You should claim your camera on insurance because that way you will possibly get your money. Exactly this kind of incident is what you paid your premium for. And exactly this kind of damage is emphatically not something a guaranty will cover - on anything.
Personally I would never leave my camera in the car - there are signs all over the place by the police not to do so...

Hahaha, happy you that nothing happens to your camera, some people claim the are professional with stupid remarks...... I had almost every Leica M camera with all kinds of M lenses no problem....... But now....... heroin, cocaine, fraud...... nice to experience how people are thinking, I am just upset by Leica Camera in Germany, salty water in my camera...... what a bull shit, not possible, we will see what the judge will tel us. But whatever the outcome, after 40 years all kind of Leica cameras and lenses, no more!!!

Quite rightly. We all pay for 'Warranty' as it must be built into the price of items, so we don't want this bumped up with spurious claims. It is what insurance is for as has been said.

I am also cautious about new Posters who arrive with a tale of woe!

Yes, but battery acid doesn’t travel like freakin‘ magma overnight all over a gadget, including things protruding from it, like a lens. My guess is, someone who has beef with the OP broke into his car and spilled acid on and inside the camera.

Battery acid is from car batteries.  That looks like a picture of good old fashioned alkaline battery corrosion.  Does Leica use alkaline batteries still ?

Lithium out-gasses CO2.

According to the OP, the substance came out when he or she opened the bottom plate to replace the battery. So either Leica does or someone sabotaged the camera overnight.

The ONLY chance of a claim against Leica would have been if this was caused by a laking battery. Since the OP says it wasn't then I don't see a claim getting further than the nearest lawyer rubbing their hands with glee. What else is there in a Leica M10 to create a stinking white liquid like this? I can't answer for Spain, but here, a civil claim against Leica judged on the balance of probabilities????

having seen a lot of motorbike accumulators dying, I´d guess this shown damage in the camera and lens needs the leaked volume of a 4 to 8 Ah acid accumulator of a transportable flash generator or a drone power bank. This explains as well the sulfuric acid smell.  Did you store something like that in the same bag? Such a thing can drain over night and you do not always see the hairline crack.

What kind of battery was used in the camera? Would be good, like others asked to see a picture of the batter and the battery compartment.

Electolosis seems right to me. I have seen it on boats often. That did not happen over night, but could be the result of salt water sometime before that night in the car.  Is there a possibility that the camera got splashed with salt or briney water, perhaps without you knowing about it?  A battery leak would not damage the lens.  The corrosion is in too many places. Just a random thought, could some carbonated drink in a can have been opened near the camera and the fizz got on the camera?

What a mystery, though I do feel as if we’re only getting a part of the story. The M baseplate fits tightly enough to keep most water splashing out (I’ve ’tested’ it), as well as lenses, so it would have to be opened up or totally submerged for fluid (esp thick) to come out like that. And the condition of the lens points to it not being an isolated to the camera body interior. And its not like there’s hulking amp size capacitors inside the M that can burst and leak. Very strange….

Absolutely. This is a substantial ingress which would require a significant amount of liquid for a fairly long time.

Sorry, but I am not buying the grounds for a lawsuit against Leica. The vehicle may have an unnoticed leak, perhaps? This damage looks as if it could be intentional. Perhaps someone, who is passive-aggressive, dislikes the author of the original post? (I have seen some amazingly sneaky, insidious cases of the latter.)

I am not a lawyer. I claim no “expert” status, but, was a police officer, for 33+ years, and specialized in evidentiary/forensic/crime scene photography, and physical evidence collection, during the final seven years.
