Unfortunately my camera started to develop freezing symptoms. It's happened to me at least four times in the last three weeks. The phenomenon occurs when viewing photos that have just been taken. Of course removing the camera battery from its place solves the problem. By the way, my default camera setting is screen completely off. Also, the bluetooth and wi-fi are also turned off.

In the meantime, and after I had no complaints during the year and a half that I had the camera in my possession - except for two times when the camera froze, and the information that was stored on the memory card went Kaput (although luckily I was able to recover the lost photos again) - I reformatted the memory card as usual, and in addition I also formatted the camera .

By the way, the memory card is the 'Kingston Canvas React Plus SDXC UHS-II U3 V60 HD/4K' and it resides in the camera, from the first day it was received.

I might add and hope that 17 years from now, my Leica M11 will be as faultless as my legendary mother Leica M8 is today.

Has it behaved since you reset the camera?

Today I worked like crazy with the M11 and everything worked fine. But I I shot with the LLL Elcan 50/2 lens, which requires manual coding. It is important to note, that all the camera freezes that I mentioned earlier, occurred when the Elmarit-M 28mm F/2.8 Asph lens was installed. Anyway, I'm attaching an appetizer - summer overture - from today's photos.

Good night.

* M11 Black, produced end of 2022

* Had a freeze today running 2.0.2

* Went to review a picture and the little red LED came on on the back of the camera and stayed that way. Camera became non-responsive to controls.

* Also noticed, I do not have the option anymore for "manual" for lens detection. The only options I have are off, and automatic. Another interesting note here is whenever I turn the camera off and then on again, it resets back to "auto" for lens detection.

* Purchased a new 128gb Sandisk Extreme Pro UHS-II card for the camera a few months ago

* Shooting full manual

* Shot DNG/JPG both to the card first and with the standard color JPG profile

I have the latest firmware 2.02 installed.  I have seen repeated freezes during the last 4 days of use with Summicron 28mm 11604 lens.  I have experienced maybe 4-5 freezes each day.  I only save L.DNG and write to both internal and SD at the same time. On each occasion, it does not happen when switching the camera on, but seems to happen if the camera is left "switched on" between and goes into sleep mode.  I have also had an issue after taking a shot and trying to review the picture too soon.   On this occasion, it told me file not readable, but did not locked the camera.  I dropped the battery and pulled the SD card, but the two prior picture files were corrupted and needed to be deleted.

I have observed the same behaviour with one lens but not any other.  in my case it is a non Leica lens with M mount, MC 24mm f2 Aporia.

however no additional crashes because of it. it may be a mechanical issue

Thank you very much for your feedback, it helps enormously!

At Leica, the team that only deals with the full functionality is making good progress in solving the problem based on this information.
The solutions still need to be tested intensively, so Leica would ask you for a little patience.

Thank you very much!

This sounds promising, especially if it indeed is a software issue and not hardware. Ir eally hope thats the case, that with some sort of magical firmware update we will all be happy with what can be an awesome camera. But if its a hardware issue, i dont think leica will be transaparent about it, given what it will imply a global recall....

My M11 with 2.0.2 hasn't had any issues yet, but I've only used it intensively for one day, during an event,  (I bought it a month ago, used, it was made in 2022). I used mine with a 28mm summaron and summicron, (coded) and a 35mm zeiss 1.4 zm and 50mm 2.0 planar both uncoded.

I just wonder if this was reported here? This was described by @Edax in the "Freeze" thread.

@Edax wrote on the 5th Aptil:

Until the new firmware is released, let’s hope they finish testing still this year, we can hold a contest "let the M11 freeze in the smallest number of pictures taken". I’ll start with a recipe which needs only two pictures taken:

  1. set storage options to “DNG +JPG only on SD”
  2. take 2 SD cards A & B, preferably the same size. Back them up, if needed, before this test
  3. insert card A, format it in camera, take 1 picture and remove card A from camera
  4. insert card B, format it in camera, and immediately remove card B from camera
  5. insert card A again, and take 1 picture
  6. switch the camera off and observe the red LED next to the cursor pad on the back. Freeze…

Afterwards, format card A, before using it again

M11P, manufactured at March 1 this year.
Latest firmware. JPG large only, single, internal memory only, no SD card.  Might or might not have LV on, couldn’t remember.
nothing special I did and it freeze during shooting. Have to pull the battery out to solve it.
so, for all 3 m11 I handled, m11, m11m, m11p all freeze.

Just to say me too. M11, M11M & P all had freezes with all firmwares. Had to get rid of them all. Incredibly frustrating but even at a lower price point reliability is a reasonable expectation.

Got my M11P just last March 23 with fw 2.0.2. Using it with a coded Summicron-m 50mm (IV). It froze on April 5, April 13 and April 14.

I experienced more or less similar issues which were already written on this thread. For whatever it's worth, I'm putting them below:

I only use internal storage, mostly on aperture mode, dng-s, CC on, dust protection on, auto review off, noise reduction off, saved two user profiles (haven't gotten any chance to shift profiles yet anyway), at times left connected to Leica FOTOS. I sometimes use LV with focus peaking on, grid lines, histogram, and the level (?).

April 5: I was using LV and pressed the play button immediately after the shot. Only the file name appeared on the screen then it bricked the camera and the only remedy was to remove and reinsert the battery. Lost the photos on that series. After it, I only changed power saving (sleep mode to 10 mins. from 3 mins.).

April 13: After charging it to full (usb charger plugged-in directly to the camera), it did not turn on the first time I switched it on. I noticed it slowed down, I pressed some buttons, then eventually bricked. I had to remove then reinsert the battery. I decided to reset the camera, but I did not format the internal storage. Restored it to the settings above.

April 14: I started being more conscious about the way I use the camera. I tried turning power saving off and maintained only one profile. I suddenly took a series of shots rapidly then immediately pressed the play button. It bricked. Removed and reinserted the battery. Lost the photos on that series. I decided to reset the camera again and formatted the internal storage. Doing away with most of the settings to try to keep it as it is with hopes of not experiencing yet another freeze.

I also noticed that the camera would feel warm to touch at times.

I hope this helps.

Back home after a 15 days trip in Yunnan (China) with the M11.

The camera froze several times in different conditions and  my goal has been to determine what is the necessary duration of battery removing before restart the camera. My conclusion is that under 60sec the camera dosen't restart. Practicaly  I only unplug the battery without removing it (what I was doing at the begining ) so I just push it back after 1 mn.

Remark in advance:

This is not a normal discussion thread, the purpose is to find individual problem cases. We will therefore moderate this thread more strictly and delete posts that do not adhere to this rule.

Topic are so-called "freezes" with Leica M11, M11-M, M11-P, which still occur after the last firmware update (V 2.0.2).

With the last firmware updates, the stability of the software has been further optimized, but apparently there are still individual freeze messages that are difficult to pinpoint. In these cases, the camera no longer responds to inputs - the battery must be removed and reinserted in order to continue taking pictures.

As the experiences of those affected are spread across different threads, we would like to bundle your feedback in this thread in order to get an overview and find data for a common cause.

To make it easier for us to get an overview, please do the following:

  • Only report if you have exactly this problem with firmware V 2.0.2.
  • If possible, please provide information on how often freezes occur and under what circumstances.
  • Please no discussions, only case reports

If you would like to discuss your experiences, please do so in this thread:

Hi,

This morning I installed Firmware 2.0.2. Shooting this afternoon I had to remove my battery several times to reset the camera. I never had this problem before.

kr,

chris

  • 3 weeks later...

Had one a few months ago on 2.0.2. I believe I took a short sequence of continuous shots on M11 and tried to hit the play button to preview quickly and it locked up.

I write to both internal and SD L DNG.

I also had a random freeze on 2.0.2 which resulted in my first and only corrupted DNG file which I was unable to open. Not exactly sure what caused it.  I always reformat my SD card in camera before my next heavy use of the camera.

IF you have any issues with your m11s please fill in the following google form, was sent to me by leica service.....

https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=5HISL2zli0-lFpQALcB-CucEHVvNlUNEv9J3m1x_t7FUNzFKRktTM0xWOEQ5S1FaQlVRQlU1UjZLOC4u

I think is important that leica knows that people are not happy with the m11 and that they need to come up with some kind of solution and a public explanation.

Commenting only in the forums wont do much.

My m11 works actually quite well compared to what i read, it rarely have freezes. Yes they do happen, but very rarely, which is still unacceptable for such a pricy camera.

Leica has just sent me another update:

They are very grateful for the input around the issue and for your patience. It's a complex problem, but most of the causes have now been identified and are being fixed.

A firmware update with a fix is coming later this month!

Regards
Andreas
