I've seen that already. Thanks to Fred for his work. Seems pretty obvious that the CV renders nicely, but it is not really sharp when shot wide open.

If time and weather permit at the weekend, I will try to compare the Voigtländer 35/1.5 to a pre-FLE 35mm Summilux ASPH and maybe the MS Apoqualia 35/1.4.

Just took delivery of my Nokton Type II in black. From what I am seeing on my M10-P, this is a wonderful lens, compact and with a smooth focus, sharp wide open, a bokeh that does intrude, and very suitable for portraits and travel. No real weaknesses that I can discern. At 35, I have used the Nokton 1.2 II, Ultron 2, Summilux pre-ASPH and briefly the Distagon.

I've shot with the CV 35/1.7 Ultron for many years. Aside from the mighty CV 35/2 APO, the f/1.7 Ultron is the closest competitor to the Zeiss 35/1.4 ZM in terms of resolution and contrast but it's it's a slower lens. The later CV 35/2 Ultron was not as great but I'm curious to see how it perform side by side to the CV 35/1.5 Nokton @ f/2. (I just received it today)

I ended up selling my 35/1.7 Ultron but it was noticeably sharper than my Leica 35/1.4 FLE, especially at mid-field, and curiously the Leica is sharper than the new 35/1.5 Nokton at f/1.4 and f/2. From that we can draw some conclusions.

From the optical design similarity, the new CV 35/1.5 Nokton shares similar characteristics to the CV 35/1.2 III when stopped down to f/1.5. Which means, not high micro-contrast and still some SA reducing resolution but smooth rendering and visible LoCA.

From Fred's samples it shows noticeably more vignetting than the Nokton 1.4 ii (or Leica 35 FLE). I also prefer less vignetting, especially for film. Definitely a tradeoff here.

Thanks, hate vignetting myself. trying to pinpoint a compact well priced 35mm lens myself for film M. Summicron alternative but 1/2 the price or less if poss. Many options out there but not many that have little vignetting, perhaps the Nokton 1.4 II is as close as I can get at the lower price point

Check out the 35 2.5 Summarit-M. Very good performance and hits your price point.

It looks like I will have to return my lens 😞

The previous table shots were all focused using Live-view.

When I used the lens outside using the rangefinder, I lost almost all of my f/1.5 and f/4 due to the lens back-focusing.

On a tripod, tests confirmed the focus was off by about 20mm @ 1m (almost one entire depth of field zone ). f/4 shifts further.

My other 35mm lenses are more centred that this.

I've not seen any back focus with my copy. focusing seems quite good and there is also no focus shift that I can discern.

Really like the funky OOF here. Maybe a hint of swirly bokeh as well? This rendering is nicely imperfect in my opinion.

@Al BrownThank you for photo examples. Can yo ushare with us additional photos, maybe some portraits at ~ F2 and some architectural shots at~F4-F8. I'm wondering how is the rendering comparing to Cron 35, because the size is similar, price is lower and those extra stops to F1.5 are additional benefit for some rare low light situations that I may encounter.

I certainly understand, after seeing your images in posts #161 and #162. You have helped me to turn my attention further away from this particular VM lens. (Not that I have anything against Voigtlander/Zeiss Cosina lenses; some of them are quite wonderfully good.)

This VM f/1.5 Nokton can certainly enable doing good work, but, it would have to compete with the Zeiss Distagon 1,4/35mm ZM, which I already have. It would be nice to have a noticeably smaller 35mm M-mount lens, for the times when compactness is desirable, but, I will keep looking at other options.
