M-A negative borders not straight

Recommended Posts

Been bothered how the frame borders from my M-A are the worst I've seen yet. Not the end of the world, but I can easily tell whether the photo was made on M-A or one of M2, vintage M6, Canon L2 and Minolta SLR.

Attached an example. See how the corners are bent inward like a pillow.

Any thoughts / experiences?

  • burchyk changed the title to M-A negative borders not straight

Thanks, do you mean you don't see what I'm about, or think this is either normal or does not bother you?

For me it is noticeable enough to tempt me to crop which I'd rather not do. Don't have this with other cameras.

Burchyk , yes I see what you mean a little curved in the four corners of the photo but in my opinion it comes from the scanner, check on the negative with a negative viewer and a magnifying glass.

Thanks! Should not be the scanner or the holder (DSLR with Valoi in my case). Other film cameras produce normal rectangular frames on the same setup.

Can you overlay a 35mm frame on your scan? I'm wondering if the 24x36mm frame fits within yours?

If you were wet printing the neg holder of most enlargers would have an exact frame size - I suspect that the Leica is giving you a larger than 24x36 frame (and not expecting that people will scan the whole neg area).

I see it.

I’ve owned (checks notes) four different MAs and have seen this issue on all of them. The first was the worst (not just wonky corners but an almost curved edge down one side of the negative) and was replaced under warranty. The rest I lived with but it always irked me. Of my four, I also never found one with even frame spacing between consecutive frames. I think posted on rff back when I first saw it and loads of people either couldn’t see it or told me I was weird for wanting to print/scan the whole frame.

My conclusion, eventually, was just that the tolerances for these things are not what they once were and to not let it bother me. If you want square, straight edged frames with even frame spacing, get an m2, 3 or 4.

I think the negatives are fine with my M-A.
The Film is not absolutely flat on the tablet.

You are using different lenses, maybe.

Wide angle symetrical can give more (wider field at film plane) as the optical center is nearer to film.

In my use, sometimes the frame's separations are more or less wide (...even null) independant of film body ( LTM Leica the "worse").
