That would be the case only if Q3 uses a cheaper sensor with smaller resolution. That does not seem to be the case.

I would buy a Q3 with 40mm lens within seconds. I would add a Ricoh GRIII for the wide angle since it fits into a pocket easily. 40mm Leica q3 plus crop capabilities + Ricoh GRIII would be a sensational travel photography package. 

Currently I use a Ricoh GRIIIx which is also a 40mm camera and I loved it while traveling America last summer.

It won't happen.  It's a 28mm lens and you achieve other effective focal lengths by cropping!

That it won’t happen (even though dealers recently said – as mentioned above –, it could) is one thing. But what I cannot understand is that photographers equate cropping with taking photos with a lens with a dedicated focal length. In addition, in a Leica forum. But well, to each his own. 

Different question: Is it likely that a Q3 Monochrom will be available right from the beginning? If not, how long do you expect we have to wait for the monochrome version?

Cropping with a likely 60MP sensor and noise reduction software negates the need for other focal lengths. If you need to know what other focal lengths look like you can use the crop setting to cycle through and frame to your preferred focal length.

If past is prologue then you have about 12 months before the Q3M appears.

I had a Leica Q2 for a couple of months so I‘m basically well aware of how it works.  And still I personally see a difference between cropping and taking pictures with a lens featuring a certain focal length. But as I said, if out of a sudden cropping “negates the need for other focal lengths“ for you guys, so be it. No prob. 

 

Thanks for your estimation of how long it could take (judging from what happened in the past). So I might get a M Monochrome first even though it‘s very different camera to me.

Leica decided that cropping was the way to go with a fixed lens Q and that won't change.  I doubt it would make commercial sense to manufacture a range of Qs with different fixed focal lengths.  Of course, some dealers will always speculate, but they don't have to fund the R&D costs!

Leica offer other interchangeable lens options if you want different focal lengths.

Just buy an SL2 with a 24-90 and be done with it.

I'm still looking forward to the higher capacity battery and finger crossed it'll be backward compatible...

I hope that the battery and grip etc. are all the same size rather than Leica “doing an Apple” and changing every accessory and connection every 10 minutes. To do so is poor design.

Sure there will be people who will complain. But of course this doesn’t mean a bit that there won’t be a lot more people who will be extremely happy about a 40mm Q3.

All I want is better low light/high ISO noise/colour, and the ability to record long video (so it will need USB-C charging and no 30min limit). Without those limitations, it's a neat alternative in small venues for video and stills of theatrical/musical productions. Its big advantage at the moment (for stills) is its near-silent leaf shutter, so it has none of the banding problems associated with a silent electronic shutter on other mirrorless cameras.

I don't want an articulating screen, but would accept it if it improved heat dissipation for long video. And I'll stick with 28mm thank you very much!

My uses are specialised, but I agree. Most of my video deliverables (plays, musical performances, talking heads) have no need to be more than FHD, but 4k/6k/8k offer the opportunity to cut to zoom in post production, and the Q2(3) lens and resolution are easily capable of doing that. At present the ugly noise in low light is a bit inhibiting.

I haven't seen complains from Ricoh users about their 40mm focal length...they seem to be happy with 28 and 40mm

Yeah, so clever. Spend 8k on Q3 to crop to 50mm all the time 🙄

people that tend to shot most of their photos with a focal length over 35mm are much better served by a APSC camera if they still want to retain a compact weight / footprint, like a CL2, right?
