i think leica way way undersold this feature which, given the lack of the b&w photo filters i wanted, is the best of the update.

Agreed! It’s the video equivalent of adding RAW support when it was previously “JPG only”. Perhaps not quite that far because L-Log is still required, but it is definitely a huge plus. Throw in an APS-C crop to get a 42mm equivalent FOV and I would be an extremely happy camper!

With the Q3 likely around the corner I have to assume that every Q2 firmware update is probably the last one, but I can dream.

If Leica could add L-Log (and, if we're dreaming, the ability to add a LUT) this could be the perfect travel / street companion for quick but decent footage. I also noticed that when triggering video from the Fotos app (if one wanted to use their phone like an outboard screen ala Atomos) it doesn't respect the internal MOV / C4K settings. Still, very happy with this update.

With my SL2 I proceeded exactly along your instructions, but it doesn't work. The numbering starts all over with S1000001.DNG. With my Q2 it worked automatically, I'm still on the same number count as just before the 4.0 upgrade. Can it be, that the SL works differently?

Just went to check my SL2-S – exact same thing happened to mine. I had to reset the image numbering one more time. After a firmware update Leica always starts off with a folder called 100LEICA and puts the images there no matter what – then the next time you reset the numbering, it starts writing to 101LEICA, and so on. Someone else may need to reset the numbering even more times to get the images writing to the correct folder.

EDIT: this worked with some adjustments. Step 5 can't be done without an SD card in the camera, so I had to switch 5 and 4. The rest of the instructions were followed closely, but in the end the camera created a new 100Leica folder alongside the 102Leica folder that I had put in the DCIM folder, containing my last properly named DNG file, and it saved the new photo as DCIM/100Leica/L1000001.DNG anyway. Then I saw @hdmesa's other comment, and I reset image numbering twice more, and copied L1020778.DNG and its JPG to the 102Leica folder the camera had now created (and deleted 100Leica and 101Leica). Loaded the SD card into the Q2 again, shot a frame, and now the numbering has resumed at Q1020779.DNG. Succes! Thanks a lot.

You claim that you could update by using the fotos app. Are you the only one? Does that work in between? There are indeed posts in this thread coming to the conclusion that this did NOT work yet and probably in a future release. I had no chance to use Fotos app.

I don’t know if I’m the only one, and that seems like a strange question, frankly, but having no computer with me while traveling, I simply launched the Leica app, found the update there, and installed it.

You are right. It seems to work now. See as well post #106

Okay, I reset the numbering a second time. Now the SL2 produced a new folder 102LEICA with the picture number S1020001. So the numbering scheme didn't pick up where I left in the 101LEICA-Folder, i.3. at picture number S1010614. That is not ideal, I'd rather have it like my Q2 did it automatically without any voodoo, counting upwards from the last picture number. I will get over it and I won't waste any more time on that problem. Thx for you insight.

I removed the SD card put it my computer and renamed the 1010001 file to the next sequential number before the update.  Put the card back in the camera and everything went back to normal.

I would be interested to hear first impressions of the new iDR feature. The Highlight Metering seems useful only when shooting RAW (which I do 99 percent of the time), but the iDF might make shooting JPEG more feasible in some setups. First results are encouraging.

I'm testing it as I write.  Initial observations are the changes are subtle.  From the Off setting to High there is a slight increase in shadow detail.  I'd guess maybe 0.25 stops total variation.

That's very subtle! Testing here, too. In any case, I am impressed once again by the monochrome JPEGs this camera produces.

I tried but could not figure out how... perhaps they added the ability for future firmware updates to happen via Fotos? Or maybe it requires you to sign in with a Leica account?

I think you will find out you need to be signed into an account if you update via Fotos.

I would never do such an update away from my base computer.....

If anyone runs into a situation where their image file numbering got messed up*

  1. If you use a custom file name letter prefix, change the setting in camera to what you've been using ("L" is the default)
  2. Format the SD card(s) (for M11 also format the internal memory)
  3. M11 only: Change your camera settings for images to write only to the SD card (don't want the camera grabbing anything off the internal memory)
  4. Remove the SD card from the camera (card 1 for dual card cameras)
  5. Reset image numbering in camera but don't take a photo yet
  6. On your computer, find your last shot DNG file that had the right numbering and note the first three numbers after the letter
  7. Put the SD card into your computer, open it and then open the "DCIM" folder
  8. Rename the "XXXLEICA" folder so that it matches those first three numbers of your file names:
  9. If your file name is "L1010357.DNG" then your folder should be renamed to "101LEICA" and so on
  10. Copy your last used DNG into the folder you just renamed
  11. File structure should be: LEICA Q2 (card name) > DCIM > 101LEICA > L1010357.DNG
  12. Remove SD card from computer and put it in the camera
  13. Take a photo, and it should pick up where you left off with your last DNG and will name the next image "L1010358"
  14. M11 only: Change your camera setting for writing images to whatever it was before, "Internal + SD" or whatever you want

*If you have a situation where between your last correctly-numbered shot and now you've taken a bunch of photos with different names, you can batch-fix the wrong file names using a file renaming program. If you have a Mac using MacOS Monterrey, you can do this natively in the Finder, which is pretty cool. Maybe Win10 can do this now natively, I don't know.

...the numbering was messed up as I updated my Q2 Firmware. The numbering was reset for the pictures and the new pictures have placed into 100LEICA directory.

These new taken pictures are stored there. The App Leica, running on Adroid or I-Pad, is not able to find these messed up pictures to be transferred.

For me It looks that these new Firmware level is not very well tested. The bad thing is, that there is NO warning nor any other information about these changes are published. The firmware is also changing ALL your settings on your camera. If you have saved these camera setting ...and these saved settings are stored back ...these saved settings are gone. Camera is reset to factory anyway. Begin at start

The quality of these Firmware is, from my point of view, very poor, even some good functions are in.

If it resets the numbering to a folder past what you had been using, you probably would have to reset the camera and try again: 1) save your profile to SD if you don't have it saved already 2) completely reset the camera 3) reimport settings 4) reset image numbering until it writes to 101LEICA. Once it's putting an image in 101LEICA called S1010001, you can put that SD card in your computer, delete that image, empty trash, then copy over your S1010614 image to the 101LEICA folder, put the SD card back in the camera and take a photo and see if it picks up at the next number.

If that doesn't work, you may have to be ok with moving on to the S102 files.
