Any chance there's faulty hardware in some M11s? A bad batch of chips/components with intermittent failures? That's what it seems like to me. A bad board or a bad little trace on a card--one little component can wreak havoc. Just seems more plausible than all the possible causes people are pointing at. A small percentage of bodies sold with defects also seems to match up with what Leica is saying about the scale of the problem (not accounting for internet amplification of the issue's frequency/severity). It is enough to make me not buy an M11-P right now though. Even if only 1% of bodies has this problem, it sucks if you are the 1%.

Cheers,

-A.

Some incredible gaslighting in this thread reminds me of Monty Python's "Crunchy frog" sketch where two inspectors of the Hygiene Squad confront Mr. Milton, the defensive owner of the Whizzo Chocolate Company that produces nasty sweets. They ask him to explain the confection labelled "Crunchy Frog" and he describes it as "an entire frog that has been coated with chocolate, using only the finest baby frogs, dew picked and flown from Iraq, cleansed in finest quality spring water, lightly killed, and then sealed in a succulent Swiss quintuple smooth treble cream milk chocolate envelope and lovingly frosted with glucose". A later sketch in the same episode features Eric Idle eating a Crunchy Frog and indicating approval  .

Reminds me of when I was in Jr High school and fried grasshoppers were all the rage.

Yes I have not had any issues with my M11 since I got it at inception.  I’ve stuck with Lexar Professional 2000x 128GB SDXC UHS-II Card, Up To 300MB/s Read memory all the while on recommendation of others.  I don’t with to experiment with fate.

i do use Sandisk in my SL’s and Q2 and happy with that,

Have been using the M11 and the M11M since they both became available with absolutely no problems. Have I been lucky or just careful?!

Regards,

Edward Ward

I think I will go with lucky, as I am am very careful with my equipment and own multiple other Leica cameras and my M11 has been consistently faulty and feels like things have gotten worse not better with firmware upgrades.

I think the biggest thing is, to stick a fresh card in, reformat it in camera, and away you go. I think the majority of issues are with cards used with other camera brands then forgetting to reformat which causes a problem or can do... Just buy and enjoy. Just spend 1 weeks shooting 1200 images with it, not skipped a beat.

I can assure you I do not use my SD cards with other cameras and have tried many different SD cards following recommendations from Leica service.  I have also had issues without an AD card and only using internal memory.  So sorry but your comment/view does not hold with me.

Not that surprising given that this thread is about trouble free cameras 😉 May i ask if you tried SD Card Formatter?

New M11P owner, firmware 2.0.2, 1k shots in and no issues. Shot both internal memory and SD card (fast). Always format SD card in the camera when it goes in the camera :) Haven't used FOTOS or WIFI / bluetooth; so far only SD cards on Windows, not Mac. Currently haven't turned on image certification.

I've used both CV and Leica lenses so far (old and new). Manual metering seems just fine, I don't use auto ISO or live view very much (though I appreciate the fast access to menu items!).

So far, I haven't had a lock-up, corrupted DNG, or failure to connect to Windows explorer (and tethering in C1 also works). So far, it all just works the way I expect it to work, which is good. Now if I can only get used to the rangefinder again (actually that seems better than my M9/ M6 too, FWIW).

Fingers crossed! Going to shoot a few thousand images in the next little while, so we'll see what happens :)

Hi @Jamie Roberts, I seem to recall your color profiles for M8. Are you planning similar ones for M11 series?

Hi and thanks @lct! It's really great to have a (really great) Leica in my hands again after all these years :)

Right now, no,  I'm not planning any color profiles for the M11, since there seem to be lots of them about already, and so far at least, they look pretty good to me (once I got C1 to behave on my computers!).

But thanks for remembering the old M8 days when blacks just weren't black! It's nice to be back, but I honestly didn't think when I rejoined the forum with an M11 people would still be talking about SD card glitches, corrupted DNGs, and magenta casts! :)

In the merged M11 Freeze thread, longtime forum member John Ikarus wrote the following:

Long awaited press release from Leica acknowledging the problem:

“A small minority of M11 series owners (a handful really - not a widespread issue) have had problems with freezing, bricking and corrupt files. As a gesture of goodwill, Leica will offer an upgrade to the new M12 to those owners of affected cameras."

I'd like to believe Leica about this but it certainly seems like more than a handful according to what people are reporting on this forum.

The statement also suggests Leica are close to releasing the M12.

I highly doubt that Leica made this statement.

I received a second hand M11 Monochrom 1 week ago to try out.
After more then 250 shots where I really provoked a freeze I had no problems and I bought the camera.
Running on FW 2.0.2, a SanDisk Extreme pro 200MB/s Sd card and coded lens but no connection to Fotos.

250 frames without freezing is an excellent result for the M11!

It was a joke. I'd suggest you edit/delete the post (or mods do) as this will cause endless confusion!

Editing is not possible unless one catches it within 30 minutes.

Yes, it was a joke. I'm pretty sure no M11 owners are gullible enough to have actually believed it.

If mods want to remove it, that's fine with me.
