I personally think that including a flip screen on a Leica would be like putting a spoiler wing on a Rolls Royce. If Leica does include a flip screen I'm sure it will be designed in a way which will be seamless & unobtrusive

Or like Porsche making a suv or sedan. Ugly as hell but it sells…

I always wonder if a car discussion can transform into a camera discussion, or is it only the other way around, where all camera discussions become a comparison of cars?

For the record, Urus and Macan look great. Boxster, not so much.

😂

I am old fashioned, so to me, a Porsche is a two-sitter, a limo should be a Jaquar and the perfect 4wd is a old fashioned Land Rover.

However, with my salary and living where I live, the best option is a Lada Niva or Volvo 740. Or a Duster if one needs new.

But then, I really couldn’t care less about cars so I guess my comments are out of place…

For me, the only way I can afford Leica, is to live without a car. This has been the case for the last 34 years... (but having been a member of a non-profit car shering orgsisation for 24 years).

<snip>

This would be like saying that only rangefinders are real Leicas and that DSLR and mirrorless Leicas are abominations.

Did you see what I did here? I turned a car discussion back into a camera discussion :).

Back to the SL3. I do share the wish for a tiltable screen. A small but subtle difference the viewpoint is from waist level to eye level, and a tilt screen makes this so much easier. The same for working from a tripod.

A tilt screen adds the ability to shot at an angle (above the head or below waist level), and it's widely used handheld or on a tripod by a multitude of people. It is not a matter of adding random functionalities and clutter a la Sony, it is a hardware feature that is present on most cameras for good reasons.

The current proposed solution, using the app via live view, is not fit for purpose, and it will never be, because using the smartphone with one hand while holding the camera with the other hand is extremely clumsy and very non-Leica.

Design must also be functional, and it must solve problems, not creating new ones, that's pretty much the first lesson you learn on every UI/UX course. Otherwise you end up with a nice art object with degraded functionality, which is what a fixed screen is in 2023, a nice design for the sake of design that makes things more difficult.

Just look at Apple in the final years of Jony Ive, Macbook became so thin there was no space for ports, and people ended up using dongles, which was a much worse solution than having an extra mm on the chassis. Design for the sake of design.

PS: most, but not all, cameras have a seamless and unobtrusive screen nowadays. The Fuji XPro3 will even allow you to turn the screen the other way around and have a "M10-D" experience if you want. This is the most Leicaesque thing I've seen in years.

Nothing new here Panasonic has had it for years. I have always used my GX8 and S5 that way. BTW I like a swing-out screen better for the rare occasionsI do some Video.

If Leica got rid of the bottom plate on the M11, then they will certainly have no problem adding a tilt screen to the SL3. Let's just hope it's a 3-way tilt and not the asinine 2-way tilt that isn't useful when the camera is in the portrait orientation.

Leica may be slow, but they get there eventually.

I wonder if they will go with the fast CFexpress memory card plus 1TB of internal storage like the Hasselblad X2D 100C?

Both of those could happen.

CFexpress is clearly faster so a reasonable thing for a new flagship model to have.

And, for internal storage, Leica has already used that in the M11, so it would be nice to think they would do that with the SL3. Whether it will be as large as the X2D is a question; but even if 256 or 512mb would be nice.

Good suggestions!

Similar to Lumix S5 II, I imagine.

Not if it uses the M11 sensor. Then again, it can't use the M11 sensor and have PDAF. I also doubt that they will put a swivel screen on their smallest camera, but it's not impossible.

We'll see when it's announced. I recall either Jono Slack or David Farkas mentioning that they (both) didn't know which sensor would be used in the SL2 until release day. Some prototypes had the 47MP sensor, and some had the M10 (40MP) sensor. They found-out at the launch event.

Thanks for the background on the SL2 release... Yes, it will be very interesting to see what they deliver.

Why do you say the M11 sensor cannot have PDAF? Can you share a link to that info? Thanks!

A mirrorless camera using PDAF requires photodiodes that are physically masked to receive light from only one side of the lens, left vs right or up vs down.  Light from a left -right or up down  pixel pair  is compared and the phase difference used to determine the focus point. Since the M11 sensor, doesn't use PDAF, it doesn't have those special pixels. Not having them is a selling point for the M11 because all the pixels are used for creating the image, which means less potential artifacts that need to be compensated by software. In an SL3 with FDAF, they could use the M11 sensor design as the bases to design one with PDAF specific pixels, whether that means fabricating a whole new sensor or just making changes to the microlenses on the pixels, is a good question, but I would guess it would take more than just changing the microlenses.

Got it, thanks for the explanation!

On other forums, it was suggested that the M11 sensor is manufactured by Sony and used in their A7R series; but I think you are highlighting that there is more to the story than just who manufactures the sensor wafer. I won't pretend to understand all of it, but I do appreciate you sharing those technical details!

I’ll be curious to see how the lens holds up to 60+ mp. It is already a bit strained at 47, to my eyes. At least anywhere other than the central frame area. In any case, unless they do a longer focal length, the upgrades are not too interesting to me, although they are nice. A better VF would be a true improvement…same for the same battery and usb c charging.

Better focusing on moving subjects than the SL2.   For some reason, the SL2-S is better than the SL2 at fast focusing, even though they both have the same focusing mechanism.  I did not read through all the posts but was surprised someone did not mention this one significant flaw in the SL2.
