sebas_ Posted June 15 Share #31 Posted June 15 I have recently bought a copy of the SEM 21 from MPB. When using it on my M11-P, the vignette is very strong. As it is 6 bit coded I tought the camera would apply a lens correction profile? The camera recognise the 21 and it is also shown in the DNG's metadata. I have made an LCC profile (have had the disk lying around from my use with technical cameras). The vignette is really strong, shot was taken with f8. Did I get a lemon from MPB (it is still in the return window) or is the vignette of the SEM 21 really that strong? Does your M's apply a vignette correctly in camera? If anybody has tried the SEM 21 in an SL version, does there the lens profile include vignette correction? I have shot a some exhibition documentation the last days, and without the LCC the images were hardly usable (mostly white walls), which show the vignette in its full glory. I understand that the vignette could be the small size, but I am a bit surprised that it is not corrected automatically in camera. Welcome, dear visitor! 01af Posted June 15 Share #32 Posted June 15 On digital sensors, lenses with a short exit pupil distance will vignette more than on film. The vignetting correction in digital Leica M cameras is supposed to reduce the apparent vignetting to the same level that would occur on film but not any further, so the user's experience with the lens will be the same on film and on digital. Don't do vignetting tests through semi-transparent disks or against white walls. Just use the lens for real-world photography.

If that is the result of the "corrected" vignette, that would be a hard pill to swallow. As mentioned the reason why I have noticed it, is real-world-exhibition-documentation. Interior with many white walls, are looking awful without running the images through LLC correction. Last time I needed that was with technical cameras with strong shift. Guess the idea to use a nice small system will not work as intended. Edited June 15 by sebas_
lct Posted June 15 Share #34 Posted June 15 Got soft corners with this lens on my Kolari mod Sony that works fine with the Super-Angulon 21/3.4 and the Biogon 21/4.5 otherwise. Same on my Sigma FPL which works fine with the WATE and i seem to recall a discussion i had on this very forum with a colleague who had the same kind of issues on a Leica SL. No such problems with the M11 though so it is a lens i use only on M11 and digital CL. JFI.

rsolti13 Posted June 15 Share #36 Posted June 15 I’m wanting to pick up a 21mm lens, don’t need fast aperture and drawn to the look of the 21 SEM. Looking into the 21 SEM and the newer Voigt 21 3.5. The Voigt looks great except for the curvature, which the SEM doesn’t look like it has. I’ve seen several examples of the sunstars from the Voigt which look fantastic, I would assume the SEM would look as good but haven’t seen many pictures showing sunstars. Anyone have examples or can discuss between the two?

01af Posted June 15 Share #38 Posted June 15 If you want a super-wide lens for Leica M cameras with only minor vignetting then try the Tri-Elmar-M 16-18-21 mm Asph.
sebas_ Posted June 15 Share #39 Posted June 15 What I don't quite understand is the blog entry: https://leica-camera.blog/2014/11/03/michael-agel-welcome-to-the-highlands-with-the-leica-super-elmar-m-21-mm-f3-4-asph/ At the bottom: Q: Why did you pack the Super-Elmar-M 21 mm f/3.4 ASPH. for your trip? A: Using the Leica M with a 21 mm lens brings me right in the middle of the scenery without any distortion or vignetting. You can use the Super-Elmar in many different ways. Its optical qualities make it also perfect for interior and architecture photography. You can even point this lens straight to the sun. Your photos will show no flare. I cannot think of another lens, where I encountered a vignette that strong, especially when stopped down to f8
