Leica introduces a firmware update for the Leica M11: Version 1.6 now allows GPS data to be saved in EXIFs via the Leica FOTOS app, among other things. Among various other enhancements, bug fixes are also included, including a fix for the problem with freezes that sometimes occur.

» Here you can download the Leica M11 Firmware V 1.6

To use the GPS acquisition, the Leica FOTOS app must also be updated in the respective app store.

All changes at a glance:

Leica M11 Firmware V 1.6

Yeah, this GPS update is great not only that geotagging is now possible, but also that no gps tagging has the camera keep that respective EXIF field blank. Unlike before with the silly 00°00'00.00" S 00°00'00.00" E entry.

I've mentioned to Leica that there is no full frame live view feed available on the LCD and Visoflex, but rather shows a slight crop, like 98%... This means critical framing isn't possible. Seems their response is, we haven't anything about this yet. So I presume this has no priority to them. This feels like a very counter intuitive reaction for me.

Old bug: When a user profile was active, restarting camera used to keep its settings active but its icon could be replaced by that of the default profile with no apparent reason.
Fix: None when doing nothing but saving the user profile as a new name or even its old name seems to fix the issue.

I think this is due to image stabilization in liveview? So it’s cropped center

Out of interest, call me silly but it just crossed my mind, if I have missed the previous update, do I have to carry it out before this one or can I skip to do this update? 🤔

You can skip it and install this latest one.

Yes, but there is very little reason to stabilise the full image feed when not zoomed in. Zoomed in yes, but why zoomed out all the way?

I noticed that I no longer need to turn the camera on then off to charge via the USB C port. I can just plug it in with the camera off and it starts charging. This was always a pain point for me.

Don't bet on that one always being the case - mine failed to charge through the USB-C port the other night (with 1.6) for the first time in ages. I think it's improved but don't bank on it!

Maybe it was just a glitch but the firmware update was going smoothly till about 95% (isn't it always the way), then got stuck. I left it for over 1/2 hour but no progress.

I pulled the battery reformatted the card on my mac and re-inserted it. The M11 came back online, so I reformatted in camera, took the SD card out and transferred the firmware 1.6 once again.

This time it worked (I was worried the camera was bricked after pulling the battery but it was taking so long there had to be an issue), the only snag being my saved profiles on the SD card were lost (I should have downloaded them onto my mac).

Just a user report really I hope everyone update goes more smoothly

For those who already upgrade their M11 to firmware version 1.6, did you guys upgrade via Leica FOTOS app? Or did you download the firmware on to the SD card?

I use Android phones, and the Fotos app on Android doesn't show any update yet.  I'll get out an iPad and try it that way.  But doing updates on the SD card has never seemed very hard.

How do you guys back up your User Profile/settings?

From what I've experienced so far, firmware updates via the Fotos app can take 24 - 48 hours sometimes even longer to appear after initial release via the traditional SD card download process. I think it just depends on where you are in the world and when the firmware update is pushed to your local/regional Fotos app servers. Hopefully sooner than later for you.

Go into your M11 menu. Choose page 4 on top: User Profile. Then scroll down and down until next page of the menu. There choose Mange Profiles. There Export Profiles.

That will write your profiles onto your SD card

Depending how you make the Firmware Update the settings will remain anyway as you had them before or else you might be asked if you want to keep them. So to be on the safe side export them as described above. If it should happen that after firmware update your profiles are gone then import them from the card you previously exported them to. Use same menu points.

When formatting your SD card  your information on that card will be gone.
