I just got this lens and took it for a walk this morning. It's great for daytime street photography, basically set it to f11 in bright light and use it as a point & shoot.

Hope others with this lens will post pics!

Indeed, this is a fantastic lens, for so many uses that I realise it should have had its own image thread for a long time.

Nice pics 🙂 The SEM 21/3.4 is a great lens indeed (snap below on M11 @ f/8) but not that much on some non Leica bodies. Corners tend to be soft at full aperture on my Kolari mod A7r2 and Sigma FPL. The WATE 16-18-21/4 can do better in this respect.

Just looked at the specs, and sharpness seems to peak at f5.6 which still gives a focal depth of 1.4m to infinity which is pretty much point and shoot as you say.

Supersharp at any aperture though ...

Thanks for the pics; I had been thinking about trying one but it doesn't get very close:  Smallest object field: 706 mm x 1059 mm

Do you folks use an external finder or just wing it by visualising beyond the 28mm framelines?

Which set of framelines are activated by the 21SEM?

I did not check DoF scales and calculations, but I would be a bit careful with the higher resolution sensors and printing large. I use f/8-ish the most.

On my M cameras, I do not bother with an external VF, and just extrapolate the framing from the 28mm framelines. In fact, the 28 framelines leave a little bit of margin around in the M9 VF and I found that, if I get my eye as close as possible to the VF, the whole frame is quite close to what I get with the 21mm focal length... 😉

I’m almost always between f3.4 and f5.6

Yep not a macro lens

Always, not only for correct framing, vertical lines do crazy things with a 21mm

• EVF or external OVF preferably

• 28/90mm

Thanks for your helpful tips!

@JuanLeon Yes, it's sort of the opposite of a macro lens, one of the least close lenses you can get. Perhaps that will be good for me in my evolution, having come from mostly macro (non leica) through to mostly 50mm Leica, now superwide might be a good path to explore ...

This is more or less the closer you can get with this lens 😃

I would use a lens with shorter MFD preferably but the SEM can take decent closeups with adapters. Here at about 0.3m (Sigma FPL, SEM 21/3.4, f/11).

That's a great idea @lct thank you very much. I already have an Elpro 52 type of thing that I can carry with me and screw on the front of the lens to get closer now and then ....

I've been tempted for one for a long time, but I do have the Tri-Elmar 16-18-21, so, is it worth to have two lenses that cover 21mm?

Depends on the 21 prime. Assuming it is the SEM, i would say If you need f/3.4 yes, if you need compactness yes, if you need 0.5m MFD no, if you need sharp corners on any camera no.
