Wait, $5400 US? That’s $600 cheaper than the current 35 Summilux. That’s intriguing, and I’m happy the price went down 10%—but why? Also I wonder what I’m looking at to trade up from the current gen.

Based on the private Leica FB groups and FredMiranda, new copies have been going for $3980 from reputable sellers (NIB condition) and user-condition for around $3300-3600. Hong Kong sellers have been selling the existing FLE for around $4100. This lens (new version) can be had from some Euro sellers for approximately $4800 ex-VAT with the currency conversion.

I’m pleasantly surprised by the price; $600 less than the original 35 Summilux FLE. I expected a price somewhere between $6k and $8.3k (the price of the 35 Summicron APO).  The strong dollar helps US pricing somewhat, but still much lower than expected. I guess this leaves room for future higher priced lenses with newer optical formulas (explicitly marketed as APO).

For $600 less, but it doesn't float.  It's ASPH - Aw Sh!t Phat Heavy.

No question on that.

The best hoods they have made are the metal screw on hoods like my 28 Elmarit and 50/2.4 Summarit have.  Why can't Leica just make those for every lens and be done with the experimenting??

Agree. I bought the 28mm Elmarit first and new straightaway that I'd make sure the 35mm lux I bought would be the FLE as it has the same type of screw on hood.

I'm also one of those who has just bought the Lux in the last couple of weeks. I'm not bothered though as I can use it now and it is an amazing lens. I may get the APO at some point but only after I satisfied I have all other focal lengths I like covered.

can't see any logical reason to upgrade but GAS

As an allround focal lenght, the new 35 has more to offer on travel with one or just a few lenses with this ‘macro’ possibility. So this is not just GAS if people want it. I never was very enthusiastic about the hood of the FLE either, so the built-in is also a plus.

I capture food in dark restaurants.   The close focus improvement is huge for me, and has been a pain point.

It essentially turns the M w/EVF or LCD into a manual focus 35mm Q, which is a big damn deal to many of us. Many that are downplaying the closer MFD are trying to make themselves feel better about owning the previous FLE, or they exclusively shoot film and cannot take advantage of it.

0.7m MFD has always been a limitation, not a feature. There is a whole world of photography out there that is closer than 0.7m.

Yes, when I was a Canon user I always took it for granted that my 35/1.4 lens could focus down to 0.3m.

Weird question but I actually never looked into this and realised I don't actually know this for sure, it's not really specific to this topic but since we're talking about it a little bit I started wondering: the minimum focusing distance is measured from the sensor right? or is it from the front glass of the lens?

From the sensor.

For those of us that mainly shoot street, 0.4m close focus has zero importance. Unless maybe to take a picture of our coffee cup while taking a break. ;) And the new aperture blades are really linked to the close focus distance, so no use either.

I own the pre-FLE ASPH, and really the only feature that is I find useful in this new version is the integrated hood. Had I unlimited money, yes I would upgrade, but I don't, so I'll stick to my beat-up, but still wonderful, pre FLE. (Focus shift is a non issue for me).

Nice street shots on your site! There are all sorts of cool sub-0.7m things to shoot on the street if you occasionally divert from wide scene to tight framing of people or objects you come across – doesn't have to be wine, coffee, or what-I-had-for-lunch shots :)

I have the 35 Lux Pre-ASPH v2 and was never tempted by the FLE due to the size of the lens with the hood attached. And since I shoot on the SL2-S at the moment, I have a macro adapter that lets all my lenses focus closer. But if I ever get an M11 again, the FLE II will interest me since it will be a little like having a Q3 with a 35mm lens.
