The new M6 in the USA is $5300.  Outrageous!  Ridiculous! Stop the insanity!

And yet no-one mentions any of that when they buy a new Nikon Z9, or Sony A1, or Canon R3

Those are $5500, $6500 and $6000.

Of course these are different cameras but the vast majority of these cameras are bought by enthusiasts, not working pros.

People who want the best/nicest cameras they can buy.  Dropping $6000 on the ‘best’ digital camera seems completely reasonable, but dropping $5300 on the ‘best’ film camera is seen as an act of madness by many.  Can you buy a used M for $1500?  Of course.  You can also buy a used Sony a7 for $500.  And in a blind taste test you would not be able to tell the difference in a real photo if that was taken on an A7 or A1..

So rejoice at the affordability of Leica!  And be thankful that they are still making film cameras.

;)

I’m not advocating for digital cameras, but they do hold your hand, and what goes for experience and skill in film photography is done by the camera in your $6000 purchase. So I expect a lot of new, baffled, and disappointed new owners of the M6 who maybe hadn’t realised there would be a learning curve due to the bright and breezy ‘isn’t this great’ types of review for the M6.

Adjusting for inflation the M6 on introduction in 1984 cost a whisker under $5k. All in all I can't see how the new version could be considered to be ridiculously overpriced.

OTOH the relative prices of the top-of-the-range Nikons and Canons 'Then-and-Now'?...

Philip.

I don’t think anyone is actually complaining about the price. The only quibbling seems to be from some MP owners dissatisfied with the apparent inferiority of their camera’s “inner parts”.

That might be a stretch but realistically, I feel the MP owners might be a bit miffed at a newer camera coming on board that might be better than the inners of the MP.  I read someplace on this forum that perhaps the MP and M-4 will be continued to be manufactured as 'long as the demand is there' which means....a big push with the M6 might make obtaining a MP a bit more difficult. Personally, I don't understand what Leica is doing by keeping all three models that are essentially the same with the exception of the improved inners on the M6 and more or less minor differences and cosmetic ones at best....

Inferior parts?  No, the parts are much harder to get and therefore more rare.  Therefore the cameras are more rare and worth much more than a new, run-of-the-mill M6 ;)  Because of their rarity,  the fact that the M-A/MP are priced anywhere near the M6 means that they are a veritable bargain.

Get one now before Leica and the rest of the buying public figure this out and drive prices up to where they belong 😁

My gut tells me the MP will be phased out, and the M-A will be the traditionalist's choice.

As we know Leica will trade on it’s premium brand, limit production and limit available sales channels (e.g. my local store in Waterloo, which sells Leica stuff, have been told they can’t have the new M6 because its boutique) it is more or less guaranteed that it will be over priced. It is their business model. But as said earlier, if you want one and have the money to spend then the price is right. For me, I struggle to bridge the gap between my used M3 and M4 to the price of the new M6 but had my local store been allowed to sell the new M6 I may have become a customer.

The comparison with state of art digital cameras is cute but if you are a hybrid workflow film photographer then you are also investing in a scanner which ‘comes with’ the digital camera.

The M6 is the state of the art 35mm film camera that you can buy new.

I used to scan film with a $750 used D750, which also happens to be an excellent digi cam.

Yessss, way to exoensive.

What's new about the new M6? No innovation of an already obsolete system

The definition of obsolete is no longer produced or used.  Neither of which describes Leica.

Fun Mr. Imans, Fun! Ever heard of that? They don’t need to do this for commercial reasons. But it’s just never Okay, if they do it for commercial reasons it’s a rip-off for the customer and if there’s no commercial interest involved they are crazy 🙄. Try to enjoy life a bit in these dark times, please, for your own health. I happen to dislike the MP and the M-A in the way they feel in my hand and I think I will like the M6, but as always with Leica, details matter if you walk around in the streets all day with a camera in your hand. And Leica appears to know these likes and dislikes of their customers and acts upon it🙏🏼
