I was one of the field testers for the 35mm Summilux f1.4 and also have the original one (without Goggles). The rendering is very very close although I prefer the glow a bit more of the old one.

Leica M10-R with reissue Steel Rim 35mm f1.4. Btw sizes are different and shade of the new one won't fit the old one (as with the 50mm f1.2 reissue).

Great samples so far Milan. You should open a new Facebook group for this lens like you did with the Thambar!

I hope to get my copy soon. For the lucky ones who already have it, please don't stop posting samples and comparisons to the v1 and v2. ;-)

Love the thread - i understand that 1m is the MFD - does anyone with the new one know if it goes slightly past 1 MFD to like .8m?  I know some of the german v2’s in my experience go a little past 1m.

Hello. I don’t have the lens so someone with it will verify but a friend who has the v3 and measured MFD said 0.9

i have a very late Germany v2 which freakishly goes to 0.75.   And another Germany (titanium) that does not !    (Titan 0.9).

(others here with slightly earlier serials than my Germany said theirs go to 0.9 so unsure why my copy focuses closer but might be something to look out for)

This is great info. I did not know about this for the v2, and would also like to know about this one, it might make my choice easier. But I guess in the end I would have to try in the store to know for sure.

I'll have to join Facebook, I didn't know there's a Thambar thread,  such a creative lens.  I attempted to replicate the Thambar look with a 50mm and filters, post processing didn't replicate it for me, likely someone with more skills could.  I used many filters more akin to the cinema world, nothing was quite as good as the Thambar.  The closest (acceptably close) is a 50 Summilux R, ver. 1 with a Softar.   Please forgive me for going so far off topic.

I was lucky to get a copy of the 35 lux SR, Leica LA received two.  I'd hazard a guess the list is short.  They don't know when the next ones will arrive.  They haven't received M6 bodies.

My attempts at Thambar approximation, with a black centre spot filter on the Heliar classic:

I have tried the 50/1.5 Heliar with the Leica Thambar center spot filter. Cool getting the donut bokeh and even more SA.

It's good to see others interested in adding aberrations.  High MP sensors with classical lenses keeps getting better.

I didn't have much luck with the Thambar center filter added to a 28 summilux, perhaps it's too modern.  I'll have to try it on older lenses.

I did have some success with aerosols sprayed on filters.  The spray pattern would influence the esthetics.  I finally gave up on this because it was difficult to duplicate a good pattern and it was a mess.

Yes, some Canada and German v2 do have a MFD below 1m.  See examples here:

I think it's more like amplifying instead of adding spherical aberration. So, in my experience it does not really work with modern well corrected aspherical lenses like the 28, 35 or 50 lux. It works great with the CV 50/1.5 Heliar since it's intentionally uncorrected for SA and coma.

I have also used the center spot on the 100/2.8 Trioplan and does create a nice effect on this lens.

Thanks, your wording is more accurate.

I find it somewhat ironic that after many years of small incremental improvements the small format is nearing perfection with Peter Karbe's amazing lenses yet the imperfect lenses are where beautiful art also lies.

Couldn't agree more, but even Peter Karbe is fan of the old exotic lenses, just he wanted to create his own signature that's what he did with the APO lenses.
I love the new lenses too but I always return to the classic rendering ones...

Hi All - my lens arrived today and overall I'm delighted with it so far. However, my apologies if this has been covered but a few quirks:

1. If you fit a protection filter (I've used the B+W 007 Titanium which goes well with the lens) you can use the screw in hood but not the OLLUX?
2. How do you actually fit the OLLUX and get it off, no simple instructions anywhere and I don't want to 'force it'. There doesn't seem to be markers on the OLLUX hood to align the hood recess points with the lens rim. I'm I right in that getting it off is just a twist and pull?
3. If you fit a 46mm filter to the lens then the included lens cap will just fall off?
4. Fitting either hood means you can't use the included lens cap?

Many thanks

I haven’t picked up my copy yet, so I can’t add any specifics.  Often times filters make caps and hoods less than perfect, I leave them in the box and add others. For this lens, I’ll add a filter and put an old Contax G lens hood onto the filter. The silver won’t match but it’ll keep it small.

I am also wondering about using filters with the two new hoods.
Can the Ollux hood attach if the lens has a filter?
Is there an external 46mm thread on the circular hood or it opens in two like the 35mm lux v2’s?

Yes it's something that isn't covered in any of the reviews and there are no simple instructions from Leica on fitting the OLLUX hood properly without damaging it for example.

Has anyone found anything or understands the ins and outs of both hoods - @jonoslack?

The original one snaps into place in the lens, so you just push it in until it locks. Then to remove it you unscrew it to the side and push it towards your body. I’m assuming this uses the same mechanism. I could also use filters and OLLUX with no problems, so I assume it’s the same for the remake. Give it a try and let us know
