11-P and 2.1.1 has finally turned the corner for Leica. The one thing I wonder about is if there a possible correlation between the these chronic M11 & M11-P freezing problems and the unlucky owners having charged their batteries (even once) in the body. While doing so have they unwittingly subjected their M's circuit board to a damaging current fluctuation. I always use a separate battery charger out of that concern. Just another unknowable theory I guess. I would like to treat myself to a M11-P on Father's Day, I really like the iPhone geotagging I have on my SL2 and Q2. But for now my rock solid M10-R stays.

I use my M11 daily and charge it every couple of days in body with a usb cable. I hope I didn't just jinx myself, but I've had no (or very few) issues with my M11 after a year of professional use.
sebas_ Posted June 16, 2024 Share #426 Posted June 16, 2024 I don’t think that usb-c charging has anything to do with it. As soon as you hook the camera up to a computer (tether or file-transfer) it will also charge the camera. My Leica came back from Wetzlar, so was fully inspected. My guess is that they either have a really big software mess, which they are not really capable to solve or there is some underlying hardware issue, which would need a complete redesign to fix. Strangely the M11 has the processor of the SL2 and the SL2 has been a rock solid camera for me, it has just worked. Whereas the SL3 faces its own bag of problems (when you read the forum), which uses the next generation Maestro. One positive note is that my M11-P got new WB reference values and the Daylite magenta tint is fixed now

sebas_ Posted June 17, 2024 Share #428 Posted June 17, 2024 (edited) Have tried to take some photos today, but the issue got worse. Camera is set to auto iso and auto shutter speed. When I disable live view the shutter speed gets frozen, no change in shutter speed when I point the camera into the sky or ground. No change when I change aperture from closed to open. Images are of course completely dark or blown out. Shutter is not half-pressed. When I activate live view, shutter speed is adjusted again as it should be. When I disable live view again, shutter speed is stuck on the last setting, when live view was enabled. I’m fed up now. It is simply ridiculous. This is indeed very strange….. did you try to reset the camera and to rebuild the profiles from scratch? Sometimes this helps….

But that is not the problem, as it changes the values when LV is activated, it freezes the values when LV is off. So Auto ISO does not interfere there. Just tested again. Camera switches on LV activated pointing indoor Auto Shutter speed is set, switch of LV point camera out of the window, shutters speed fixed on the indoor reading, as soon as I switch on LV shutter speed is changed. Switch off LV and point camera into the room again, shutters speed stuck on the Live View outdoor reading, as soon as I activate LV shutter speed is adjusted accordingly for indoor exposure. Or even better camera switched on with LV and lens cap on camera auto shutter is set on (despite Auto ISO) 15 sec / ISO 8000. Deactivate LV, pull off the lens hood shutter speed stays at 15sec take a shot and it use the 15sec exposure. Can press play and review the overexposed image, exit out from play, looking through the rangefinder still 15 sec is displayed. Can press the menu display it on the screen, still 15s sec. As soon as I enable LV, it jumps to ISO 2000 and 1/125sec. Edited June 17, 2024 by sebas_

I cannot help here i'm afraid. Edited June 17, 2024 by lct

This is going to fall on deaf ears because people will say "I charge my batteries in the camera without problems" So I will give this advice that nobody will listen to... until they fry their camera. So here it goes YOUR CAMERA IS NOT A CHARGER If you need to charge your batteries put them in a charger. So now go ahead and keep using your camera as a charger. 🙂 3
TeleElmar135mm Posted June 18, 2024 Share #439 Posted June 18, 2024 Some say FW 2.1.1 is the solution, other say that there are still freezings. This sounds to me that this is also a hardware problem. The question ist - and that must Leica answer - are there diffrent components in some production batches? Or an other supplier? Or any other change? The Sony R V (has a similar sensor) had in the beginning also (minor) problems with freezing. Perhaps a sensor problem? ...
lct Posted June 18, 2024 Share #440 Posted June 18, 2024 The faulty hardware theory resurfaces at each firmware update but curiously enough, freezes decrease in the same time 😉
