28mm on M6 for Landscapes

Hello guys,

I'm trying to understand what could be the best option for my Leica M6 for a 28mm that I would primarily use for landscape photography.

After some reading, I'm almost convinced that the Elmarit could be the right one, but even assuming that it's the right lens, I'm not sure about which version.

Could you share some advice?

In my experience, wideangle landscapes are mostly at f8 or f5.6 with some at f16 for depth of field. At these apertures, it would be hard to tell apart one lens from another and even a Summilux or Summicron would not be better. Just pick one at the right price point for you. I use a Konica 28mm in M mount ... but I do have a 24mm Elmarit for just slightly wider.

Yes, almost each 28mm for M can do and I have choices from f/2 to f/5.6 wide open.

I'd choose Summaron-M as landscape "only" lens for it's very nice rendering and compact lens.

As there is no Summarit in the 28mm domain, I'd go for the 28mm Elmarit ASPH for landscapes. For 35mm, it would be the 2.5/2.4 Summarit.

Why? For landscapes, I want an edge-to-edge sharp lens, ideally already at an f4.0 at its pinnacle (exposure times handheld ...), without aberrations as much as possible, and it should be compact because I don't want the RF blocked. Lastly, it should be as flare-resistant as it gets, as shooting back-lit landscapes is what I often choose and, as the sun is often down, the hood can't do its job.

Agreed.  And the less distortion the better.

Choose one, use it a while, then forget those that may behave "better".

Or try with more 28mm units, then be happy.

 I used both the Elmarit Asph and now the Summicron v2 for color film, but don’t like the modern look as much on b/w. For that, I prefer a more classic rendering, which I haven’t found in a reasonably fast and compact 28 yet. I like the unique rendering of my G-Rokkor screw mount lens the best so far for b/w film.
