I recently changed my standard M11 for a P version.

I had no intention of doing so but was offered a 2 month old mint P at a keen trade. I’m thinking I’ll be keeping the 11 series for a long while as they’re approaching $20,000 NZ$ now and will probably be there by the time the 12 appears. My dealer thinks any special versions between now and the 12 will be closer to that figure too.

To put that in context, an M11-P with an Apo 35 or 50 here costs more than the new Honda Jazz car my wife recently purchased!

Last night I was sitting in the living room fooling about with the P as you do when a new toy arrives in the house.

Light wasn’t great but it wasn’t dark. Just a table light on.

Snapped a random image. The red light stayed on. I waited 30 seconds. Still on. I pressed play. The screen showed a file number in the centre but no image.

No other button responded so I popped the battery. Checked the internal memory (no card in the camera) and the image wasn’t there at all.

I’ve never seen that.

The camera was made in November 23 and when I took delivery, I noted it had old firmware without Content Authentication at all. I updated it to the latest version and the Content Authentication appeared.

This happened to me this saturday. Leica M11 with firmware 2.0.2. Lexar Professional SD: 1667x, 250MB/s, 128GB

I took a picture, hit "Play" to see the result, and it was a black screen with the filename. I hit "Fn" to go back to liveview, and that took me to a black screen with a spinner that never ended. I had to take the battery out. . Picture was gone when I checked the SD card in the computer. I store DNG + small jpeg on the SD card

Something similar happened to me when I pressed too many buttons in a too fast sequence. Obviously there are still some race condition bugs. Can you reproduce it? I have not tried.

Have experienced the filename instead of picture maybe once or twice, but its a while ago now. No, not able to reproduce. Tried to shoot from live view and another without live view, and hit "Play" immediately.

I had alot of issues with the SD card I bought with the M11 back in 2022. I returned it; Wise Advanced 64GB UHS-II. The store no longer have cards from Wise Advanced. I bought two from Lexar, so maybe I should throw the card I've used since 2022 for the unused one. Probably shot 5-6000 pictures. Maybe more. Any recommendation for SD card that works well with M11?

Delkin Black UHS II 128GB is in my M11 since I got The M11.

Had the same thing today. First freeze in a year. Was starting to think I wasn't invited to play. :)

I had no card in the camera, so it was writing to the internal memory. Lost the file. It was of a wall. So not a big loss.

Ah, yours looks to be 250mbs write. Mine is "up to 120MB/s write", which may not be sufficent for DNG + small jpeg in all exposure scenarios.

Hey! Walls have feelings too!

I bet it was a beautiful brick wall, with fine, old, slightly crumbling bricks ... it has separated two households for over 120 years, and it has some stories to tell -- neighbours chatting over the wall, rain pelting down, a skylark sheltering from a windy day ...

All this was captured by your image but is now lost to the ether ..

Perhaps one day we will find all these missing images, they simply fell through a timespace portal and now lie on a random SD card somewhere in the future ...

I'm adding Updating user profiles to my tips below (tip 7). The tips are purely empirical as usual since 2002 so don’t feel compelled to follow them. About tip 7, camera becoming unresponsive and rear screen going black have been reported under firmware 2.1.1 in case of shots in quick succession. Happened to me once too so i updated my user profiles and since then i got no more issues. About tip 4, Leica has found a fix apparently but i keep it in my list given that some LUF members are keeping an old firmware. All advices are welcome for improving the list if needed.
1. Switching camera off before mounting or removing a coded lens or adapter.
2. Switching camera off before mounting or removing the Visoflex 2.
3. Formatting memory cards with SD Card Formatter before inserting them in the camera.
4. Refraining from selecting lens detection auto for uncoded lenses.
5. Setting auto review to shutter button pressed.
6. Setting dust protection to off when using uncoded lenses.
7. Updating user profiles after 2.1.1 firmware update.

I have no freeze issues with my M11. However, it happened a lot with my M10-R and M11-p. I bought my M11 at the Leica Store Berlin, and the other two were ordered directly online, which is problematic. I eventually sold the M10-R but kept the M11-p.

The files from the M11-p were randomly corrupted no matter how I changed different SD cards (different brands and types I, II) or updated the firmware. It is confirmed that Leica's quality control is definitely on another level.

I've just received my Hasselblad 907x 100c today, bought online as well, and there are 0 issues at the moment.

That is a real bummer. Really puts a damper on my enthusiasm for getting another M11 variant.

  • 4 months later...

I just picked up an m11 which was recently back to Leica for CLA..  my first color digital M. I’ve averaged a freeze every few days so far. Mostly for me it happens when I’m first turning the camera on.

Didn’t feel like that big of a deal until I missed a photo I would have really liked to get, as I was futzing with the battery to remove it.

And today I lost at least 1 photo after a freeze. It just disappeared from the memory (I am only using internal memory). Of course it was the one photo from a few hours prior that I really nailed perfectly :( I might have lost more, I took about 15 and can’t remember exactly all of them but that one I saw on review later (and was very distinctive).

I’m on 2.1.2, I guess these issues still aren’t resolved?  Still really enjoy the camera but darn, this is pretty annoying.

People are on their way to school you how and which SD card to be used. Be ready to answer them :)

Try a factory reset + do not save the user profiles. Most of those with issues after updating to 2.1.2 have resolved them this way.
